  • Thanks. Great deal. Got some

  • Is this a nice wine? Or discounted to get rid of

    • +2

I had 2010 and 2014. Both were excellent with 2010 definitely made by Peter Douglas of Wynns 90s fame and would have been a preferred choice.
My jury is still out on 2016. Good vintage year but no idea who actually made it. But at $35 a bottle probably worth a punt

      • 2010 and 2014 were great deals for $40-50. 2016 for $35 is worth a punt.

    • -1

Probably both. Hightly likely it's passed its peak.

  • +2

btw this is one is often discounted on those mystery bottles wine sites.

  • +1

Its a good deal at just over $35/bottle but RRP $150/bottle. Really?

    • $35 for a decent Coonawarra cab Sauv is what sold me

Reschke dump all their wine at a "heavily discounted" price across all the standard sites - Vinomofo, The Wine Collective, Wine Star, Dan Murphys etc (normally as a hidden label). Their wines are generally over oaked and definitely not worth their inflated RRP.

    • Thought that might be the case. It's like nobody ever pays RRP for Seiko or Citizen watches lol

    • +1

      Very typical for CW Wines

    • +1

It’s actually not Reschke dumping but CW Wines who bought the brand. And milking it for all it’s worth.

      • Well I guess they do the same with their other brands - Stonehaven, Schild and Ulithorne, so why not do the same with Reschke. Basically kills all brand integry and value.

        • +1

If they are selling the wine that they inherited as the result of buying these brands that was made by these brands, it is well worth getting it. However I suspect CW is actually making new vintages of these brands and god knows who makes it etc

@olympicwiz: I had the 2014 that i purchased as a "mystery wine" from VM.

Honestly not that impressed. I preferred the 2012 RSR. For a ~$35 wine its decent though. If you told me that you paid $150 for it, I would have said you got ripped off.

            • @PCHammond: I think RSR 2012 was still made by original Reschke. Normally it should have been only offered to the members of Reschke wine club.

          • @olympicwiz: Just saw a 2024 Reschke Pinot Gris….

Yes, the brand was originally started by Burke Reschke many years ago. Sadly it was sold to CW Wines who along with some other brands like Ulithorne do tend to specialise in the High RRP discounted back model.

      • It's so disappointing because the brand has been ruined. I am very doubtful that the Empyrean is made in the same way it used to be. For a flagship cab sav, it was really very mediocre.

For a similar price, I'd much rather get a Reynella cab sav from CellarOne. I really enjoy it and it's usually in the low 30s. The Empyrean is nice to take to friends houses though

          @PCHammond
I met Burke a few times, most memorably hanging out with him at Vinitaly in Verona. Fair to say he was a passionate bloke who made big wines that needed some cellaring prior to release but that were made for longevity. I've lost touch with the wines in recent years though do remember having a Reschke Cabernet at the Adelaide 500 last year and enjoying it - not sure which or what vintage, though it did have a little bottle age…. :-)

Sold out…to people who think the claimed RRP means something

    • -3

      It's 150 a bottle across multiple sites

  • +1

I agree with everyone's comments around CW's business model, however this is a great drop and at $35 is a good deal in my books. I also wouldn't pay any attention to the RRP, I'd personally happily pay up to $40 a bottle for the empyrean

    • +1

Let us know what 2016 Empyrean is like. As there are hardly any tasting notes

Had my first one the other night. Was fairly unimpressed to start with but when I finished the bottle off the next night it had really opened up and was great.
Make sure you aerate and decant for over an hour to enjoy this.
