Bypassing Qantas FF Fee from Bank Credit Card

Hi all,
I've shamefully been paying $50 annually for Westpac Altitude Qantas FF rewards program (https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/rew…).
I also understand that u can get free Qantas FF rewards via the Qantas app.

Is there a way to be on the credit card and NOT pay the $50 westpac qantas ff fee?

If you want the Qantas points you need to pay the fee. Otherwise have a look at other credit cards such as Amex, Qantas Money, ANZ, etc.

      referring to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/806554
or am i misunderstanding that deal? I assumed you can get free Qantas membership with that, which helps you earn points

That’s for joining the Qantas FF program (it is a one off fee) you need to join to get a QFF number to attach to your Westpac account. The fee on your credit card you’re referring to is different and is being charged by Westpac essentially for the privilege of being able to earn Qantas points for every $1 you spend on your card.

OP that post is unrelated and tbh anyone paying for a QFF membership is getting shafted, it has and always will be free.

This is an imposed fee that the bank passes on for allowing you to earn FF points

        • Join fee for Qantas FF program is currently $99.50 as per their website - https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/discover-and-joi…

It's always had a fee to join, but over the years numerous programs have come up which provide free membership.

          • @miwahni: Its only had a fee so they can write the costs off as "losses" against tax when they give them out for free.

No sane person would pay to join when there's a plethora of options out there that give you it for free

    You're mixing up services.

    1. Qantas Frequent flyer program - Technically costs $50 to join. Nobody has ever paid this as you can sign up for free through woolworths, the Qantas app etc. Each time you fly qantas, you generate points, status credits etc. You are probably a bronze member.
    2. Qantas Rewards = A credit card, service, purchase that generates Frequent Flyer points for every $1 you spend.

You are paying $50 to Westpac to have a credit card, (#2) and every $1 you spend, points are sent to your frequent flyer account (#1)

    • I thought it 'cost' $89 or $99 to join QFF

      • eh, maybe it does.

        nobody ever pays that.

  • The fee is charged by Westpac to send points to QFF, it's not the QFF membership fee. What's more shameful is keeping one card >12 months instead of churning cards for signup points like the professionals do.

    • Surely it just look suspicious when trying to get a mortgage and you have 8 credit card checks in the last 2 years

My credit score is 900+ churning 4-5 cards per year, never had a problem. Big difference between having multiple credit cards paid off in full every month, vs someone in arrears on their foxtel, vape and bogan ute loan.

      • they just care what you have at the moment to calculate how much total you can borrow across all your CCs+loan

      • People regularly post on here complaining about getting rejected from CC companies.

I don't see many posts on here for people getting rejected from Mortgage companies due to too many CC applications. I'm not saying it isn't a thing at all but in my humble opinion, people overstate the impact on mortgage applications as a result of doing a few churns here and there.

8 would probably be excessive though. 2-3 a year is fine.
