Equivalent product is $4 at Coles

    • +3

Coles one is only 2 doses.

Sunbeam one is only 1 capful per dose.

      • +2

The Sunbeam stuff is literally citric acid. Coles one doesn't say, but you don't need to use half if regularly descaling.

        • +1

Coles one is likely very diluted…

That's just what Coles would do to save $$$….

          • @jv: Just add vinegar eh JV?

            • +2

@Ham Dragon: I don't know who made the better argument. But I will buy 3 of each.

              • @Dealr: That's a lot of descaling…

TBH I find the output tastes better about halfway during the cycle. Too clean and it's a bit off (and we run 3-4 double shots through after each descale before drinking one), too scaled and it just doesn't seem as strong or robust.

    • +1

Product that does the same thing (and more) is actually $1.70 at Coles.

      • +2

Came here to say this. Have always used vinegar. My last coffee machine lasted 12 years so pretty sure it works just as well, if not better.

    Liquid Descaler 250ml

Can you use this on fish ?

    • +1

This is brilliant. Have an upvote

    • No, it only descales liquids.

      • +3

But a fish is about 80 percent water

        • +4

Ice is 100% water but not a liquid. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • +3

how is this better than vinegar?

    • +4

Dunno. White vinegar works a treat.

    • -5

You cannot descale an espresso machine with vinegar. The way these natural acids and descaling solution react with the scale and bacteria in your machine is not the same. Descaling solution is formulated to remove only the limescale, and not damage your espresso machine's working parts.

            I don't make mistakes.

        • Too good

I have a kettle not an espresso coffee machine…

      • Can I get an OzBargainer's consensus on this?

I use vinegar but, of course, can't be sure either way if it is ok/works.

      • I'll just add a lemon to the vinegar

  • +1

can this be used on breville duo boiler?

    • We use it on our BES870, does the job just fine.

    • +1

Stainless steel boiler, so yes it will be fine. On something with softer material, like an aluminium Gaggia boiler, then definitely no.

      • what about those nespresso capsule coffee machines?

  • If cleaning a kettle, just use white vinegar, does an excellent job.

    • That left a sour taste in my mouth…

      • +1

If you bite a lemon before hand it's not as bad

        • lick some salt first.

  • I use Milton Antibacterial Concentrated Solution, it works very well.

    • Check the ingredients, you may want to be extra thorough when rinsing out. Milton tablets contain cyanide, it's likely the solution does as well.

      • The liquid one works better than the tablets.

  • These smell horrid, need to run water a bunch of times to get rid of the smell. So keep that in mind.

  • Anyone know how many ml of water for 1 capful?

In the instructions it's for the resevour for the sunbeam machine

    • Back of the bottle is pretty vague and says one cap in a kettle or percolator, so probably 1-2 litres. Should get at least 20 descales from a bottle

      • If that is true, then

        $5 - 20 descales = 0.25 per clean
        $24 for 100 tablets - 0.24 per clean - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0778JNHQC/

Seems tablet is cheaper, esp since they drop half price every now and then, which works out at 12c per clean

        • +3

cleaning is not the same as descaling

  • Gotta ask… Do folks here appreciate the difference between citric and acetic acid at all?

  • +2

Just get the food grade of citric acid from Amazon for $4, which can descale anything from kettle to coffee machine. This will last few years.

    https://amzn.asia/d/0bvXh0z7

    • Bingo!

    • How much of it to use for a coffee machine?

      • 1-2 teaspoon per litre of water, whatever you feel like.

    • -1

Looked interesting, but one bad review - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/customer-reviews/R1ALN7F9PKBY0H… and also made in china

      • 4.6 overall rating with 1 bad review and ‘made in China’ - What’s the point you making here?

      • +2

Do you think the citric acid ingredient used in the Sunbeam one is made in Australia? I highly doubt it.

  • Would this work on baby bottle steriliser? Any other rec?

    • It will work, but I would use pure citric acid for that. This one has "other non-hazardous ingredients" in it.

  • can this be used on La Specialista Arte?

  • Dam my gaggia descaler is like $50 a bottle and has 2 doses.

    This ones way cheaper

Used a lemon off the tree for this last week. Squeeze the juice into a jug, add 1/2 litre water, add to kettle. Boil it once, then boil again 15 min later. Pour it out and rinse thoroughly so you don't get flakes in your tea. Works perfectly well, all natural, no rocket science whatsoever.

    • And it adds a wonderful hinto of lemon into your water :)

  • +1

Lemon cut in half squeeze them, fill it up boil it twice and leave it to sit overnight. Job done, he’ll be amazed

    • I do this too !

  • Just use citric acid or vinegar

  • It is now $8

  • $1 bottle of lemon juice will give you multiple descalings, in my experience works better than vinegar and better than dealing with any pulp from the lemon off the tree

Since it’s expired, likely no one is going to read this, but I’ve been using this to declaw my coffee machine and kettle for something like ten years.

It keeps.my Sunbeam Quiet Kettle “quiet” and along with the water filter cartridge, it keeps my Sunbeam Manual Esoresso Machine (group head, ground coffee, dual thermo block, with steaming wand) nice and descaled.

I agree this probably just citric acid, but you only need a capful every 8-12 weeks, as I have a Puretec Puremix X7 under tap water filter, that helps the keep all the cold water free of most crud.

Takes me at least a year to go through a bottle or sometimes longer, but I used to pay $8 from TGG, but recently $5 from Amazon.

Looks like I missed the deal yesterday but it usually comes up maybe 2-3 times a year.

Yes Vingear will work if you want to leave it in your kettle overnight, but this stuff is one capful for my kettle and one capful for my espresso machine, that I just run on hot water to get it into the thermo-block and leave it for 10-15 minutes and then run a bit more through until I’ve run it through both the group head and hot water filter. Simple instructions on the side of the bottle tell you anything you need to know.

This is relatively quick and no mess, where as vinegar or similar would take hours to get same or lesser result. 40 minutes on the kettle where I just let it sit, and a bit more work to flush it through the espresso machine. Recommended every 8 weeks if you have hard or highly mineralised water. 12 weeks or even 16 weeks on filtered water. Full rinse of everything with plain water when you’ve done. Just a cheap and easy way to keep everything descaled

Highly recommended, especially at the $5 price.

    • This comment was really helpful. I just wanted you to know that beyond the upvote :)
I've tried a few different ways to descale my BDB, but what you've described makes sense and seems clean and simple. Just mix it with water, get it into the boiler, let it sit there for a bit and then purge it through the group head and steam wand.

I presume the keeping the boiler on doesn't make a difference?
