  • How good are these compared to Kathmandu or Macpac(I know that they themselves aren't great quality jackets at least in terms of durability)?

    • +2

Been wearing one since prior 2020

      • +62

Don't you get a bit hot every summer?

      • +9

You should take it off when you shower

      • +4

        They change suppliers every year

      • +1

        Stinky

      • +1

Likewsie but only in winter. Bloody great value compared to Macpac and other expensive brands.

      • I've got both the old one and this new one. It feels significanty worse quality, can feel mainly feathers instead of down, and the shell is more plasticy. BUT saying that, $50 these days is very cheap for a down puffa, the new one has a nicer cut and actually does keep you pretty warm. It's good for around tha yard and camping and stuff.

        • I got the new sweatshirt with merino blend and was actually surprised with it.

The new puffer shell might be to reduce the Geroge Costanza swishing 🤷‍♂️

    • +1

macpac is decent quality and the default ozbargain favourite puffer jacket but

      kathmandu is mid quality..at best.

      • Aldi is Good Different

Just need Coles to sell a puffer jacket now

        • +4

There are too many puffer jackets already

    • +5

Aldi is 800fill, if you are compared to Macpac Halo it is 600/650fill. So on paper Aldi is better. I have both and both are decent quality.

      • +1

Just a note. The Macpac will have a code with the jacket that you enter into a website that will tell you what the Actual down was that went into that jacket. Mine have always been above 700 and mostly either just under or just over 750 even if the label says its 650 fill.

        • Yep, most are like this. I'm not confident the aldi stuff will have 'guaranteed over 800 fill' but even if they aim for that and miss a bit, it's still decent. I think the composition might be off though, not sure what is normal, but 10% feather seems high.

          • +1

@Calvin27: Yes, at 800 I would've thought it should be goose down.

      • I have both too and they both do the job well.

      • +1

        i just got one.

Absolutely does not feel like 800fill, and nowhere on the packing does it suggest that, at all.

        • I also noticed the ethical source tag is also gone now..

        • Yep it's 90% feathers, only 10% down. Same warmth as the Uber but with the unnecessary puff

          • @spy: Uber? Does it say 90% feathers and 10% down on the packaging? So it's basically been enshittified?

Oh wait I can see it in the description that it's 90% feathers and 10% down. I thought it'd be the same thing…

        • So it feels bad or good?

    • +1

i bought one in 2019 used during uber cycle delivery rains and storms. Still looks like new and wear to parties and functions now.

      • Those were better quality than these

        • Crap so it's worse now?!

  • What's with all the puffy jacket posts?

    • +29

      it be cold

    • +2

      maybe because its winter?

    • Its been raining…where's that Rushfaster umbrella

    • Winter in bottom half of Australia

      • +1

What season is it in the top half?

        • +2

          Dry season

    • Australian homes are cold, meme is to wear the pupper jacket at home.

  • +2

I've been rocking one of these bad boys since 2018/2019, and it has served me very well. Missus thinks that it now looks VERY worn and I should replace it. Going to be either this or Macpac from the BCF deal. Can someone comment on the quality/durability of Macpac?

EDIT: it was $50 back then, props to Aldi for not succumbing to inflation

    • When that happens it is more evident they prob gonna cheap out somewhere…….on material?

      • +1

Could be but Aldi has never let us down. Could always return within 12 months if there are quality issues/compromises.

        • -3

Buy in winter, return in summer. Solid plan. Ozbargain way.

          • @Calvin27: True OzBers from the down under

          • +5

@Calvin27: True Ozb is looking for deals not scamming

            • +2

@rmsprs: True OzB is knowing when someone is having a bit of fun in the comments.

    • Can you elaborate on the durability? Worn in what sense? As in the shell is starting to scuff or has it lost a lot of feathers or stitching has come undone? Do you wear it often? I've had a down jacket for 10-11 years but need a new one, this looks like a decent buy.

  • +2

I had bought one in 2018. It was so worth it. Everyone in the office asked what brand it was and were shocked when I told them the price.

I lost 30 kilos since then and it was too loose. Bought a Patagonia sweater and Kathmandu Heli jacket. Love Patagonia, took it to a Himalayas trip and kept me warm. It is so light but too hot for Sydney.

I wear Heli to office, is ok, light. Has a loose thread so quality is so so. Found Macpac to be quite heavy and very warm. If needed will buy another Patagonia.

    • exactly, for the price this jacket has no business being this good!

      • Have to add Aldi is 800 fill vs Macpac is 600. Higher fill is lighter.

Fill is just one of the criteria as amount of fill has a bigger role.

Will buy one for the teenagers.

        • +2

30kg is lot. Did you stop talking advantage of all the OzB junk food posts?

          • +1

@WatchNerd: Don’t buy anymore of the KFC, Pizza Hut deals.

Gravitated to GYG, Mad Mex kilo burrito and Uber eats.

            • -1

@Commenter: It sounds like you have a 30kg hole to fill. Get some junk (KFC, Maccas etc) in your trunk.

        • I weighted my Aldi size M vs Macpac size S. Aldi is slightly lighter 10-15g. But Aldi has two layer of inner liner and a useless hood. So I think both filled about the same amount of down.

          • @Burger R: What’s the weight of Aldi. Patagonia is -280 grams with Macpac -550 grams.

So Aldi is better than Macpac for less than half price.

            Boring colours.

            • @Commenter: Halo hoodless size S 530g. This is just paper spec. Need to also check other, for example Macpac has a waist drawstring and my version of Aldi does not. Zip quality, fit…

    • @Commenter: How's the Aldi compare to the Heli and Halo re warmth and packability?

      • +1

Aldi is warmer than Heli. I wear Heli when temperatures are above 5 degrees and Patagonia when less than that. Heli is thinner and doesn’t make you look the Michelin man.

It is subjective for each person as I run a little warm.

I would definitely buy Aldi based on warmth and price over the other brands.

        • Thanks! Might pop over to Aldi to get one as a warm jacket for travel. Sounds better than the Heli/Uber which I find barely warmer than a fleece jacket but without the simplicity of being able to throw it in the washing machine.

          • @TurnipHead: You can wash the jackets in washing machines with down special detergent.

    • Patagonia is good, they back their products too & repair them.

  • +9

This joint is turning into ozpufferjacketbargain.com

    • Nah, it is turning into oz heat pump dryers

      • Make sure you dry you ozpufferjacket on low heat in the oz heat pump dryer

        • Bought a Solt dryer. Wife made me cancel and buy a Bosch. In the last two weeks there 8-10 dryer posts.

Have not washed my jackets in the last three years since I bought them. They still have the original folded creases.

  • +5

Aldi puffer jacket punches above its weight, especially with the 800 fill.

  • +1

Still not a fan of the Michelin Man look ones, which is most of them lol

    • Yeah a lot of people not keen on the michelin man style. You can get puffers in an argyle pattern, but these seem not to go on sale as often.

    • -1

I have a good looking Industrie shirt-style jacket instead, 75%/25% cotton-poly shell, with light poly padding.

  • +6

ALDI's website is dinosaur, they don't like you to check the details of the item…

    • +1

      Bad…different

    • I don't think they have much details on the stuff they find.

  • +1
    • Wow that is one impressive Video, its a shame that the product links dont work anymore.

      • There is an Aussie website for the products https://nikwax.com.au/

Glad he done the testing! he has some interesting videos on his page.,

        • Amazon sells them too. I've gotten the down wash and it has worked well for the past 3 down jackets or so.

  • +2

How many grams of 800 fill power is in these jackets? Standard Kathmandu puffer is 600 fill power & depending on size (medium being the average) 170g of 600fill power down.

The higher the fill power, the less down that's required as it's better insulating & the lighter the fill is because it's warmer.

  • -1

Beat jacket ever, have been wearing >5 years and still looks new, super warm

  • doesn't come in white :c

  • +3

my previous comparison https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15431618/redir based on owning both

TDLR: Halo is warmer, Aldi is very likely sufficient for everyone on the coast that isnt Tasmania. Although Melbourne could be on the edge at night

    • +1

I have a feeling you're right. I have a 550 fill down jacket and hardly needed it when I was living in Sydney, the Aldi jacket could be warmer and would be more than sufficient for me in Sydney weather. Depends on the individual to an extent though, I get pretty warm just walking around in a down jacket (although the limited breathability of down jackets probably doesn't help with that).

    • -4 some mornings where I am in central VIC - Halo it is then?

      • Depends if you are walking around for short periods or being still watching sports etc. would definitely go for the halo - if you are too hot at times (eg during the day) you can wear fewer layers underneath. However if you are sitting watching the footy then you might want something even warmer than the halo or at least buy some thermal underwear and a few layers and then the Halo on top. The Halo isn’t really good enough for a -4C jacket (you wouldn’t take it snow camping, for example) but for short periods it’s totally fine.

  • Is it tomorrow or Saturday. I thought it was Saturday

  • It's a ducking good buy.

Have one from last year. Still going strong. Keeps me toasty.

I think it has ripstop material as well vs other cheapy ones, which rip more easily.

  • can someone open it and make sure it is 800+ counts?

  • +2

sounds like the missing number is the weight of down

e.g. 'A higher fill power number doesn’t automatically mean a jacket will be warmer, as quantity is still an important factor … 3 grams of 800 fill power takes up the same amount of space as 5 grams of 550 fill power.

Other factors that affect warmth include whether the jacket has a hood, or how long the jacket is. This highlights why you need to consider how you plan to use the jacket, and whether you need to prioritise warmth, weight, or cost.' - https://www.kathmandu.com.au/blog/what-is-down-fill-power-an…

  • Tasmania = Macpac Halo
    Melbourne = Aldi down jacket
    Sydney/Perth/Adelaide = Kmart puffer

    • +1

      Macpac Halo 600 = $99.99
      Aldi down jacket 800 = $49.99
      Kmart puffer = $25-$39

Macpac won on voting so far.

    • I don't have a puffer jacket, but wouldn't it be more like this (taking into account that some people feel the cold more than others):
      Tasmania/Canberra = Macpac Halo
      Melbourne/Adelaide = Macpac Halo/Aldi down jacket
Sydney = Aldi down jacket/Kmart puffer
      Perth/Brisbane = Kmart puffer/none

      • Possibly. I get quite warm even in my cheap old down jacket so that’s why I said Aldi only, but there are heaps of people who wear the Macpac around Melbourne.

      • +2

Brisbane = none. Just because we live in the Sunshine State doesn't mean we're all nudists.

        • Well I suppose if it never really gets cold, you can do that!

    • I can get away with the Uniqlo most days of winter here in Adelaide, bought like 5 years ago in Japan for 40 aud. Think it's like 100 here now? Fine for 14c days

  • +1

    This, or Uniqlo

  • +1

i bought one in 2019 used during uber cycle delivery rains and storms. Still looks like new and wear to parties and functions now.

    • +1

I presume you wear the black one at more formal functions?

  • Responsibly-sourced down fill

A bit off topic but what will be non-Responsibly-sourced down fill?

Birds are dead before .. So?

  • +1

is this supposed to be warm even with just a shirt on underneath?

(sydney morning, i still feel cold)

    • Shhh Sydney is in denial about winter. Just look at how poorly our homes are built.
