620

Hey everyone, GYM BOD is 40% off this week at all Coles Supermarkets in Australia.

I work for GYM BOD in Banyo, QLD so i thought i would share this offer and tell you a bit about the business!

About GYM BOD
GYM BOD is a low calorie, low sugar and high protein dessert that was made as a better option to your normal everyday ice cream. BOD stands for better option dessert.

GYM BOD started in a garage in 2018 in Toowoomba, Queensland by a young couple when they had the idea to make high protein, low calorie soft serve out of a truck for gym-goers! One thing led to another and it's now available in a tub at Coles! Cian & Courtney still own and run the business here in Banyo. All of the manufacturing is done in-house and the Owners still work out of the factory helping do all the everyday tasks!

You can read their full story here - https://gymbod.com.au/pages/gymbod-about-us

I'm telling you all this because from the surface when you see our product on the shelves you probably assume its a massive company but in reality we're just a small aussie business!!

people complain when fake meat uses the word meat but nobody cares when ice cream isn't ice cream.

    • -4

      This contains milk.

    • Yep and the ingredients to make it low sugar. Stevia is the way to go.

    • +6

I don't see anything on their packaging to suggest it is Ice Cream.

      https://ibb.co/1qVZ3Zg

      • +1

OP’s title said ice cream which you would have seen based on your comment time.

    • +1

They aren't allowed to advertise it as ice cream. The poster should know better.

    • +2

I do care. So I reported it for you.

    • +1

This product isn't identified as Ice Cream, or advertised as it.

      • OP’s title said ice cream.

    • -2

I absolutely do care, and will complain about it just as much proportionally

  • Whats the Macro ranges of these products?

    • +13

      28-70mm

      • +6

F/2.8 or did you skimp and go for F/4?

    • Who cares

    • Check out the coles links, they have it on there :)

  • +1

what ingredient that makes up 70% comes from Australia? The water?

  • +1

the Owners still work out of the factory

Is that how they really get their gym bod?

    • Gym Pod

  • +12

I developed Dad Bod from my lounge room in Melbourne

    • That's a good one.

  • Will give a try, always looking for ice cream has sweetener instead of sugar.

    • Buy a ninja creami and make your own

    • It's not ice cream, just in case you thought it was, you might get disappointed.

  • Small tub I eat it all in one go.

    • +5

can you post it on youtube

      • +8

Warning: can have a laxative effect if consumed in large amounts.

        • +33

To be fair so do you JV. 😂

        • Please record it as well if you go to toilet

        • +1

Doesn't take a large amount, trust me. Halo Top was better

          • @spendybeans: I keep hearing about this Halo Top. Gonna have to go investigate

  • +6

    Contains Maltitol :(

    • +3

      yum

    • What's that?

  • +5

Be mindful, many studies linking Erythritol (sweetener) with stomach issues. Some studies from US linking it to blood clots. Enjoy in moderation, and listen to your gut health.

      • +19

That shouldn't deter anyone unless they're afraid of dihydrogen monoxide.

Chemicals aren't bad, even if modified. More important is how they impact human anatomy and how much of a dose is required for that.

    • +4

Studies are a mixed bag when it comes to this stuff. There's lots of poor studies linking it to everything, but there's nothing I have seen that's fully peer reviewed and posted in any well respected journal. Most of the studies don't control for those taking the sweetener while also consuming large amounts of sugar.

That said, there's no real good long term studies on it. It could be problematic in high doses but it's too early to know and hard to test for. So as you said, enjoy in moderation.

      • +1

I made a very large serve of cream of rice and used "Monk Fruit with Erythritol" as a sub for sugar, and damn, my gut was not happy, and my face felt weird (cant explain it). Switched for sugar next day, no dramas. The product I used is smart marketing, as it looks like the main ingredient is Erythritol, with a pinch of monk fruit, making it sound more natural. Different bodies, different opinions and reactions, I personally now avoid it.

    • -1

yeah MSG also kills people because one prandom article told you so

  • This "ice cream" is delicious. I tried it when it first come out and was on special. Definitely give it a try.

    • What flavours would you recommend / did you try?

      • +1

Two favourites are cookies and cream, and the salted caramel

  • +1

Jam Donut was absolutely and utterly DISGUSTING!

Choc pudding was very nice, but couldn’t go anymore after the Jam Donut

    • Jam Donut was absolutely and utterly DISGUSTING!

      I liked it.

    • +1

      Plant based thats why

      • Explains the taste, I actually didn’t know, maybe should have read the fine print as I just saw Jam Donut. It tasted very chemically

  • -8

This is better, cheaper and you get more
    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/66363/conn…

    • -8

Not sure why people are down voting. Just stop eating so much you larger than average slobs. Enjoy in moderation. And be a real ozbargainer by taking the cheaper option even if it means changing your lifestyle

      • +2

128g of the linked ice cream for the same calories as 475ml of this.

whats a smarter option to curb your craving? having two teaspoons of something that wont fill you up or half a litre of ice cream that tastes 75% as good?

  • -6

If you're gonna eat "crap" or have a cheat day, just eat ice cream. This stuff and all those other high protein yogurt, fake ice cream all taste awful.

  • +1

Haven't tried myself, but there was one character on Reddit who ate "healthy" icecream a couple of times per day and lost plenty of weight, using a ninja creami and low calorie stuff. Not sure if they ate much else.

    • +1

exactly, it's literally calories in and calories out (sure, people with high metabolism and those whose digestive systems are less efficient at extracting calories have a big advantage). The biggest battle is not eating other random high-calorie foods when you inevitably get insanely hungry trying to stick with whatever plan of tiny portion meals you signed up for lol.

    • +1

You can control the ingredients with a Ninja creami, so you can make it as calorie dense (or not) as you like. I plan to get one for my bday this month. I love ice cream and it looks awesome lol

  • +2

Tried a few of these. All are kind of the same. First spoon, "mmmm". Second spoon, "eww, tastes like oats"

    • -1

Good reason not to eat too much then…

  • +6

Can't believe this has a 5-star health rating. Still, I'd rather eat five 1-star treats to get my 5 stars!

  • +5

This looks like it's been specifically formulated to make my stomach bloat to rupture - inulin, maltitol, xylitol, erythritol and lactose to boot. Hope your guts are stronger than mine Ozb.

  • +1

Oh good, I've been waiting for these to come to a slightly saner price again.

Salted Caramel one was nice, I think I tried the chocolate one last time they were half price as well and didn't mind it.

  • +1

Does anybody know where I can buy Dad Bod desserts from?

  • Gym bod is not bad, but I still prefer denada

    • denada hardly ever goes on sale though…

  • +1

Didn't see that this wasn't until tomorrow- just went to get some and it was still $10. Ffs

  • Not a fan of these, taste like protein powder

  • +3

I tried their cookies and cream some time ago and somehow it tasted nothing like cookies and cream (it was bad)

    • +1

Each to his own. I enjoyed it the cookies and cream. I always stock up when its on discount. Thanks for the heads up OP.

  • +1

I’ve tried quite a few sugar free desserts. Talked to the nutritionist as well about them and she told me to pay attention to saturated fat content as well as sugar.

One thing this gym bod thing seems to have going for it is a low fat content AND low sugar.

Denada brand for all its claims has up to 19% fat in it, 9% of which is saturated. Thats pretty freaking high. I know fat was unfairly demonised in the 90s but i still dont want to ingest whole gobs of it today.

So thanks OP. I’ll give this gym bod thing a try

    • +6

Why would you want low saturated fat in ice cream? That means it's not made of cream. I guarantee you the plant subsitute they are using is far more harmful to your health than the fat we literally evolved to eat.

Fat satiates hunger, sugar does not. That's why low fat diets always fail. Artificial sugars have the added benefit of killing your gut bacteria so you end up with leaky gut syndrome.

But I'm not your nutritionist, so I guess you should listen to them instead.

      • Yeah look fair points, thanks for the comments. I dont know the science of it very well. I need to learn more about it. I personally cook with some animal fats sometimes. So lard (pork) and tallow (beef). But otherwise i am mainly lazy and cook with stuff like canola or sunflower - i heard from somewhere that plant oils are supposedly quite bad for us?

Then theres stuff like coconut milk / coconut cream. They are a favorite ingredient of modern health foods/a good malaysian laksa noodle but the nutritionist also told me to be careful of stuff like that too.

So yeah i kinda dont really know what from what anymore.

My nutritionist was specifically trying to get my cholesterol and associated lipids down so maybe thats what she was focussed on. Not 100% sure though.

        • +2

If you are interested I can send you links to a couple of studies that explain, if you enable your private messages.

Essentially you should be cooking with extra virgin olive oil (monounsaturated fat) if you want to replicate the health outcomes of the Mediterranean diet. They don't use seed oils such as canola and sunflower oil (polyunsaturated fat) - which didn't exist on the market until industrial machinery made them cheap to produce.

The Anglo west has adopted 'modern' diets and has 10x the rate of cardiovascular disease- and still teaches the problem is saturated fat, while telling us that all non animal 'vegetable' oils are good for you.

          • @greatlamp: Yes please, i am interested to read and learn more. Have enabled dm. Ah ok that is interesting about the Mediterranean diet. Thank you for sharing your knowledge about it.

      • +1

Actually like other mammals humans evolved not to eat cream as adults. To force them to wean and allow younger siblings to breastfeed. A late mutation has allowed a percentage to return dairy to their diet but it's only around 35% of human population.

        • +1

Humans did evolve to eat meat however, the proportion of saturated fat in meat is higher than dairy.

The 35% are the decendants of humans have been consuming dairy for thousands of years. It's not late maturation, east Asian populations have more characteristics of late maturation than Europeans but cannot digest diary.

          • +1

@greatlamp: A late 'mutation'. And certainly it was later in our evolution or it would be more evenly distributed. And of course there are other late mutations. Whether we evolved to eat meat is unresolved, I've seen plenty that says we are opportunistic carnivores only.

            • @tonka: Not a mutation, an adaptation. From what I understand the ability to digest diary/lactose comes from the population of gut bacteria that exist is some people and not others.

Gut bacteria is passed from mother to child during a natural childbirth, but not during caesarian. There are also bacteria in breast milk, but there are mothers who only feed their children formula.

We also now have pasteurisation of milk by law (since factory farming is unhygienic, it's dangerous not to). So once these gut bacteria are lost, there is no mechanism for them to be reintroduced in the consumption of dairy.

              • +1

@greatlamp: Have a quick Google and see, sounds like you are thinking of something else.

                • +1

@tonka: I see what you mean. I read that gut bacteria were involved elsewhere but apparently not the primary source of the ability to digest lactose.

                  https://biology.indiana.edu/news-events/news/2019/foster-lac…

                  • @greatlamp: I do feel like there is a HUGE amount we don't understand about gut bacteria though (and it's access to neurons etc). And when we start to really figure it out it's gonna shatter our current doctrines and how we perceive ourselves.

  • +1

The sugar and fat in ice-cream makes me sick and sleepy. I'm willing to give this a go.

    • Their pretty good…

  • +1

I like the Chocolate Pudding of these the best out of all the lower call tub ice cream options. I find the Gym Bod products less icy than some other brands.

IMO these things taste surprisingly good for their calories, but still not nearly as good as “real” ice cream or gelato. If you can eat in moderation, stick to the good stuff. If you feel like indulging with portion size, these are a great option.

  • +1

Needs to come with a free roll of toilet paper.

  • +1

Might grab a tub, but I generally find a lot of these health food-style treat alternatives go way too heavy on the sweeteners and end up being kind of gross. Anyone want to suggest a flavour that might not be so sweet?

I've been eating cottage cheese cheesecakes for the last couple of months which have been awesome and helped get that six pack showing, but ice cream might make a nice change.

    • Were you serious about the cottage cheese cheesecakes? Because if you were then i might have to give them a go

      • +1

Sure am. I don't usually like cottage cheese because the texture is a bit gross, but cooking it is a total game changer!

Take 750g cottage cheese (I used Brancourts as it's less watery)
        125g low fat Greek yogurt
        4 eggs
3 scoops of protein powder (I use Bulk Nutrients vanilla Thermowhey)
        8.6g of vanilla essence
30g oat flour (adds a bit of texture, could just use oats)
30g sweetner (I use the monk fruit… you could possibly remove this if your protein powder is sweetened)

Blend the lot for a couple of minutes then pour into a cake tin.

I then put 250g of raspberries or blueberries over the top depending on what I feel like. Tried apple once and that was alright, but I'd add cinnamon if I did that again.

Bake for about 45 minutes at 150 celsius. Once the centre is at 70c, you know it's done. Cool overnight in the fridge.

Each slice is 220 calories with 20g protein, 15g carbs and 8g fats.

It has about 1/4 of the calories of some other cheesecake recipes and tastes amazing! You honestly won't be able to tell it's low cal. I can eat three pieces in a day and stay in a calorie deficit with the rest of my meals. It's surprisingly filling too. If I eat two pieces at once I feel full for hours.

My only issue is that the wife and kids keep eating it on me, so I end up having to make one every day or two…

        • Legendary! Thank you so much for the recipe. Will have to try this. Sounds amazing.

          • +1

@JOZL: All good. Let me know how you go with it.

  • +2

Had a really bad experience with these.

Bought a bunch when they were on sale last home and I was spending too much on Halo Top.

Could eat maybe 1/4 tub before I felt like I had some kind of crazy bloating and running for the facilities. And to boot, the flavours weren't very nice imo.

I think it's the ratio of sugar alcohols they use… Don't get this effect with halo top

    • +1

Yeah, I had a tub last time a deal was on and can confirm that the gas produced the next day was extreme. I won't be buying it again.

  • +1

This is false advertising. There is only less than 8% of protein, why is it marketed as high protein?

Let's check the ingredients of the vanilla flavour:

Water, Whey Protein Concentrate (Milk), Vegetable Fibre (Inulin),Polydextrose, Milk Solids, Xylitol, Erythritol, Maltitol, Choc Top (7.4 %)(Vegetable Fat, Sugar, Cocoa (12%), Whey Powder (Milk), Emulsifiers(E322 (Soy), E476), Salt, Flavour), Natural Vanilla Extract, Emulsifier (E471,E473), Maltodextrin (Maize), Stabiliser (E412, E410), Stevia.

This is the very definition of UPF. Notice that Stevia is listed at the very last. I would say that all those artificial sweeteners and maltodextrin are worse than sugar.
I can't see that this is a better option to your normal ice cream from any point of view.

  • +1

Better off with ice cream. They should consider banning items with laxative sugar like this.

  • +1

Its cheaper at NQR ($6) til 16th July but I'm not sure if theres anything NQR with it
The catalogue shows Vanilla Caramel, Choc Pudding and Strawberry

    • Does the catalogue say which NQR branches it applies to? (Also is it a paper catalogue?)

      • +1

There is a paper one but its the same as the online one, so I'm assuming its for all stores and depends on their individual stock levels
        https://nqr.com.au/pages/weekly-specials

        • Ah okay cheers

  • I'm all for supporting smaller businesses, and I purchased quite a few tubs during the last sale at Coles to assess whether it could potentially replace my usual purchase of Halo Top and Kenny's. Whilst there are plenty of positives, the texture is more 'icy' than 'creamy' (i.e., more like Kenny's than Halo Top), and whilst the sweeteners used are fine from a taste perspective they will absolutely obliterate your stomach (i.e., excessive bloating and gas), and this is coming from someone who otherwise has an iron stomach, eats like a toddler without parental oversight, and has tried nearly every degenerate protein snack pumped out by the fitness supplement industry. If you've ever had a Lenny and Larry's Complete Cookie, imagine that but turbo-charged. I can happily consume a couple of tubs of Halo Top or Kenny's and experience no ill effects, but a single tub of Gym Bod has me in a world of hurt. If you're the type of person to only consume 1/3-1/2 a tub, you'll probably be OK. Anyway, I say this not to be disparaging (and I acknowledge how difficult it is to make whey protein not taste like sweaty ass crack), but in the hope that Cian and Courtney can improve the product and appeal to a wider audience.

  • Tried Choc pudding today, surprisingly taste good, will try other flavours. Reckon this may replace twisted licks as my new low sugar treats

  • Tried Strawberry Shortcake yesterday. So here are the pros and cons: Its a nice soft texture like ice cream, after leaving the tub out to soften for 5 minutes per instructions. It tasted more icy rather than creamy, but the flavour was good, tasty. The right level of sweetness. Now for the cons. The next day has been farty city. I only ate about 3 big spoonfuls because wary of the inulin (which is a useful prebiotic fibre) and sugar alcohols that both produce gas. Its not uncomfortable in my tummy but i wouldnt recommend eating the whole tub in one sitting because it might cause too much bloating and possibly pain. Overall i would def buy again. And eat in moderation

  • +1

Are you taking out the crushed bugs (carmine) out of the strawberry anytime soon?
