Baby Formula Suggestion

Just curious which baby formula did you guys for newborn.

We started on Apatil as that's what was being used at the hospital. However, haven't explored the options given the are lots of brands on the shelf in this category.

If your kid's already drinking one brand without a fuss, stick with it. No point experimenting till the child refuses to drink.

    • I'll counter this, just buy what ever is cheapest, then you don't get stuck with them on one brand. Best to get through a few different types when they are a couple of weeks old.

    • That is not what the OP is asking…

    • Thanks. Yeah makes sense

I’d agree with this. If it’s working stick to it unless they won’t drink it, they’re not growing as they should or they don’t tolerate it. I do get Noppy’s point too, but as someone whose kid never took to formula or bottles I would have been happy just to have an option that worked so I could mixed feed.

From what I understand all the formulas are similar in terms of nutrition and baby will start some solids at between 4-6 months so will start getting other nutrients as part of their diet between 6-12months.

All the best with the newborn OP.

There is only one proper baby formula and thats the "natural one"

no not everyone can use the “natural one “ so fed is best ..

  • This thing is trial and error. Whatever your little one likes, use it. They are all the same.

We went through Aptamil, Nan Optipro, and then luckily Karicare which was the one they ended up not spitting up (or very rarely). The improvement in sleep quality and time from Nan to Karicare was worth all the wasted Nan.

We also noticed they put on a huge amount of weight going from Nan to Karicare, it may just been timing but I think NZ cows might be better than Nestle cows.

    • Even i started my kid from NAN but wasn't taking much. So we moved to Karicare its going good since last 18 months.

    • Thanks. Karicare seems to be general consensus on this thread. Will try it out when we need to change the formula

      • out of 5 kids i never used nan , kari care is pretty good but they are basically all great quality

  • We just stuck with what the hospital started us on with both kids. First child was on Aptamil until he developed a milk protein allergy so we moved to one with a denatured protein as directed by the paediatrician. Second child is on NAN Optipro and has been fine - there is no reason to change them if there are no issues so we haven't. She's just turned one, so hopefully the last of the formula for her and we can move over to cow's milk when we've finished what we have in the pantry!

We started with NAN and baby had a lot of issues with upset tummy, switched to bubs organic and its been perfect.

  • Little Oak Goats Milk formula from day 1. So far no issues, he is 3 months old. Available at Costco also

  • Used Karicare with my twins. Had no problems whatsoever, they loved it and gained a lot of weight while on it.

    • Thanks. Just curious at what age did you switch them to karicare or had them on it from the start?

      • We switched from breast milk to formula at around 4 m, started with Aptamil and NAN before switching to Karicare.
So they've been on Karicare since 5 mo.

  • Went with A2 as that's what my wife's friends used too. As long as there are no obvious issues, then just keep Apatil.

If you do decide to change, I was told not to switch immediately but to do it gradually. Mix some in first, then more and eventually replace.

    Try one of these:

    👨 + 👩 = 👶
    👨🏾 + 👩🏾 = 👶🏾
    👨🏻 + 👩🏻 = 👶🏻

We used NAN. Kid was in NICU and needed to continue and so never deviated. NAN also is one of the unsweetened formulas which is preferable (yes, baby formula should taste like bland crp to adults).

Breastfeeding. We all 11 kids had sucked our mom's nipples at least 1 year each as is there is no tomorrow! After that usual meals.

  • Anything not from China, you don’t t want to feed your Bub melamine!

  • i had used the aldi baby formula but that was 5 years ago but i don’t know if they still sell it ..any formula passes australian standards ..
if the baby was in nicu , i got told they get batches of different formulas donated on rotation so it just depends which batch they are using atm as they don’t want to “recommend “ or influence parents into using a certain brand ..

  • We used mumamoo, one of the better ones out there

  • All 4 of my kids drank nan comfort 1 through to 3 with no issues.

  • My first was ok with karicare and it was affordable and easy to find. This bub didn’t tolerate it well so we are on infacare which happens to be the cheapest one available.

  • I used Karicare for both of my kids.

One thing the paed did say was not to change from the 'first' one as they get the extra nutrients from other food. He said breast milk doesn't change to add stuff, so you don't need to change formulas.

And don't believe the hype about the toddler milk! Cows' milk is fine with the nutrients they get from a balanced diet.

  • When I had my kids, I went to my local convenience store and saw what they stocked.

Chances are you run out of formula in the middle of the night or during some kind of brain fail or emergency and priority will be getting whatever is easiest to get.

Often all these extra special formulas are only available from places with restricted opening hours.

You'd buy your own milk from a local store if you got caught short, no harm buying baby's milk from same place as long as it is a reasonably mainstream brand.
