      …when the 20GB is finished

      • +20

        typical jv…

        • +5

This is first gen ADSL speed……………considering it is very fast compared with 56k

          • @Panpanw: Correct. Even our most basic "super-slow" NBN plans deliver 12 Mbps.

4G easily delivers 40Mbps every day of the week without trying

Hence the 1.5Mbps unlimited data is certainly nothing to rave about.

Considering how quickly 5G will gobble up data this is an "Optus Scam" and hence a fools choice,

        • +3

          latency

        • 4G couldn't handle unlimited data in the large scale from my understanding

          On a side note… f##k Optus.

        • +11

JV, are you a parody account?

Its not that hard to understand. You get 20GB at 5G speeds. Once you get to 20GB, it slows to 1.5MbPs but you can still use data.

Hope I could solve this puzzle for you

            • +2

@jv: Not if 20GB is enough for your use case.

              Think JV…..think

                • +5

@jv: Not even you know what you said #mumbojumbo

Take care JV. I don't want to mush my brain conversing with you

                  • +12

@jay889344: just reading jv's comments has mushed my brain

                    • -2

@beltdrive: I am convinced JV is one of those old dudes who stands on corners in the CBD yelling at people and trying to sell those 'real issue' newspapers. LOL

                      • +1

                        @jay889344: Big Issue ?

@jay889344: Yeah, Im not sure hanging shit on homeless people was the angle you needed to succeed here, but more power to you…

@hudrob: Who said anything about homeless people you clown? Besides you that is. The guys who hand out those newspapers aren't homeless you fool

                    @jay889344: Someone needs to ban @jv soon…

          • +2

@jay889344: Getting serious on jv lol

            • -2

@solacens: Sometimes you gotta pop out and show these fools! LOL

              • @jay889344: 1.5mbps is like 3G speeds

                • +1

@BLAIL: Yes and? If you need more data at 5G speeds, get a higher plan. Its not rocket science. If not, you get 20GB with this one and if you can live with 1.5MBps after that, then great. If not, move to a higher plan that gives you more data at 5G speeds. What do people not understand about this?

                  • -4

@jay889344: 1.5mbps is like 3G speeds…have you ever tried using it at 1.5mbps…it's terrible. And Optus don't have higher MBB plans btw. You either stick with this plan or you have to go to the cheapest capped 5G Home Internet plan if eligible for it.

                    • +11

@BLAIL: Buddy no one is arguing that 1.5mbps is fast or that its 3G speeds. No one is making that argument so not sure why you're arguing that point. You're literally just arguing about something no one is saying.

The point is - for some people, 20GB of 5G data will be enough for their use cases and at $12, better than other pricing options. If you need more data at 5G speeds, get a higher plan. If Optus don't it, try Telstra, Vodafone, Amaysim, Boost, whatever you want. Its simple.

Remember back in the day when you hit your data limit, and instead of giving you unlimited data at 1.5mbps, they used to instead keep giving you the highest speed but charge $10 per extra GB? I do. People complained endlessly about it. People want the best of both worlds. No limits on speed or usage at dirt cheap prices

                      The entitlement is insane

          • @jay889344: Don't feed the local troll.

        • Coverage

      • Why are you giving contex? We don’t need context. Just pure, hard misquotes are perfectly fine

    • -2

1.5Mbps is pretty darn slow though. Its on the slower end of 4G speeds. 20GB might be enough for some but the thought of going over 20gb in a month and then having super slow mobile data access is giving me unpleasant tingling sensations

      • +4

JV’s right but we all know no matter what he’ll be negged lol

1.5 Mbps is actually sufficient for YouTube (no 4K or whatever obviously), so use up the 20GB for tasks requiring higher bandwidth and then abuse the “unlimited data” with YouTube (or whatever music apps). Of course, you should really just get this to serve as backup data should your main data fails.

        • I'm currently on this plan because for some reason even though the place I moved to has 5G for Optus, I can't get 5G Home Internet (same for Telstra/Voda)
20GB is like 3 hours of 4K netflix…so I have to pay for the $5 unlimited on top each day.

I'm now paying between $75-$150 for this plan every month. I can get FTTC NBN..waiting for FTTP upgrade to be available, but I might have to switch to FTTC 100/40 soon as I don't wanna pay up to $150 for 5G.

          • @BLAIL: The Optus mobile SIM 500GB Promo Plan for $69/mth might be another option to consider. I use it with a NetGear 4G modem and typically get 100/20.
The only other option I have is NBN Fixed Wireless which would be more expensive and slower.

            • @spockter: Good idea - I'll try that out with my 5G MU500

          • @BLAIL: On what planet is a 20G plan suitable for hours and hours of 4K streaming? I'd be surprised if the device even had a 4K display.

I have no idea why you'd choose such a low data plan thinking that would be enough for all usage.

    • +1

i swear didn't jv used to be cool? so many negs nowadays I don't get it lol

also unlimited 1.5mbps after data cap is actually so good for $12/month.

  • +4

Thats not bad for a random ipad or some IOT device you want to have a cell connection

    • +2

      IoT device and 5G, why?

      • +5

Why not? (Unless there is anything cheaper on 4G)

        • A considerable number of IoT deployments use a minimal amount of data per month, for example, between 10KB and 1MB. The telecom world is moving towards alternative network solutions—NB-IoT and LTE-M.

          https://1ot.com/resources/blog/gsm-3g-4g-lte-which-one-to-ch….

        • Another reason to avoid 5G is if the IoT device relies on battery as 5G consumes more than 4G in most places right now.

          • +1

@Indomietable: a 5G Sim will run in 4G. Those IoT devices don't usually have 5G connection in them anyway, so it'll automatically operate in 4G with this 5G sim.

      • So it works when they disable 4G in years

  • Actually can it be downgraded to 4G, or using 4G network?

    • +1

It will work with whatever device you have, 4G or 5G.

      • I have a dual sim 4g phone, will this work in my second sim slot?

I want my primary sim to make/receive calls and data to be taken from this secondary sim

        • +1

According to my experience you can.

Mine's iPhone is on esim as primary and physical sim as secondary & as data.

        • +2

Should do if your phone support Australian networks. You can receive calls from both Sims and have one Sim as your main data or backup data or disable data. May differ between phones.

          • @Bii: can you call from the sim? or only receive calls? what about sms

        • Of course that works

  • Perfect timing for Watch7 LTE.

    • +1

Apple Watch shares the same mobile number as your iPhone. I believe that’s the same for other vendors too.

There is no sim slot. Do your research before spending money.

      • Argh… true true. What's the best to do it then? This watch I think will be e-sim.

  • +2

Not a bad deal, what's the cheapest modem outright I can buy to go with this?

    • +5

The answer to that question is your old mobile phone.

  • +1

Shame no good deals on any of the tablets

  • +2

Can access unlimited data day for $5 a day with this plan too. Makes it quite enticing for a specific use case for me.

    • +1

Can also consider felix if you don't really need that high speed for frequent usage. Should be $20 for first 3 months rn.

      • Use 3-4 days per month. Uploading around 50gb of data a day. I use Felix now and they don't like that don't use the sim in a mobile. Plus the network somewhat sucks.

        • Using felix too and agreed with those statements. Vodafone network coverage is kinda bad in my suburb.

But I'm afraid 1.5Mbps can't support the requirement for online meetings.

For me also I have burst data need (video upload / game updates) and $40 is indeed more expensive now than $35 it used to be.

        • +1

Yeah they threatened to delete my account within 7 days if I don't use the sim in a mobile phone.

    • +1

What is the speed for the $5/day? People used to comment on possible cap of the speed but no one confirmed yet.

      • +1

Wanna know also. How fast is high speed?

      • Sounds like it's unlimited? A bit unclear if it depends on what type of plan you're on: https://www.optus.com.au/mobile/unlimited-data-day

        • +1

Uncapped speed so it's good depending on locations but should be pretty fast if on the spot and during 5G early stage. Unlucky my home is a dead spot to any networks. With full bars, should expect speed 100 and more.

  • +4

$144/ year actually cheaper than prepaid now

O just realized it is Data only………….

    • Same. I'd say this is a poor deal for data only.

  • Not for existing customers, unfortunately….

    • 40% off $20 Data SIM plans: Available to new and existing Consumer and Business customers who sign up to the $20/mth Optus Choice Plus Data Plan, Business Choice Plus Data or Business Choice Data plans.

      • yeah, but you need to get a new device…

        • I have the $20 20GB data plan, and just applied for the $12… no purchase required. Same service number. Just change your plan.

    • jump on livechat and ask to cancel
ive got it for $5 a month

  • +3

Can confirm it works for existing plans.

I still had their grandfathered plan so time to change it.

Plan change for 04xx xxx xxx

    SIM Plan
    Choice Plus Data Plan
    20GB dataMonth-to-month
Save 40% off for first 12 months

    $12/mth

    • I've just been chatting with Optus and they told me it's only available for existing customers if you get a new device…

      • I was on their grandfatherd plan like overpriced 5GB for $15. I was planning to cancel the plan tbh.

Just to confirm my order changing to this plan is complete. My plan for this month has a reset to 20GB.

    • Had chat, currently have 30gb plan but won't let me switch offering $20 instead. Typical optus.

      • Just get this $12 one as an additional sim on your account then when it arrives and activated cancel your $30 one (save $18 per month )

        • Yeah told that to Optus rep and thank s for helping.. not.

  • +5

I currently pay $5 a month for this plan.
Though i only use it in a 4g portable modem when i want to do other things at work and not be on company wifi.

    https://ibb.co/8xbzYx3

    • Can I ask how to get this deal? Amazing price.

    • +1

      Wow how'd you get that?

      • +5

I was originally on this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/696220
and when the 12months ended i just politely asked on Optus Chat for a further discount to stay on the existing data plan and thats the offer they provided.

        • Good old days.

          • +2

@solacens: The new offer I got has less usable data at max speed but for $5 a month and what i use it for it does me.

            • @CheapGit: Certainly attractive plan if this is $5 per month, as I can enable unlimited data day for $5 each day if needed.

        • Was that considered the compensation back then to keep the customers after the outbreak.

        • They also offered me the same deal last year at $5/month, but only for 12 months though. After that, reverts to original price $20/month. Is yours for the life of the plan? In my monthly tax invoice, it says "$15 Discount for 12 months"

          • @movi4c: Mine says $15 discount for 12 months also but I'm over that now and still $5, next payment is also showing as $5 so will see how long it lasts.

            • +1

@CheapGit: Hmm…Interesting. I guess I'll see if mine would do the same too. Thanks for letting me know CheapGit.

    • Just tried 2 chat consultants to get the same, but unfortunately no dice.
I never expected I would be successful, but you never know unless you try. :)

      • ask to cancel, $10 discount, says its not enough and ask to cancel again and they gave another $5 discount. had two year loyalty though they said. $15 discount but only for 12months

        • Yeah problem is I don't have any active services with them that I can threaten to cancel. I did offer to buy up to 3 of those services though if I got them for $5 a pop! But yeah, no dice. :)

    • +1

      Same.

I didn't use it a whole lot so after the initial 12 month price I called to cancel, they offered to keep it the original deal price, said I still wasn't interested.

They then dropped it to $5 so I kept it. Use it as a backup for when the NBN goes down or when travelling.

  • Is this now the cheapest way to get Optus Sport for those not already with an Optus plan? $12 + $9.99 (from 1 Aug) = $21.99 compared to $24.99 monthly sub.

    • +3

For monthly yes, but you could buy a yearly Optus Sport plan for $199 without being an Optus Customer. You would save $64.88 compared to $21.99 x 12 months = $263.88.

The other option is buying a cheap Optus Prepaid plan, like this one $120 after cashback, if it becomes available again, then buying the Optus Sport addon for $12 for 28 days as you need it.

Or buy a cheap prepaid starter kit, for say $10 when they go on special, or might be cheaper ones on eBay etc. Then buy the Optus Sport addon for a month or 2 for $12ea,

  • Anyone knows if I can delay activating this plan by about a month?
