[Pre Order] Sennheiser HD 600 Open Back Headphones $369 Delivered @ Addicted To Audio

132

This is on PRE-ORDER as of now

Not the cheapest it had been in the past.
From what I heard in the past, this needs an amp to drive to get the best out of it.

This product is available to pre-order with an ETA of early August.

  • Definitely needs a decent amp

    • I found an apple dongle at 15-25% was more than enough to run a hd600 and be audibly transparent, and I own an ifi gryphon and topping stack.

Would not consider these to be hard to drive.

      • Hard disagree. It will be "fine" with an Apple dongle, but not anywhere where it could be.

        • I have run focal utopia and clear off an apple dongle as well.

Audibly and measurably indistinguishable from my ifi gryphon + topping stack, I own a coupler for measurement too.

None of these headphones are anywhere near "hard to drive" or have the crest factor required for 1Vrms+ headroom, you can go look at the sensitivity specs yourself and do the calculations.

@HPdeskjet: Yeah I had a huge research into amps and power when I set up my system (Audeze LCD X + SMSL VMV D1SE + Topping D90). It is surprisingly complicated, even with a background in electrical engineering. Definitely not easy to "just do the calculations".

I'll see if I can dig some of that up if I have time later.

However if you say you measured with a coupler and no difference (not sure how "audible difference" is discerned here) than that's amazing. (BTW I have the apple dongle and use it, just didn't think it will supply enough power)

            • @AncientWisdom: Hey, a fellow EE!

The raw equations are a bit complex, but you can find some nice guides that walk you through that make it a lot easier.

For the HD600, you need a bit less than 1Vrms to account for peaks and clipping.

              https://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/09/more-power.html?m=1

In terms of the measurements, I own a IEC711 clone coupler and KB501X artificial pinna.

I consider audibly identical to be when the frequency response is exactly that same when measured with two different sources.

I have some sources (R2R ladder / Tube) that alter the frequency response too, and those measure Audibly differently.

To see if a source has any effect on the sound profile, you can also view measurements people have done with ADCs (linearity), L7audiolab and ASR have a pretty large libary.

              https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/r…

              Something like my Cayin RU6 noticeably rolls off treble and fails linearity, which sounds "warm" to people and is a perfectly valid preference;

              https://archimago.blogspot.com/2022/01/review-measurements-c…

But an apple dongle and RME-ADI2 (and every other source that has perfect linearity / sounds "transparent" / flat) sounds esentially identical given it can actually power the headphone.

If it's something like a HE6se or actually difficult to drive headphone that can be driven to audible levels but will clip, that's a different matter, the more expensive dac/amp setup will sound better.

But, a HD600 can hit ~107dB on an apple dongle @ 1V, which will give you nearly instant permanent hearing damage, and is hence more than enough headroom to sound transparent.

That's why I don't consider them to be "hard to drive", they will only have issues with 0.5v sources like phone and laptop 3.5mm jacks.

              • @HPdeskjet: Nice to see an NWAVGUY link 🙂

I'm not a practicing EE btw, just have background (uni) in it.

That's a lot of information, thanks.

What I found while researching is that it's not enough to get a certain volume at a given output voltage, it may be that the headphones still won't perform to the fullest even when getting loud enough. Like I said when I get a minute I'll try and find some of that background research.

I use an apple dongle myself and agree it's a transparent source, just talking power here.

                • @AncientWisdom: Yes, that's accurate. You can calculate how much headroom a headphone requires on top of average volume using crest factor.

In this case for the HD600/HD650 specifically, the Apple dongle actually does has enough headroom to avoid clipping, since it can do 1Vrms output.

Calculations can be found in the NWAVGUY page, 1V output is enough to reach ~107dB peak, which has headroom for ~90dB listening while avoiding power clipping (for reference I listen at 70dB), so the apple dongle actually does have enough power.

For something that requires a bit more power like the hifiman planars etc, an apple dongle would have enough volume at peak to achieve listening volume, but NOT enough power headroom to avoid clipping.

In that case you would actually benefit from a better source. I'm not saying that higher end sources don't make sense, just that they don't make sense for the HD600.

Good deal for the Huh-duh six-hunjos from old mate Senny!

  • I upgrade to the HD800 from these. HD600s are great and I much preferred them to the HD650.

There are the drop.com HD6xx which are known to basically be HD650 headphones. Just want to put this here as a reminder.

    • -2

I believe the difference is those are made in China.

      • +2

Nope, the drivers are assembled in the same sets of EU-based factories, however I can't speak to where the enclosure and headband - the only real points of difference - are made.

The only clear difference due to the enclosure change sees the engineering tolerance slide out from 1% to 2%. If you want the 650, which remains the best choice for vocal and piano timbre - the trickiest kinds to execute - without going to silly prices, just buy the 6XX.

  • It's been this price on Amazon for the last several days. Only 1 left in stock as of writing though.

  • Just can’t get over the dual wire. So impractical and much more annoying than you’d think.

    • These cans are hard to drive, so at least you can run balanced with dual wires. I do with my HD650s.

Something like this good enough to get the most out of these/6XX?? on an entry level budget.

Just a friendly reminder that addicted to audio won't honour any warranty and you'll have to do a credit card chargeback or file a case with consumer affairs australia to get your money back. Last refunds of mine took 9 months because they kept lying saying the product wasn't faulty while they kept emailing me persistently trying to trick me to say the product wasn't faulty so they could use that as evidence lmao.

Same experience, with expensive gear too. Will never recommend them again to anyone. I hate their policy, and the ACCC needs to look into them the same way they did with MSY years back and forced MSY to change their ways.

Nothing against the people that work there, they're usually lovely people.
