Does Anyone Know How to Get a Tax Invoice/Receipt from Viofo for Purchased Dashcam?

Hi all,

I recently bought a dashcam from Viofo AU via this deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/852180) - thank you for a great bargain.

However I did not receive a tax invoice/receipt from them. In fact, I have received nothing but an order confirmation email, Auspost tracking email and order complete email. None of these are legitimate tax invoices and have no ABN.

I tried contacting them through various avenues including:

Does anyone been able to get one in the past? Or do you guys have any other tips on how I can get my hands on this please?

TIA

  • Imagine if you needed warranty support !!!

    • Warranty support for my previously purchased Viofo units via Amazon has been fine.

But I've also bought maybe 8 Viofo units over the years and none have failed. Only one I had an issue with and it was due to the memory card.

      JV, “you’ve done it again”.

  • Their "about us" page lists them as Viofo Ltd, which is not an Australian company (I can't find any reference to Viofo on ASIC), and there is also an international number.

You might be buying from an International store tbh.
If that is the case, there is no applicable ABN.

I've looked on my Amazon purchases and I have to "request invoice" from the seller too.

I'd be interested to know if they are GST-registered.

    • How does it work purchasing foreign stuff (Newegg) can you still claim it?

      • Claim what?

Yes, you can claim any foreign (and even local) purchases without a receipt so long as you can provide adequate records to prove that the purchase actually occurred at the price you are claiming back.

You can use your bank statement to confirm the applicable exchange rate charged at the time.\

Overseas businesses are obviously not required to have an ABN.

What you can't do, if you are a small business, is claim back the GST portion of the cost unless you have an actual Tax Invoice.

          Thanks

I have a heap of it gear over the years (about to do some late tax) and trying to figure out what to claim.. tricky stuff when you work on IT.

no idea how much of my homelab I can claim. Obviously 100% is not realistic but it keeps me in the industry too,… So need to find a middle ground

          • @hamwhisperer: You need to keep a diary for a typical four week period, recording the number of hours of work-related use and the number of hours of personal use. A simple Excel file is fine. You will need to keep that file for the ATO to review if you are ever audited.

You calculate the average percentage of work use vs personal use over that four week period then multiply the percentage of time the item is used for work by the cost of the item (or over the full year, if applicable), to determine the applicable proportion that you can claim as a deduction.

Note that if you are using any of the home office shortcut methods for calculating deductions the above process may not be applicable as office equipment and software is normally assumed to be included.

Depreciation rules may also be applicable if the item cost you more than $300.

            • @AngoraFish: What about educational? Little home lab? a POE switch? A little PC to run docker containers - memory for a NAS? The whole lot - there's all kinds of receipts.

Dozens, hundreds in my case over a … very long time..

I wanna find the right compromise between "this is reasonable and has helped me keep my job and skill up" vs "I am stupid and wanting to get audited"

No idea what the right ratio is.

    • Did you get a reply?

      • yes they replied and were very helpful

  • I bought mine from in 2018 from Linelink Online who was a distributor for Viofo at that time.
