The Good Guys in court over allegedly misleading store credit promotions
The ACCC has instituted proceedings in the Federal Court against The Good Guys Discount Warehouses (Australia) Pty Ltd, for allegedly making false or misleading representations about their store credit and ‘StoreCash’ promotions, and failing to provide store credit to eligible consumers, in breach of the Australian Consumer Law.
The Good Guys ran 116 promotions between July 2019 and August 2023 in which it offered consumers a store credit or StoreCash if they spent a certain amount of money on qualifying products in its online or physical stores.
The ACCC alleges that The Good Guys represented that the only requirement to receive the store credit was to make a qualifying purchase, when that was not the case because consumers were also required to opt in to receive marketing communications in order to receive a store credit.
“We allege that the conditions for consumers to receive a store credit as part of The Good Guys’ promotions were not communicated adequately in The Good Guys’ marketing materials,” ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said.
The ACCC also alleges that The Good Guys represented that store credit or StoreCash would not expire or would expire after a reasonable period, when in fact, for the majority of promotions, it expired within seven to ten days.
“We also understand that, for the majority of promotions, the store credit being offered expired within a very short period of time of ten days or less, which many consumers were unaware of.”
“We are concerned that as a result of the alleged conduct, consumers may have purchased products from The Good Guys which they might not have done otherwise.”
“Businesses should be on notice that promotional conditions must be prominently disclosed to consumers, rather than buried in hard-to-find locations, or they risk enforcement action under the Australian Consumer Law,” Ms Cass-Gottlieb said.
The ACCC has also alleged that The Good Guys failed to provide store credits to thousands of eligible consumers within the time specified in the offers, or within a reasonable time, in breach of the Australian Consumer Law.
“Even where consumers met the conditions, we allege that The Good Guys did not provide a store credit at all to many eligible consumers,” Ms Cass-Gottlieb said.
The ACCC is seeking consumer redress, penalties, declarations, compliance orders, publication orders, and costs.

Not surprised, given how many people never received their concierge credits after the first few
My mobile number on my account was changed to a random one too
The first year I messaged them and they said I didn't opt in. I was like why do I need to subscribe when I paid for this service AND I've been getting your junk mails regardless. So I opted in, they sent me my credit. Next year I emailed them again and saw I was opted off marketing again so their system is hell dodgy.
And then oddly enough in my 3rd year I was receiving $20 every 2 months so that was pretty worth it
had great time with concierge credits back in the day, always came in on time, and were easily re-sold and transferrable.
tried storecash when they first started, app kept glitching out and wouldnt even register on my phone - gave up after that.
the hoops to jump through were too annoying anyway, and couldnt be re-sold/transferred anyway.hope they get the book thrown at them
Good. (profanity) 'em, was meant to receive 4 x $20 Concierge Credits (per year) for 5 years after purchasing an extended wty on a coffee machine, they stopped after six months and no matter how many calls I made, never came through. And before anyone pings me on the extended wty, I wouldn't pay this for anything except a coffee machine — it's been repaired twice in five years (after the two year mfr wty), well worth it.
The only good thing I've had with not receiving the credits is you put in a complaint and they will then issue the missed ones as a larger voucher which gives you more options to use.
So glad to see the ACC looking into TGG store credits, it's been a ridiculous process trying to chase up store credits you met eligibility criteria for. I would love to know what % of store credits were paid out for eligible transactions. My last 1 was rejected (no reason stated), I emailed everything back, receipt, their terms and conditions and itemized each of the terms I had met. They emailed back to say it was a mistake and I was eligible, will be 2 weeks wait. 2 weeks go by and nothing, I contact them again and they simply didn't respond at all, I gave up.
Not sure what I've had the least success with, TGG credits or large cash back claims from shopback or cashrewardsYou need to send a letter to their Corporate Office

Let’s hope TGG gets more than a slap on the wrist.
when that was not the case because consumers were also required to opt in to receive marketing communications
🤣🤣🤣
ACCC must be running out of things to do…
About time.
There was an extremely common "glitch" where using a Concierge credit would take the full payment (voucher and credit card payment) without creating an actual order, and therefore TGG claimed they had no way to refund you. (unless if you were lucky)
Multiple reports of it per week (I had 5 screenshots of reviews in a brief 5 day period of looking), and they never did anything about it. I made about 10 phone calls and talked in store, and nothing ever could be done.Absolute theft. And they were aware of the issue for a very long time.
Hope this is more than a slap on the wrist.
We are concerned that as a result of the alleged conduct, consumers may have purchased products from The Good Guys which they might not have done otherwise

The ACCC has taken The Good Guys Discount Warehouses (Australia) Pty Ltd to the Federal Court, accusing them of misleading store credit and 'StoreCash' promotions. Between July 2019 and August 2023, The Good Guys ran 116 promotions offering store credits for qualifying purchases. However, the ACCC claims the promotions required consumers to opt-in for marketing communications, a condition not clearly disclosed. Additionally, store credits often expired within 7-10 days, contrary to claims of longer validity. The ACCC also alleges that The Good Guys failed to issue store credits to many eligible customers. The ACCC seeks penalties, consumer redress, and other legal orders.
Oddly enough i just received a $20 credit text out of nowhere, my 3 years of gold had already ended.
If successful they should also go them for trading under a false and misleading store name.
What's the format of their store credit?
I have received one few weeks ago, it clearly says Store Credit (not Store Cash), can be used online or instore.
Tried to use it just now, but it was not accepted and sales end today, otherwise would try it instore tomorrow.
It's a 19-alphanumeric string, with a 4-digit PIN.
Their eGift card is usually an 18-numeric number, so not sure if there was a typo.
