Recommend Me a Laptop/Chromebook - Budget under $600

Hey folks, My 7-year old MacBook died on me and I’m looking for something to replace it.

Meanwhile I got a PC for most things so this laptop will only be used for watching Netflix/ media, surfing the web etc. Won’t be using it for gaming/ MS Office/ heavy use.

I need something which is lightweight and has a great display, and minimum 8 GB of RAM. If it’s a convertible/ detachable that’s an added bonus but not a deal breaker. Anything 13-15 inch is fine. New or refurbished is fine.

I started looking at laptops online but I can see Windows laptops and Chromebooks are selling in the similar price range so wondering if there’s an advantage going for one over the other?

What do you good folks recommend?

Thanks.

  • We can't get nicely specced Chromebook here better to get it from US. If you have any friends or family in US get it from there.

  • Lenovo Duet 5 with 8gb Ram works perfectly fine for me as a daily use machine. The OLED is really nice. Battery life seems to last forever. Current prices seem ridiculous at the moment though.

  • Why not just get a tablet?

    • Need to use for emails/ research so keyboard is a must.

      • Depending on how often, you could consider either a bluetooth keyboard or keyboard case.

  • +1

    Thought about a refurb?

  • I sold my Mac book air for a Lenovo Duet 5 and been pretty happy with it. Just use it for emails, occasional streaming, set up bills etc. I wouldnt exactly call it lightweight as what you think Chromebooks would be, I would have waited for the Duet 3 if I knew when it was being released at the time. The screen is quite fragile though, I dropped it on the couch and it hit the keyboard and there was a shatter. Lenovo quoted $800 to fix, thank fk I had Merchandise protection 😅 battery life is also very good and charges quickly

    • Thanks for the reco, too expensive now though.

  • I’m leaning more towards a Windows than a ChromeOS since the former will give me an option to use Office/ other apps if need be. Good ones in both are in the similar price bracket so thinking Windows.
