  • Maybe just me, or missed something, but when I added to the card, and checkout, it ended up $13.99. It is not a big difference, just not sure why happened

    • 12.22 for me.

As the owner of nearly 8000 vintage blades the modern Wilkies are not regarded as good blades.

At the money you're saving using safety razors vs carts, doesn't your face deserve atleast an average blade? e.g Asta SP.

Cheap, yes …good? No. I'm not negging just pointing out the prevailing sentiment amongst experienced users of them.

    • +1

      Absolutely agree.

Don't go all out on some blades because they are on sale or some that everyone says is "the best"

Go hit up vshod or razorbladesclub and get yourself some samples.

There is only one true way to see what blade works best for you (for me wizamet iridium super or voshkod)

There's a lot of very good blades out there - and certain blades are better in different razors. And folks preferences, skin types. So a LOT of variables.

You don't need to paY big $$$ for excellent blades but not sure why for literally a few cents more per blade, you'd not get somthing near universally regarded as dependable, solid - not just cheap.

As they say the poor man pays twice.

Average rating of 4.6 out of 2400 reviews.
Don't know how you call them no good without context.

      • +4

Well fair call - but some folks don't know shyte from shinola - as they say. I've been a member of a bunch of shaving forums (yeah sad but such places exist) and nobody ever raved about modern Wilkies……vintage ones? Yes 100% but the modern stuff was made in Brazil, China and other places and regarded as below average.

But do not take my word for it - go buy some if the Amazon reviews resonate more with you. I didn't neg, not sure what more I'm meant to do. :-)

        • My question was genuine as I'm looking at getting blades for the first time and trying to work out a good starting point.

          • +2

@Duece1995: My answer was genuine too - trying to assist.

          • @Duece1995: have a few brands in the bathroom, all shave great new, some last longer, but they are so cheap you throw when blunt and it doesn’t hurt the budget whether you get 3 shaves or 6 shaves …. it’s like 4c per shave vs 2c per shave …. bought a box will see how they go …

          • @Duece1995: @Duece1995 Everyone has their favourite blades: you’ve just gotta find the right ones for you.

For me it’s Astra or Feather blades, although I’ve gone off Astra as they’re made in Russia and I don’t like what’s happening in Ukraine.

It’s a little more expensive the first time around, but many places like beard and blade multi packs, so you can try different brands and work out what suits your razor and face. Here’s and example

  • FWIW here's a quote froma discussion on them over at Badger & Blade - the gist is WS have made blades all over - different grades, these are Indian made ones and regarded as ok, good value but thats their strength (cheap rather than great).

I stand by my 'You're already saving loads, so buy something a tad better' comment:

Wilkinson Swords can be made in Germany, India, China, and some of the older tucks could be British. The German made blades seem the sharpest, and those from India a little smoother and less sharp. (German blades are usually in a black plastic container, the India blades are usually white or sold in a Saloon pack, if that makes it easier to identify). Not sure about the Chinese blades, not having had one cross my path.

The British made blades were black, and I believe are not out of production. - Sadly, those were probably the best Wilkinson Sword blades, which lasted seemingly forever, with a great sharp/smooth mix, with their triple coating, at least for me

For some reason when I saw the image of the packet I thought it was a deal for Weet-Bix

      I wouldn't recommend eating these

        At least not without milk

  • It may be an unpopular but every single Gillette blade I've used has been awful. These and Silver Blue's felt like a machete on my face.

    • Thats very unusual - for a number of reasons, firstly Gillette do make many of the best reviewed blades in shaving communities - but also they from the same factories, quite often make many of the best reviewed NON-GILLETTE branded blades e.g their St Petersburg factory, as much as I DESPISE Russia - makes the very well regarded Perma-Sharp blades.

I agree there are some bad Gillette blades but they're usually a niche or tiny market blade - so perhaps it's that your razor has unusual head geometry or it's a reverse placebo effect? i.e you load a Gillette and tell yourself it'll be a dud shave.

Is very unusual - have you tried any vintage Gillettes?

      • +1

I've tried Wilkinson, Silver Blue which I hated, Platinum which was average. I've got some green 7'O Clock's still that I haven't used from a sampler pack.

Favourites in general are Asco Red's and Shark Super Stainless.

No vintage that I know of, but I'll keep an eye out for the Perma Sharp's!

Wow - well hey look a good way to look at it is that your faves are VERY cheap. So not a bad problem to have. :-)
