Whole Lamb Spit Roast, Bargain Suggestions?

Any recommendations on how to do a whole lamb spit roast, without paying through the roof, without any equipment to start with?

  • What are the essentials for hire?
  • Buy a roaster second-hand and on-sell?
  • I assume spring time is better for lamb pricing?
  • Any recipe/other tips?

Sydney based, and I am not into poaching.

    • More expensive in NZ.

    • Yeah that post was what got me asking in advance, since that deal didnt strike me as being much of a bargain, although in hindsight, all the processing and prepping has been done (compared to an unbutchered) which is a decent amount of work.

      So Op has NO IDEA
      And also wants a bargain?

Great way to end up with a terrible Spit Roast

      Maybe ask around.
A freind might have the equipment and hence the know-how

      • Pretty much. Hoping it wont be terrible, but won't rush into it. Hey, just because bargain doesn't mean terrible, you've been around almost as long as I have here.

The jumbuck spit from Bunnings. There's a FB group full of diehard fans, lots of Greek members, you'll find all the info you need there. It's called 'Bunnings $85 Jumbuck Mini Spit Society'.

Will have to be a very young lamb to fit on that!

      • Actually yeah probably overestimated the size of them. I'm using a Weber roti.

    Grow your own…

    • I've done the research on the processing part, full-on, reasonably. Have only processed birds before.

There are butchers who hire spits, they'll help you with everything

    • OK, might go around and get some quotes.

      • If you want to go cheap DIY a common method is to cut a 44-gallon drum and motorise a stainless steel rod with a wiper motor. I'd love to do a suckling pig… one day.

    without paying through the roof

Most places accept card these days

    • Better to pay via entering through the door.

Paying through the roof can often be dangerous…

  • If you intend to make this a yearly habit, then its much cheaper to buy the necessary equipment.

For a medium lamb its usually $200-250, the only recipe you really need is for the basting, it depends on what kind of basting you want.
Usually Mediterranean keeps the lamb moist and adds alot of flavor.

    • Probably not a yearly habit, currently thinking a one-off, so hard to know whether to invest.

      Thanks for the recipe thoughts

      • My family do a spit annually, at first they rented out the equipment, but it costs about the same as buying it in 2-3 years anyway.

The 2nd hand market is non existent.
