Camry Has Slight Squeaky Noise in Steering

Hi l have a 20 year old Camry, recently l noticed l sometimes get a slight squeak noise when l turn the steering wheel.

It usually happens when l first drive the car after it has rested, it doesn't happen often and its only one single slight squeak noise then it doesn't happen again.

Should l be worried, could it be the start of something more serious.

  • check power steering fluid check power steering pump check the belts aka take it to a good mechanic

      Agreed
      20 year old car
Some things will start to give
But could be as simple as a belt that needs tightening

Prob would get worse… might be worth to get a look at - and it’s only 20 years old, you got like at least 10 -30 years left in it.

      Probably not enough premium dude

  • just rolled in on youtube found a solution

Ball joints, bushings, power steering pump, steering rack etc etc etc.

It has 350,000kms on it. Have you had any suspension/steering work performed in your ownership?

    • O.P.'s shoulder is on the way out.

    • l had new bushings done a year ago

    • lol I also thought it was the same Camry guy

But OP as indicated above it could be a bunch of different things

Sounds like you need to change the steering wheel oil.

    • +3

Is that near the indicator fluid reservoir?

      • +4

No, its just below the horn oil filter.

That makes sense. No wonder I couldn't find it. Cheers

  • lm getting it serviced in a few weeks , l will tell them to check it then

If you can, leave the car there the night before so they can try to replicate the noise in the morning.

      • +6

        That makes squeaks. Cheers.

    • Yea happened to my car a few months back, brake pads indicator causing the noise for me. New pads needed and now it’s gone

      • Did it make a noise every time you applied the breaks brakes?

        • No, the noise often came during steering

did u previously drive a bmw? thats the sound the sound of the indicator when u turn

    • no its not the indicator

    Is it in the cab?
Possibly just a dry steering shaft bearing.
As long as the steering is still smooth, without clunking, binding or loose spots, it should be fine until you get it serviced.

    • yes no clunking , its still smooth , just occasional single squeak sometimes

Does it only happen when you turn the wheel and floor it? If so that's just the sound of tyres squealing as the mighty 1MZ sends it's power through the front wheels.

Yeah, as others pointed out, it's due to the age of the car. get some teflon spray (best) or 3in1 sillicone spray. then this vid should help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGriUALt3-4

Video has an annoying one lol…….. /. headphone warning

That's just the mice inside your car telling you it's time for an upgrade as you're disturbing their new home.

You’ve most likely run over a dogs squeaky toy and it’s stuck

    CV Joints

  • Still so many questions for a crystal ball diagnosis.

The most simple solution, let a mechanic listen to it.

A minute of his/her time will not cost you anything…. and let's face it… Steering Faults can KILL.

Get it checked, and not in here for crying out loud!

    • yes l am getting it checked in 2 weeks

Does it make more noise if you turn the steering lock to lock?

Try tighten the belt tensioner of steering assist pump, if it solves your problem then happy day. If belt is fray or crack time for new belt.

Turn the radio up, you'll never hear it. Traded my last Camry in for a Mazda. Literally had to limp it there and coast it down the hill. Salesman said at 480,000klm it was gently warn in.

If steak doesn't go away try WD4O

  • Just to add, l noticed the squeak only happens when l turn the steering wheel to the right and it usually happens after l first start the car after it has rested for a while, its just one slight squeak and it usually doesnt happen the rest of the day, maybe only once a day, not often

  • Have you considered a new car?
