nice! shame my current subscription is active until september :(

    • +3

You can sign up with another google account if you already have a google one and then do a family share with your main acc to boost your storage.

      • Sorry, can you please explain how this works?

I have a fully family, 6 users. Mine already has this active for 100gb.

So I can sign up using anyone of the other 5? And then what?

        • +1

I have 3 google accounts all sharing seperate google one storage plans as family storage. It's cheaper for me to get individual plans than it is to go the largest one they offer. When I contacted google to see if they would do something unique for me they suggested to do a family storage share.

All you do is link your accounts as family and you can choose how much each account has access to.

          • @pennypetaz: Sorry can I just clarify

Does that mean if multiple members of a family group have a google one sub, then the storage for all plans is pooled together and accessible for everyone in the family?

            • +3

@SmiTTy: yes, that is correct, it is pooled. However, if you are part of a family plan and someone has a Google One subscription, you won't be able to add this.

If you add it on your account and then get added to a family plan, you will get it pooled.

Please note also, that if you are on a family plan you cannot get a lower Google one plan that what is already pooled eg.

I had an on going Google One plan of 200GB, I created a family plan with my sister and she has a 2TB plan. Our pooled storage was 2.2TB. When my Google One plan was due for renewal, the payment failed as I used my google balance. I then cancelled it until I had the balance updated and when I went to sign back up to my 200GB plan it would not allow my to sign up to anything lower than 2TB

Signed up 10 minutes ago but still no email yet.

    • Same for me ……

    • Any luck? Check the Spam or promotions folder.

I believe you can try a different email address to sign up for newsletter as code not locked to that email.

      • Tried with two different emails, nothing after an hour on both :(

      • Nope still no email, none in spam either. Will try again later with a different email.

    • +1

Same here … 2 different email addresses but didn't get the email.

Does anyone know how to change their OzBargain profile name? Asking for a friend…

    • Don’t tink too long or you’ll miss the deal.

    • Please tink

  • goddamn it! Just a day after I subscribed!!!!

  • Nice. Need to backup my phone which is messing up right now. Thanks!

  • so its free only for 6 months, you pay afterwards? might solve the sort term storage issue i guess

  • What happens if I cancel after 6 months? Do my 100-GB data disappear?

    • No, but you just can't backup any more photos/video

      • Also after a while they stop you sending/receiving emails

    • From memory there's a grace period

    • Google still keeps your data for a reason and another reason is to hope you would return. No harm from a giant sever.

      • I think they do delete it all after some time.

  • +3

Great if legit. But still don't wanna mess up with my 46c per month subscription.

    • +1

How did you get it this cheap!!
      TIA

    • How did you get that cheap subscription?

    • How??

    • +1

Great if legit and you can tell us how you get it for that price!

      • +3

I got mine via the turkish Apple Store in app purchase. 120 TL/year which works out to be $5.50 AUD/year or 46c/month.

        • -1

          was this recent?

          • @mmd: Last renewed December last year.

        • +1

Similar case here. Just today got charged my yearly fee of $23 for a 2TB subscription from Turkey. Been going strong for 3 years now. Had to create a new Google account in Turkey and paying using my Up! card.

  • +2

i tink they dont send the email

  • Das ist sehr gut!

  • +15

they cancelled my free 90 year premium subscription I’ll never trust them ever again

    • +1

We were all on that wreck.

  • +6

never really understood these 6-month free trial… whatcha going to do after 6 months? just move your stuff out again?? maybe if you had a current subscription which you cancelled and sign up for this trial then cancel back to paid plans?

Went down the self hosting route and never looked back - in fact i think its a big deep rabbit hole

    • +9

For of those of us who are at the limit on the free tier plan. I've now kicked the can down the road for 6 months. 🤞

      • +3

        Haha yeah but then what

        • +26

          Future Neil's problem!

    • Do you know of a self host solution for photos with a good mobile app?

      • +3

Immich. I’m highly impressed, I’ve only been on it a few months and have imported 200,000 photos and videos without issues. Happy to help if you need any help setting it up.

        • You still gotta back it up to cloud somewhere right?

        • Agree, I am sold on Immich. The install via docker is really straightforward.

However, I was thinking to run it on hold hardware (12 years old AMD CPU on 4GB RAM), but apparently it doesn't have enough grunt.

      • +5

dont forget btw; you can always get an old pixel 1 (original quality), 2 or 3 (storage saver quality) for free unlimited uploads to google photos.

set up ftp server on the phone to transfer photos to the phone wirelessly, (optional) install air mirror to remotely control the phone, or something like syncthing to auto sync

        • If that only for photos taken on those devices though?

          • +3

@TheJoker: so i thought for many many years but no. Anything that is backed up through the phone regardless whether it was taken on the device or not.

I've bought a pixel 1 years ago and have been uploading photos and videos from DJI drones and Sony cameras to pixel 1 to backup before I started my self hosting Immich. Still doing it now because well, why not.

            • @lawyerz: Same. Good for 4k video backups and 200mp photos from my S24 Ultra.

            • @lawyerz: That's great. Thanks for the tip!

        • +2

You can also get any custom ROM that supports the ability to spoof your device as an OG Pixel, pretty sure that still works.

          • @ldd-mn: never thought of that lol.

            • +1

@Leho: fantastic backup of a backup option when the pixel 1 dies.
I was thinking of this option https://get.pixelexperience.org/ but pixelify seems to be a much easier option

              • @mmd: they are different things, pixelify is a module that makes features available, pixel experience is a full custom rom.

            • @Leho: I don't believe Pixelify works for the unlimited storage anymore

            • +1

@Leho: Wow, Just wow. I liked into these hacks when google photos started using storage.. i could get it to show up as unlimited upload, but it was still using my storage. I then purchased 2 OG pixels just for this. Every month I'd make time to download all the months photos uploaded, delete it permanently and then copy it to the OG pixel to get it back in google photos. Now this mod is a game changer! No more monthly maintenance (also i was using storage saver) so this will backup at full resolution. Thanks!! Took me less than 5mins to get this working.

I have purchased 100gb a year anyway because my whatsapp uses 10gb now

        • So which account that has that unlimited Google Photos? The account used to backup photos on the phone? Or we can nominate any account?

          • @peuwayaqdq: whichever account is signed in on your pixel 1/2/3.

your quota doesn't change - it's just that anything uploaded through the pixel 1/2/3 doesn't count towards your quota

            • @lawyerz: Is that also true if we have multiple Google accounts signed in on the pixel device? Or never mind … it's only Pixel 1/2/3 … I missed that part somehow lol.

              • +2

@peuwayaqdq: only one account can be signed in to google photos at one time, but yes if you switch accounts and upload; those uploaded wont count towards the quota either.

                • @lawyerz: You can also highlight from gallery and upload to google photos and change the account

              • @peuwayaqdq: Pixel 1 only if you want to keep original format.
Pixel 2-5 will upload at storage saver quality (this should be ok for most people, i upload important RAW photos/4K Go pro onto my pixel 1)

        • set up ftp server on the phone to transfer photos to the phone wirelessly, (optional) install air mirror to remotely control the phone, or something like syncthing to auto sync

do you leave your pixel 1 turned on at all times?

          • +1

@mmd: I do - battery's all shot but its always plugged in.

            • +1

@lawyerz: You should use battery charge limit app. This will let you set max and min so your battery won't get damaged as quick. I have and android plugged in 24/7 for remote access purposes and i sent it min 40, max 60. Running over 5 years

              • @cheapass88: it's not rooted through, i understand you can really only do that if its rooted. i guess i can root it, wouldn't be my first time.

    • At a glance, it looks like the data is stored on the drive for 2 years after the sub ends before Google start deleting it. So could be useful for a 2.5 year storage of some backup files?

  • worked like a charm, thanks

  • Oh man I just renewed my subscription today lol. Nice found by the way.

  • oh no, just renewed subs a couple of days ago.

  • What’s the cheapest way to add 100 GB subscription for permanent basis?

    • Somebody up the thread recommended Turkish apple store one year purchase - 46c a month!

      • Not Android? :(

        • Probably the same, but direct Google Australia is $25/y = $2.08/m.
With the apple store you constantly pay much more for the extra "chips"

  • Thanks activated now, my option was only 200G or 2T.

  • +2

Thanks, activated for 6 months now.
"Tink GmbH was granted access to your Google Account". Any downside to this? Can I just delete the access and still have 6 months free subscription?

    • Don't think so as the subscription is managed through Tink.

    • +4

I was wondering how this promo worked. Not worth it for me to give 3rd party access to my Google account

    • After I got the 200 GB Google One subscription, I have revoked Tink access to my Google account straightaway through:
      myaccount.google.com
      Tap/click "Data and privacy"
Then scroll down to tap/click "Third party apps and services"
Tap/click "Tink then "Delete all connections that you have with Tink"
So, I have revoked Tink access to my google account/drive.

I have removed Tink in Automatic Subscription section of Paypal too.
I still can keep the 200 GB Google One subscription until the next 6 months ;-)

      • Isn't that kind of too late though? They would have pulled whatever info they could have immediately, so you're essentially just denying them 6 months worth of data collection.

        • Not sure about this, as I revoked their access straightaway after I granted them access and got the 200 GB. At least they got my email address and name. I put old home address without the number, no phone number. I don't think they have enough time to access my google drive for example.

I have opened the myaccount.google.com in a separate browser tab before accessing their website. So, I was able to revoke the access straightaway.

  • Worked perfectly for me. Thanks

  • Have you guys ever tried subscribing to G One in other countries like Nigeria using VPN? It will be way less, right? But does it work? Like Netflix

    • Using Turkey for the last 3 years, no issues on a 2TB plan.

    • +2

My concern is, if Netflix deletes/blocks my account, no worries I'll create a new one. But if Google deletes my account I lose all my photos with it 🤔

  • Well, I was unlucky and it charged me the €2.99
Seems like the promo code did not go thru! :/

  • Congratulations! Your Google One subscription has been successfully activated.

    No charge yet.

  • Are we entering an Australian address? or just a random German one?
