  • Are they true 240watt

It's a bit hard to test when there isn't anything with true 240W PD charging. SlimQ's 240W charger only goes up to 20V and not 48V as per the standard, while the Baseus 240W charger only does 140W over USB-C with 240W via the DC port.

I believe you can test it with something over 100W. @netsurfer would know more about it than me.

    • The volts don't matter. What matters is the amps. In theory any cable that can do 100w @ 20v can also do 140w and 240w since they all draw the same amount of amps (5a).

      • Volts certainly do matter. Higher voltage requires greater insulation.

In this case the maximum current would be 5a regardless, the only variable is voltage.

    • You will most likely find them having e-marking data of 240W (when you test these using a USB-C meter with ability to read PD data). However, that doesn't mean they are good / safe for 240W.

I recently bought a cheap USB4 cable that's 240W rated (PD data does indicate 240W and USB4). It can't do USB4 properly (constant drop offs). Didn't bother testing that rubbish cable for power. Got a full refund from AliExpress.

As @clear pointed out, the current challenge testing 240W is having a 240W USB-C charger. It is possible to get a USB-C meter that tests 48V, but you need to have a charger that can output 48V 5A. Either one of those items costs more than an Apple 240W USB-C cable and you need to have both to test "cost effective" USB-C cables. Therefore, for now, it is difficult for most people to properly test / validate 240W. Personally, for power, I stick with original cables. I don't want to fry my work supplied Macbook Pro.

    • It is still possible to test the USB-C cable for quality, but you need a USB-C meter that at least shows you the voltage and current (some even allow you to connect to a PC to store data / plot voltage and current graphs).

What I find is some of these cheap cables have the following issues:

      • Doesn't engage fast charging mode properly at times (stuck in 5V).
      • Charging at a slightly lower voltage and current than original or branded cables.
      • Heats up / warmer.

I find AmazonBasics USB-C USB-IF certified cables poor quality. Did buy one for $2 AUD years ago. Pity I don't have Amazon Prime, otherwise I would probably buy a pack just for fun to test whether these are any good.

    • I've got these cables from a previous sale. The 2-meter one works great with my ROG Ally, but the 3-meter one is a total pain. 😤 It keeps connecting and disconnecting, so I can't play while charging with it.

Have had the 5 pack for a while now and they're surprisingly good.

    • Yes, agree. Got from last desk and quite like these cables.

Price history says price increased by more than 50%

    5-pack was $12.72 on 16 June - link

    240W cable was $11.88 on 16 June - link

The store can opt to do a direct price drop (i.e. Lightning deal) that'll be picked up price tracking sites or they can opt to do coupons (like this deal) that can't be picked up by price tracking websites.

To put it simply - this sale is cheaper than the previous sale on June 16.
