These look great, especially the ratchet wrench.. The only thing that worries me is there is no trademarked name for aldis 12v range, which could mean support for batteries and chargers might be shortlived.

    • +1

This is the first time that ALDI has sold 12V Tools.

Hopefully it continues like the Ferrex/Xfinity 20V Range.

      • +2

Yeah thats where the worry comes from, Aldi did do an 18v tool range a while ago, sold a whole heap of stuff then the xfinity came out making all the old equipment redundant. The previous 18v kit didn't have any trademark name or identifier beyond the Ferrex branding. Not a massive deal but still worth keeping in mind if you plan on buying extra batteries and what not for long term use.

The previous 18v kit didn't have any trademark name or identifier beyond the Ferrex branding.

Are you referring to previous ALDI "Taurus Titanium" Line; if so they are Einhell design

        • 18v and 20v are often compatible. They all use 5 lithium cells in series to get the voltage. You get various voltages ranging from 18 to 21 depending on how wanky the manufacturer wants to be.

The operating voltage range of each cell is from 3.6 to 4.2v, so multiply that by 5 and you get all the possibilities.

I vaguely remember the xfinity batteries working on the 18v tools, but check that yourself I may be wrong. But hey I use my Ozito PXC batteries with Aldi tools using an adapter I 3d printed.

        • the ones before ferrex were the red "workzone" branded ones, and they take xfinity batteries as well. i own several old workzone drills and some newer ferrex stuff.

Maybe it’s just the images but the angle on the battery near the clips looks more upswept on the toolpro?

        • +1

Plus the ToolPRO batteries are not charged via USB, but have a traditional separate battery charger

      • +1

They(toolpro) are also extremely similar to Milwaukees m12 brand, but I can unfortunately confirm that the batteries are not cross compatible, even though they can slot into both charger and tool just fine.

  • +5

I just buy what bunnings matches it for.. Keeps everything nice and clean

  • +3

Ozito had a range with a similar battery to this, as does tool pro. Will be interesting to see if the batteries are close enough to make fit

    • +3

I like to know if TOOL PRO tool Battery fit with FERREX tools too.

      can someone confirm this?

      thank you.

      • I doubt it…

      • Autobarn’s GT or Garage Tough cordless tools and batteries and chargers are compatible with Aldi Workzone/Ferrex XFinity gear. The chargers are slightly higher quality in terms of internal electronic components as well but the prices are overall much higher. So sort of a last resort really due to the price markup, unless you catch an Autobarn sale.

  • The reciprocating saw can it be used to cut branches?

    • Yes. Comes with branch clamp which is nice.

  • Problem with these deals is that they all only come with one battery. If it dies the whole lot goes in the bin

    • Id say the battery and tools are cheap from aliexpress (the trick is to find the right one lol) but yes you can't just pop down and buy a replacement battery.

    • +2

I've got one in my hand right now. It's 2 screws and you're in. 3 18650 cells. If the battery goes crook, you can get replacement cells quite cheap.

      • Where from and how to know which one to buy? cheers

        • If you have to ask, it might be beyond your current skill. Not trying to be rude, but don't try to mess around with lithium batteries. Anyway:

          https://www.tinkertechau.com.au/collections/18650-batteries

Jaycar also have them but seem $$$. If you're savvy you can salvage them from laptop batteries, cordless vacuums, etc. I have a big stash from hard rubbish piles I go rummaging through.

The batteries that come with these aldi units are only 1.3ah, which is a weak point of the deal. But upgrading to 2 or even 2.5ah if they go bad would only cost ~$20 currently.

  • Hmm, cordless dremel tool for $30 might be useful..

These seem to be the same as the Topex stuff though their spare batteries cost more than some of these kits.
I'm guessing if you looked enough you'd find a matching battery on Aliexpress though.

  • is that an impact or regular hammer?

  • +1

Cmon bunnings! $44 multitool that was conveniently $149 and out of stock last price beat round.
I’ll happily buy for $5 more, otherwise, total tools and Sydney tools have deals so i’ll hold off 5 days

    • They failed me..
      Hand tools it is……

      • So they didnt price match anything from aldi this time?? Need a multi tool asap so was hoping for something..

    • Bunnings are selling a “ozito compact multi tool 18v” for 60 bucks

  • Bought the mini grinder but am miffed that the battery doesn't like to be charged by any USB-C cable other than the 5 cent one that it came with. Not even a quality 100watt cable. Anyone with some USB tech chops know why?

May as well have come with a micro-USB cable..

    • +1

      Try a 'USB-C to A' or a '60W USB-C to USB-C'.

I'm assuming it's related to this

    • I charged mine fine with another cable but yeh, you'll likely need to use USB-A to C. PD chargers prob wont activate.

btw, I noticed in the manual it says it has 5 collets. Mine only had 4 in the storage compartment, nothing pre-installed in the tool. Was yours the same?

I'm disappointed the collar and chuck are different size to my old Ozito cabled one so cant use the flexi attachment (though rarely used it anyway) or my "keyless" chuck Have to check the size and order a new one I guess, they are pretty handy.

      • +1

Gotcha on the USB-C PD business.. makes sense, PD is a protocol and for 30 bucks this tool battery is certainly not smart.

Mine has 5 collets, 4 in the storage case and one behind the black locking collar. Sounds like QA missed it in your copy. Good luck with the Aldi visit!

        • Bugger, was going to Aldi tomorrow anyway but my closest seems didn't get any of the battery tools at all (wasn't anything there the first day and stock check says No stock info available) and the next closest where I went says no more stock..

Checking again, turns out the missing one is for the 2.3mm bits which is pretty much all of them… oh well, if I don't get my hands on one, will prob be getting the 3 jaw chuck for it anyway.

          Cheers for the reply.

  • I swapped out the ryobi chuck on the 4volt and it worked really well… getting it off afterwards was a nightmare though

  • Bought the multitool, but returned it.
The tool itself is fine, but the battery is totally inadequate. Two full charges (and 3 hour charge time) to put one cut through a skirting board.

    • Pretty sure its just the multi-tool itself. Although it functions very well, is not likely poorly suited to the small capacity battery.

I had an Ozito multitool from 10 years ago that did the same thing. it worked fine, but was very loud, and consumed battery power like heroin addict that just won Lotto. This workzone one looks very very similar. So I imagine Aldi is about to find out the multi-tool causes a lot of returns, and battery failures.

BTW, This 3-cell battery format is very common now. Some have pop out top contacts, (used by Milwaukee, Bosch), and others with recessed contact types, like this one. Many like this are used in many whitelabelled tools.

I still have the first of its type, an Ozito, before they released their bigger, popular 20v X-Finity range everyone knows about today. Ozito discontinued this very popular compact range for some reason, which was a pain as I found them the best compact tool and was able to reno a house with just one $99 set that still works today. The drill and the impact driver were bulletproof tools. However after 6 years the last of the three batteries I had died, and there was nowhere to get replacements. I tried to rebuild one but failed- after that I couldn't even find any suitable PCBS on Aliexpress (I probably blew a diode or something when soldering together the new pack).

When used in other compact tools, these batteries are actually very good. They have a good Battery Management System, unlike many non-brandname 3-cell types that don't even have temperature sensors (NTCs) to prevent hot- charging (causing cell damage).

The cheap white labelled tools have different types of chargers and various BMSs. And different 'keying' on their cases, and even differing locking tabs. But all look very similar, so beware. Many have different charging methods too, some have simple charger-packs that plug into the battery with a barrel jack (not ideal as the battery is more susceptible to water ingress), but many have a separate charger unit you put the battery in.

Recently the brand TOPEX has started selling its range locally on eBay, and they have this last type of standalone charger, and decent BMS's and are quite a comprehensive range of tools. I consider them on-par with these new Ferrex ones but do not seem identical.

I have used their batteries to make some bastard batteries for my old Ozito compact tools (only the 'keying' on the case is different, but it is close so I could make the charger accept Ozito and TOPEX batteries). Only the keying on the tools themselves (the 'skins') is different. But if you have an old, dead Ozito battery, you can just use its casing if you can free up a spare Topex (or now, Ferrex) battery.

I know as I bought a Workzone sander to find out, and pulled apart the battery. Rewarded to find a good BMS, and the same keying as the Topex batteries so are fully interchangeable. Not sure if the Topex charger will charge the Aldi battery, but it should. The USB charging (new for this battery style) is really good as it can save you when you forget a charger- and makes the tools nice much cheaper as they don't have any compliance costs (240V Aus standards) and of course, no adapter/charger either.

Great work Aldi, these compacts are excellent excepting the multitool perhaps).
