Thanks again for some handy ones, like the Decluttering - Getting rid of the mess.

I’m working my way through the house with a professional. They aren’t cheap, but after five months we’ve barely done half the house - but the amount of things I have been able to sell or dispose of, mostly from the garage and there will be a shredding day where I decide what paperwork I kept from various jobs (too much contracting) over the years.

Having said that I’ve also unfortunately spent $35 buying USB-C cables which I already had but they were thrown into the bottom of a box and despite spending hours, it was cheaper and less stressful to buy replacements.

Ultimately there will be a system at the end, but I’ve found a few hundred dollars with of items, some brand new that I bought with the intention of using and never did. Thanks ALDI!! I get my mother to post them on FB and sometimes on eBay depending on what they are. EBay commissions can be high and Buy, Swap can sometimes be a bit painful, but 90% sells on the spot. Still, ppl will always try to talk you way under the value of the item, they knew how much it was listed for. I’ve had to take a haircut on a few things, but generally we always build in negotiation price. The worst is when someone arranges an appointment and never turn up, or 45 minutes you are calling them and they say, oh we are on our way (well why didn’t you ring and say you’d be late???)

My Mother is in her 70s and always gets a decent commission.

Re Decluttering - some tips maybe worth noting:

If you ever get a professional declutterer, eg after you move in with someone and the declutterer says things like, “if you have touched it in six months, get rid of it”.

That was some if the worst advice my ex-wife ever took, making me get rid of my second sets of cutlery and a box of style of plate/crockery. That stuff doesn’t last forever and if you are forward thinking enough to get a second set to replace chipped or broken stuff, insist it gets packed away.

For those in apartments I realise storage space is at a premium so something that works for one doesn’t fit for someone else, it’s just it was over 20 years ago and it still gets to me that half the designer crockery 2nd set was forced to be sold and I now have a mix of plates, bowls and cups. same with certain glassware.

I was once told by an old friend, “we don’t own stuff, stuff owns us”, as he was renting bigger and bigger places every time he moved.

So one day he decided to dump his substantial book collection, CDs and lots of highly collectable things like that, reasoning that he could get the ebook version or he can listen to the streaming versions. CDs despite their age are still uncompressed, and if they’ve been stored correctly there is no reason those discs won’t play in another 30-50 years time (providing you can find a player) and yes, I have a brand new VHS machine wrapped up, never opened because while I know the tapes weren’t stored correctly I might still be able to watch them.

It may have occurred to you that I am a bit of a hoarder, of things and data.

CDs, I suppose you can live with FLAC or 320Kbps mp3 versions, but for the same reason that I don’t sell my DVD collection for 50 cents a disc or my Bluray or my more recently UHD-BD (aka 4K Bluray) collection. Except the world seems obsessed with a 30 year old technology DVD, which is Standard Def and MPEG-2 with only the crappest DVD players still on sale (unless you have the money for an audiophile brand), and Bluray isn’t that far behind.

However Disney have already stopped selling video discs in just AU and NZ which is frustrating as shit. There’s no reason for it, unless it’s some twisted way to get you hooked on a Disney+ subscription, so if you don’t have the movie when it was on disc. All I can say is, well whatever money Disney would have earned from me buying a movie, you now get nothing and I’ll still download the film.

Just some random thoughs about freeing up space with the obvious big space consumers. I figure most of my VHS at least in one apartment got well and truly cooked on hot summer days.

Burned CDs and DVDs, depending on the brand of disc, you might be lucky and it still plays, lots of people bought the cheapest discs and many no longer play. I stuck mostly to Ztdk and Verbatim and the discs I’ve tried, still work and some of those burned CDs go back to the 90s and there not much I want to keep, but there is plenty of audio in uncompressed WAV that I was working on at one point and afaik, they are the only uncompressed copy. If the band ever want the masters, well I can at least give them two track uncompressed wave files and possibly the Pro Tools projects, if they left them with me, however most went with the band, I said I’ll back it up for $25 and store it. Any backups have all been kept as best as I could without paying for climate controlled storage, but that would have been a lot more than $25. Only one band has ever come back to me 15 years later. The hardest thing was migrating through older versions of Pro Tools, depend on the year it was recorded.

Ok written too much again. Sorry, just the declutterring I’m have been doing for several months. I’m not looking forward to them going through my computer room / study.

I enjoyed reading that. I also consider myself a bit of an "archivist" or "data hoarder" so can relate. Glad to see your decluttering is going well.

That long stream of consciousness seems a bit cluttered.

Anyway, re the CDs. Laser rot tends to kill old players. And over time the heads on VHS and cassette tape players corrode or misalign.

I am also a data hoarder.
