    Thanks! Bought. 😀

Never going to advocate spending more than $300 on a smartwatch in their current form, but if you're already up in this price range surely you're getting the $600-$650 Ultra deals.

If you're not wedded to the Apple ecosystem, the specs on the upcoming Galaxy Watch Ultra are impressive. Announcement is tomorrow night.

Horses for courses. For those who value technology/features, then yes, Ultra is a no-brainer, but there is a good amount of people out there that prefers the SS for its look and function as dress watch. And because they're not chasing the latest feature, this can be a good deal for them.

      • +10

look and function as a dress watch

        please……

        • -3

Apple users are increasingly weird, yup.

      • +2

Ultra is just too bulky and heavy not for everyone, I am not going to carry it around for those ultra features I would never use. My ss s7 is doing good for me but I would buy S10 Aluminium later this year to save a bit (I don’t use the cellular anyway and aluminium is even lighter)

        • +3

Agree. I much prefer the SS finish over the Ultra.

    • Is the Ultra even readily available at that price? I haven't seen it that cheap other than the JB deal.

      • I got it for around $592 refurbished with EBay’s EOFY sale and EBay Plus. Honestly love it

    • the specs on the upcoming Galaxy Watch Ultra are impressive. Announcement is tomorrow night.

yup I was excited about the Galaxy watch Ultra up until I heard the specs.

TLDR: no rotating bezel, no rotating crown (just 3 buttons). no extra large screen size, same processor as Galaxy watch 7.

3000 nits of brightness is the same as the 7 and that’s just ridiculous 1000 nits is more than enough.

seems like the Watch 7 in a tougher thicker case WITH NO ROTATING CROWN and slightly larger battery for double the price.
it’s got a “virtual” rotating crown instead which uses the edge of the touchscreen and doesn’t work too well apparently.

galaxy watch 7 is just better value. seems like they just stuck with cost saving and put a watch 7 in a different case.

      • The ambient light on a clear day is upwards of 7000 nits, so while 3000 nits peak isn't great for white, I assume the goal is to conquer the reflections of the glass with respect to more tolerable colours.

But yes there is eventually a point where the number gets too high for a given ambient light level, and the pupil contracts to adjust. In a completely dark room, that number is 1000 nits.

As for the SoC on the Watch 7, that does come as a small surprise, so I assume there's a lot of new sensor tech in the Ultra, and perhaps superior cooling.

        • my current daily Mi band 8 Pro (with auto brightness) at 600 nits max is just under what I would consider easily visible under direct sunlight on a clear day.

I think 1000 nits would be as clear as it gets, before it’s like setting the watch to max brightness indoors where it appears too bright and it sears your eyes a bit.

yeah I think the Galaxy Ultra has some extra software features. but double the price? it’s a no from me.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: 800-1600 nits would have you covered for SDR without question, if it was permanent and consistent across the entire visible spectrum. These peak values tend to be a bit more specific than that, including in picture modes that you'd never use.

We're definitely in the era where people need to be aware that peak brightness figures marketed might not reflect their actual experience overall, or ever.

But keep in mind this is technology used across many devices, and on smartwatches/smartbands it will be used for HDR function in the future.

            • +1

@jasswolf: yeah just from my experience.

sorry if I’m sounding a little outraged or too concerned. it’s another 2am can’t sleep reading up on smartwatch’s morning for me.

trust me look into any 1000+ nits display in normal conditions it will sear your eyes.

              • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: All good! Another factor is that - subject to any newer methods to push the TCON and panel - higher peak brightness means better battery life for a given brightness level, usually.

Eventually these watches will be able to give outdoor HDR viewing and have week long battery life.

                • @jasswolf: you just have to rely on the brightness sensor being accurate enough otherwise it’s gonna be brighter than it needs to be.

good thing to hear about better efficiency though.

                  • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Those are usually adjustable anyway based on preferred lighting level, and again that technology will continue to improve as companies look to put a camera array in the front of the watch for video calling.

WIth the 2 competing Ultra watch brands, we're now officially in the smartwatch computing era.

I remember when Galaxy watch 4 was rumored to have blood glucose sensor…
3 years later, I don't think they'll have it any time soon.

      • +1

My father is still using my 10y old Galaxy Note 4 with SpO2 sensor (+IR remote, S-pen, few replaceable batteries, micro SD…) . Why do you need watch other than Sleep Tracking & active sports? For everything else the SmartPhone (not iPhone) is the best ;)

        • Allows you to keep your phone away from you in a different place at night.

so pity I missed ont he ultra from jb

    • +1

Yeah, that was a stupidly good deal.

    • Plenty of BNIB Ultras in marketplace for $700-$750

      • +3

Those scalpers are the reason why most people are unable to get one.

        • Be that as it may.
You can still buy one for a reasonable price.

Also, JB didn’t let me purchase two watches on the same card. Doubt scalpers made much of a difference - the prices were insane.

        • My mate at JB said a bloke rocked up with 4 mates and got 5 of them (they had a strict limit of 1 per person), I hope that bloke is one of those guys that struggle to sell them on marketplace.

Same as jewlery, always 2* overpriced (regular 50% discount). The difference is that the gold goes up & outdated tech down ;)

FYI new series X design coming out this yr

    • This rumour seems to have evaporated. CAD mockups for the new watches have the same design, but larger screens.

      • I think it’s about time we hit the 50mm mark.

  • Wait for 2 months, and you will have a new Apple Watch released. Not worth investing in this atm

    • +4

      And pay full retail price.

  • Series 8 will be 2 years old by Sept/Oct, am I right? Series 9 is the current series and Series 10 is due end of the year? Or am I wrong?

    • Correct. Series 7-9 has seen barely any significant improvements so this is a great price regardless of its age.

      • Series 7 brought a slightly larger screen but more importantly an actual usable keyboard.
Series 8 and 9 don’t have much by comparison.

        • 9 has 2000nits screen, local Siri, those are big differences. Not sure why people keep saying there not much.

    • +1

Partner has the series 9 and I feel it is what the Apple Watch should be when it comes to refinement - not revolutionary but fast, good battery life, great display and features compared to previous models.

Friends and family use lots of different models over the last several years and in my opinion the series 7 was when the watch started to be grown up and at a minimum I would recommend that, 8 and 9 depending on budget.

The JB Hi-Fi series 8 deal was a banger for those who were able to get one.

      • +2

I upgraded to the ultra from a stainless steel series 6. Beside the screen size, battery life and material I don’t notice a huge difference tbh. The speed seems very similar.

        • +1

At least the battery for ultra is not bad and with the half price deal from JB, I finally moved from Huawei to Apple. Still, if you don’t wanna spend that much money, and have 2 week battery life, Huawei is a better choice.

          • +1

@hawkeye93: Yes the ultra is better but still behind other watches (Fitbit for example). However, the Apple Watch works so well with iPhone. I have been using an Apple Watch since series 3 and would be too hard for me moving to a different brand.

            • @fozzie: What fitbit would you recommend

              • +1

@stickymoo: My husband has the Fitbit sense and he likes it. He only needs to charge every few days. Google bought Fitbit so I would also look into Pixel watches. Fitbits are fantastic for sleep and sport tracking and need charging far less. I wanted to give my husband the Apple Watch 6, after he heard it needs charging so often he said he prefers to stick to the Fitbit.
