      Amazon has massive packs for super cheap. Different blades work better for different people. I have super thick facial hair and prefer Feather myself.

      You can pick up multipacks of razors on Amazon with different brands to check out. Like the other commenters I found the Astras to be my favourites, but everyone is different.

      Yes, they're generic. Design has been around for about 100 years so not going anywhere anytime soon. Depending on brand they may come in a cardboard pack for even less environmental impact. I generally stick a new one in each week so a pack of 100 lasts me a couple of years. For less the price of two pints of beer.

      They are actually reasonable blades.
      But there can be a lot of personal preference and it is surprising how different standardized bits of metal can feel and how one person loves something which others hate.

      Yes they are generic, thats the great thing about this "timeless" design which has remained the standard for over 100 years, and why there is no money in the design so they focus on marketing gimmic 20 blade things.
      I recommend a mixed pack of blades so you can try a range and see what you like, they are $1 to $2 a pack of 5.
      Dont buy from supermarket, they put an insane price on them so they dont make the plastic blades look bad.

    Got this for $10 at Kogan in Aug last year and it's my go to blade. Not butterfly opening, so a bit more time to change sides of blade but works much better for me than say Schick razor.

    I've been on this razor for ages and it's completely converted me from cartridge razors. The included blades are pretty good, but once you run out, its fairly easy to find imported blades for cheap like Gillette Nacet. I bought about a lifetimes supply for not much years ago and have been very happy with them. Also a hack for blade disposal, go to your reject shop/ local bargain shop and buy one of those money tins with the aussie currency note prints on. You can fill that to the brim, label it, and then throw it in the recycle bin once you tape the thing shut.

    As someone who owns several dozen safety razors and I think around 8000 vintage blades (yeah got a lil out of control for a while there!) - my 2c are the head's design is good - looks a copy of the Merkur 34c - which is a pretty fooproof, design thats well regarded.

    The handle though is BAD, as in near dangerous bad - shaving lather is slippery, thats a core feature of it - so it's sliding down the razors handle & while they've got mild knurling midway up - where you will most hold, at the end is completely slick! Thats a drop waiting to happen.

    And I experienced this first hand and reflexes from cricketing days kicked in (wicketkeeper!) and I went to grab it before it hit ground, very nasty slash across a bunch of finger tips.

    So honestly I'd spend a tad more, buy another razor with a good head AND handle. As the included blades with this one are generic crap - and you'll need more soon regardless. But you must have a good handle on your razor, is near essential IMHO.

      However, I'm taking your warning seriously. What would you recommend as a value-for-money upgrade to this particular one? It seems Merkur has a good rep, and you mention the 34c in particular.

        @thisisscotts on a whim I thought I'd check this thread & noticed this, should have tagged or DM'd me - but ya got lucky (or some might say not!)

        Ummm look the Merkurs are not good value for money - harsh truth they're not. They are very good designs, with lots of varients etc - hence why they're often copied quite shamelessly. But they use cheap materials - now this isn't so much of an issue as pundits would imply as having a 'potmetal'(zamak) razor isn't a problem when the top chroming etc is in place and if this is treated well it'll last for decades.

        34c was the 'bog standard' razor tip for decades - likely still is. Good head geometry, build quality solid, very tactile handle, nice balance, foolproof 3 piece design (which IMHO is superior to the 'turn to open' butterfly design as it's near unbreakable.

        So while it's super easy for me to as it's YOUR $$$ say, sure spend ~$70 on a 34c, I hope you will see the extra effort I make with this solution.

        Again this is another beauty of 3 piece razors, you can replace components - so use the head of the razor you like - which is near identical to the 34c anwyay - and just buy a quality handle that will be as good or better than the 34c - I have hunted for 10mins to find you this.

        Many handles look pretty but they're not going to grip in the hand great - you need that quality knurling thats raspy & makes even a bunch of lather on it no issue. YAQI have a good rep, have had so for years. ~$AUD20 delivered - I just saved you $50 for a better outcome. ;-) And you can just buy a different head & use this handle e.g open comb etc. Cheers.

            Appreciate the kind words - see how you go, there's other similar quality handles there - just lookout for that nice criss cross knurling, as you might prefer silver etc.

            No dramas, OzB is great but I often find opinions are given with no supporting basis - & from strangers thats problematic as is it an expert or just a blowhard. Again cheers for the courtesies, alas they're rare in these parts.

    Sorry but these are pretty garbage. I bought one of these last time it was on sale here and used maybe 10 times and ended up giving it to someone else who in the end threw it out.
    These take longer to shave with and covered my whole neck in little nicks and cuts.
    Why subject yourself to such barbarity? Just save yourself some money and stick to the normal supermarket shavers.

      Just save yourself some money and stick to the normal supermarket shavers.

      Surely you can see that 100 safety razor blades is tons cheaper than a generic 6pack of cartridge razors?

      Not to mention a superior shave once you know what your doing.

          Could be a few things like: maybe going too fast, maybe not using hot water and lathering up right, maybe bad soap, pushing too hard and more - thats just a few off the top of my head.

          I was initially skeptical and also a bit against making the switch, i thought its just for hipsters and isn’t any better.
          But now I'm fully converted.

          Its a closer, smoother shave.
          Better for straight lines and sideburns etc.

          Just buy one to try, take your time while learning and google/ yt how to use em if not confident.

          You wont regret it.

          You can't use the same technique used for a disposable razor for a safety razor. This is like using the same driving technique you use for your van inside a sports car.

          From the sounds of it they didn't invest in learning correct technique and preparation, you HAVE to use shaving cream and know your angles (both in approach and tilt of the razor). When you learn to use a safety razor, you'll get a closer, cleaner shave by far.

      It takes a little practice mate. You need to warm your face and use a wet lather. Then use deliberate strokes on the right angle, and practice getting that angle on all the different curves. You can't just hack at it like with a cart that changes angle for you. When you get it it's magic though.

      You just blamed the tools … that's all.

      It was 2-passes when I used cartridges and now 2-passes with safety razors. Most guys I have seen on YouTube will do 3-passes.

      Yes, but the idea is you use less pressure (basically just the weight of the razor), and you'll get less irritation as a result.

      Takes me a bit longer, but I can now shave every day without irritation. Previously I'd use a Mach 3 and be covered in razor burn.

    I recommend an aliexpress butterfly mechanism far ahead of this, Baili, Yintal, Weishi. $8 to $20.
    Sure its ok to try the DE style with immediate walk in Coles stock, but it has a slippery handle, an agressive edge with notches and the basic screw head is a lot more annoying than the convinience of a butterfly mechanism.

    Bought one a while ago. It's good but I just cbf going back to a razor from an electric one. Yes, it shaves much closer but honestly for me I just dgaf enough to have to go through the hassle of blades, soap/cream etc.

    I had this but returned it. The angle didn’t work for me as I like an extremely close shave.

    If you’ve not used one of these shavers before, be careful you will definitely cut yourself the first few times.

    Got my first one of these a few months ago to try.

    So far, no cuts, less bumps than disposable (coming from dollar shave club but once they changed their design it sucked so I wanted something new). It takes me longer to do a shave than with the cartridge still but I've only used it several times. I find at least on my cheeks I don't quite yet get a super clean shave (parts where it's super soft), but overall am quite happy and prefer the feeling/glide over the cartridge razor catching on everything.

    Still on the first blade, will likely go for that pack of 100 Astras once I've gone through - for reference I don't grow a tonne of facial hair/is quite patchy and it grows quite slow so once a week ish for me is normal use. Blades will probably last me a lifetime at this rate.

    I've been using one of these for about a year. I was honestly a little underwhelmed at first, but then I went back to a disposable razor while on holiday and only then did I realise how much nicer the safety razor was.

    I can't really compare to any other razors (haven't felt the need to try others), but I haven't found the handle to be slippery nor the blade changing process to be a hassle. I did get a bunch of ingrown hairs and irritation on my neck when I first started using it, but I think this was down to technique with both the razor and the soaps/creams.

      A variety pack and work out what you like. There is a surprising difference in feel of blades and one person's opinion vs another's.

      A lot of the best blades came out of Russia, but there can be supply issues with them now.

    Guys need help here from a noob. I’ve been looking for a razor only for beard line up nothing more. I use the expensive Gillette power glide Fusion cartridge which has an edger/line-up. I don’t even use the main blades as I only use it for line-up. For trimmer I use Philips trimmer which is okay but not the best.

    Can you recommend something easy and safe to use similar to those Gillette cartridges with the line trimmer? I never used Merkur or Gillette Double Edge Safety Razor.
    If there’s another option to lineup my beard that would be great. I just think it’s such a waste to buy those cartridges just to use the lineup blade and not use the main blades.

      FWIW, as someone with a crapload of safety razors and who had a beard for a few years - so you're just wanting to clean up around & outside your beard?

      I find safety razors with an OPEN COMB head design, handy around beards - you might even want to get a shavette. A lot comes down to exactly what you wish to do and user skill/time.

        I’ve Phillips trimmer and use 4-4.5mm. For the line-up I’m using the Fusion blades and clean up using the same line-up blade. It means I don’t use the 5 blades or the main cartridge.

        What are my options? Any links please? Can I use a single blade cartridges as they are safe or use the one on this link?

        I was thinking of using Babyliss trimmer or edger but it’s too expensive.

      If you're repping safety razors you cannot go with anything but a hard soap and brush. They make such nice synthetic ones these days that're very cheap and will last forever.

          Hmmmm Proraso is definitely the 'floor' for shaving soaps - there's a lot of good artisan options out there for small price differences when factored in across how long they last. A good hard soap will last years.

          Yeah, I'm like you a LONG time since I bought any - think I have 30+ artisan ones, will outlive me I suspect.

        You need multiple more strokes vs a multi blade shaver to get ultra smooth finish so around 68 seconds more per shave vs a multi blade.

      I find using my double edged razor takes no longer than on multi blade shavers, likely less as it always took a lot with those to actually get a close shave, hairs getting caught between blades etc vs just quick and easy on the double edged.

          I use Wilkinson Sword Blades in a Wilkinson Sword "The Edger" razor, previously had tried all sorts of cartridges and brands of razor and always had the same issues.

    As mentioned I don’t full shave just use the multi blade cartridge single blade at the back to clear up the neck area and line-up. This is the only reason why I was looking to see if a single blade was you be safe and easy to do.
    Is there any option out there so that I don’t buy expensive cartridges only for lineups and neck hair?

    I just ordered the Babyliss FX Gold clippers and trimmers. Now need a solution for a razor.

      This is exactly what I use mine for. Once you learn your technique a Double Edged Razor with a quality blade will be perfect for this.

        Could you please let me know how many times I can use the double edge blades for the lineups?

        My local barber has a straight blade and he uses them once and throws away the blade. I’m so new to this any help on it would be greatly appreciated.

        For this to work to lineup and get rid of the neck hair do I also need to use shaving foam or gel or a brush? If I use foam I can’t see the beard line.

          It will really depend on your particular hair how long the blade lasts as people have lighter or heavier hair that will effect how long the blade lasts.

          I use a brush and a shaving cream (taylor of old bond street is my preference), am able to very visible see beard lines. I would assume the straight blade throwaway thing is partly hygiene for your barber?

            I’m just a bit scared if I’ll be able to make the line and not cut myself.

            In terms of the blade I don’t have very thick beard. Do you use one side of the blade and then the other one? Do they rust as they will go through water and all. My Gillette fusion blades show signs of rust after 2 weeks and after that I throw them away. Not sure how others keep them for a month.

            So just to be clear if the blades are sharp I can use them a week?

              @justanick: My Wilkinson Sword blades only seem to rust if I don't rinse them off properly, otherwise they last a long time without rusting.

              Just be careful and aware where on your neck the hair changes direction so you aren't going against the grain and you should be fine. It's an easy shave.

    I am a first timer using this razor. I can say it’s very good. I even bought the Wilkinson Sword Blades as recommended by @witheredcouch.

    My only issue is the handle is small and the top is big which obstructs me from viewing the line-up if I’m pulling up south to north direction on my cheeks. The side burn edges or lineup the moustache area.
    If there was a thinner safety razor with a bigger handle that would be awesome.

    Any recommendations around here?

      From one Nick to another, honestly this is more about being relatively new to doing this - than the razor. The head on that cheap one is pretty normal sized - you should see the ones on some others. Its just that youre used to a tiny cartridge head etc - so will need to take a lil slower, move your head to see better etc.

      As with most tools TECHNIQUE is everything. People who are very good safety razor users know to steal the techniques straight razor users use e.g pulling your skin above your ears and flexing jaw when doing down cheeks to get it more taut.

      Be careful going 'against the grain' which is the pattern of hair orientation on your face - you should get to know this and ALWAYS go with the grain the first pass. If you're doing well you might not need a 2nd pass etc. The more passes you do the more likely you will get shaving burn & cuts.

      My face neck has hairs going one way on cheeks, different on neck then changing in the middle etc - is a 101 concept.

      So I would say hang in with current razor as is a YOU issue not it, but if you want to get smaller razor - go for one of the many cheapies on AliExpress e.g this one

      And unless you've very big hands, you should be choking up on the handle anyway - gives better control - again just takes getting used to. Have a look on Ali - there's loads there. Hope this assists.

          No probelm at all - appreciate the kind words, I can assure you is very normal to feel it's a tad awkward. Prep is key, I do after showering as hair folicles softened, build lather slowly, adding water, stretch/pull your skin, take short strokes with razor, never on unlathered skin, listen to your skin i.e don't do too much etc. Just takes a lil time & skill, credit to cart razors they're very forgiving and easy to use. But I have zero doubt you will find huge improvements in first dozen shaves. Is a reason folks are so into them despite them being a tech from ~100yrs ago & 'superceded' many times.       I have two razors, a Wilkinson sword "edger" and one I can't recall the brand of that I keep at my partner's. The one at my partner's is far shorter on the handle and took more time to learn, but after adjusting to it I'm just as competant with either, it just takes practice, and learning where your hairline changes directions.
