Need a New Gaming/Work PC for Monday

My home PC let out the magic smoke, and apparently the mobo has shorted out… Appears rodent has been in there… Not sure how, but they will show me

So in need of a new PC for Monday, which means picking up tomorrow/Saturday :( Very limiting.

Requirements:
PC not Laptop - personal preference
Use: Admin Work and Gaming.. Bolders Gate 3… CS GO2 etc
Windows machine
Budget: $1800
Location: SE in Melbourne
Black Case, not white…

The need for one for Monday limits my options sadly…
and its been several years since I built one so very out of touch with the tech terms and whats what these days.

Does the AMD/Intel really matter these days?
The search so far shows not much in my budget range…

Why do so many computer stores have horrendous reviews? High expectations?

Anyway this is what I've found so far - Which would appear best option.?

TL:DR - I need a new PC quick, which would you pick from above - or you know of a better deal on pre-builts

Any other stores I can walk into and buy prebuilt PC's in SE Melbourne with decent service?

Thanks

Why not find a basic Dell SFF, ex-lease pc for work (<$300), and put together the gaming pc you desire?

Surely you can wait a lil while longer to play games if it means you get the better pc?

    • New work starts Monday dont want to put them off.

        Use: Admin Work

Find ex-lease PC from FB marketplace etc

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/desktop-computer?noexpired=…

RTX 4070 should be what you're looking for in your budget

Again, if you hold off on the proper gaming PC side of things

yea been going through the OzB listings.. havent found any pre-configured- in Melb… There are in other states.

    • Agree with this. Shoot out a message to friends and family ask if they have anything you can borrow. Offer dinner/$$ compensation/a few pints depending on the person. You never know someone might have upgraded recently and still have something usable sitting in their office that would be fine to use for work.

In parallel, look on Dell/lenovo refurb and other sites; as well as gumtree marketplace etc for ex lease laptops and find something that can handle work, I assume this is contract work right or are they just allowing BYOD?

If I can be honest, it’s super unlikely most computer shops worth their salt will have a machine prebuilt, tested and ready to go tomorrow. There will be a build and 24hr load test delay, even on advertised models

This leaves you in a tough spot tbh - I like the second hand temporary option, if you can get away with it.

Otherwise, are you handy? It’s not too difficult to plug the pieces in together- you just won’t have beautiful cable management or a ready to go windows install

    • My concern with buying interstate etc is delivery times… Some reports "in stock" yet go into weeks or longer..

Or totally disappearing which can happen anywhere i guess.

I've used to build my own, but don't have the eyes for lining up pins and shit these days plus CBF and time limitations. Shit spot to be in to be honest.

      • For best deals you can go to BPC or Evatech in Melbourne but none of them will have anything ready in stock.

Last time i bought from BPC in March this year, they took about 3 business days to build it.

      • How did you go @pharkurnell? Find a friendly shop?

Went with Nebula who do gigs on here… will take more time, but shit happens.

happy with the service and communication so far.

New PC showed up today. So far very happy

Can you not phone a friend or family member and ask if someone has a spare laptop you can loan for a while?

You're not going to find a computer store that has a RTX 4070 gaming PC built ready to go in their store, and even if there are they will be ex-demo, or some really tragically overpriced or under-spec build that was made to rip off unknowing customers or the ones desperate to need it on the same day.

You're not going to find a computer store that has a PC built ready to go in their store,

You maybe totally correct.. But the ones i linked are apparently all in stock… But would call em before going there to see if they are lying.

… or some really tragically overpriced or under-spec build that was made to rip off unknowing customers or the ones desperate to need it on the same day.

This is why I asked about if the ones linked are decent value.
Also several years since I've put one together, I just wanted info on specs these days…

My head is fried from googling most of the day looking into intel/amd, reviews on makes/models of GPU, ram etc..

Centrecom does appear to be selling "ready to go" systems here.

        This section in particular
        https://www.centrecom.com.au/gaming-pcs

The 2 least crappy options that I can see are this

        Core i5 12400F RX 7800 XT $1,699

        and
        Core i5 14400F RTX 4060 Ti $1,759

Option 1 has a higher tier graphics card (7800XT) with more VRAM (16GB) but it has an older generation CPU with DDR4 memory

Option 2 has Nvidia graphics card (RTX 4060ti) less VRAM (8GB) but newer generation CPU with DDR5 memory

However option 1 will give you better gaming performance anyway despite the older generation Alder Lake processor, the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB is significantly lower end than the 7800 XT.

And you also get 2 free games with the AMD card..

Keep in mind this is still worse value than the builds NebulaPC are selling. For instance, their 7800 XT pc is $1488 and it comes with AMD AM5 + DDR5 memory.
