Choosable 50 Extras Cover (with up to 2 No Gap Dental Check‑Ups) from $12.95 Per Month @ ahm

190
EXTRAS8WF

Popular deal last year and just a slight price increase now with additional benefits. Description shamelessly copied from the previous post, full credit and thanks to AT1013:

I think this is a deal and not sure if people are aware of this one.

It is a dental cover only and it's 50% extra cover meaning you get 50% back up to the annual limit which is annual bundle limit of $500 (across routine + complex + major dental).

The deal part is that you can get no gap dental check-ups at selected dentist "to offer you up to 2 dental check-ups per financial year with no out of pocket costs (up to your annual limit).

Use this link to find the participating no gap dentist.

No gap check up means
- Periodic and comprehensive examination (012 & 011)
- Clean and polish OR Scale and clean (111 & 114)
- Fluoride Treatment (121)

X-rays, Tooth extractions, Fillings and other stuff would be at 50% back up to the annual limit.

Assuming, a standard checkup with dentist/hygienist is around $200 (correct me if I'm wrong). Then you can essentially get 2 check ups + clean per year (worth $400) from $155.6 per year for a single person, plus cover for complex and major dental should you need it.

This would be a good deal for someone that just wants/needs dental care, and pretty cheap to get the basic dental care you need. It's 6 weeks free after your first 60 days, and another 2 weeks free after your first 365 days if you get it before 30 June 2024 using code EXTRAS8WF

Also you get ambulance cover (exclude Tasmania and Queensland which have State schemes) as well which is a bonus.

Side note that my dentist is not charging the gap although they are not in the list, so be nice and talk with yours :)

Moreover they have extras limit rollover so you'll get double your limit from 1 July 2024

And $100 cashback if you remain a member until 30 September 2024.

So if my math is correct, when you take the single cover your out of pocket will be
July: $12.95
August: $12.95
September: $0 (coupon code) + $100 cashback = $71.1 profit??

Hope this helps someone :)

  • How much is the hospital cover with AHM OP?

    • I'm not looking into hospital cover in details as it varies. They have different offers 6 weeks free for hospital or up to 12 weeks free for combined cover

    • I have hospital and dental basic @ $21.80 a week. That's single person.

    • Slightly cheaper than Medibank ($42.74 vs $41.50 fortnightly for the 2nd cheapest bronze, which is where I think the optimum value is).

But if you get combined cover (hospital + extras) then Medibank is better because you get an extra $200-250 (approx) in reward points. Both ahm and Medibank have a 12 week free over 13 month offer, which sounds good until you realise the whole point is to shaft you over by locking you into the plan until after the EOFY deals next year.

i have no idea how these Health Insurances and Extras work and what is no gap and bla bla all that stuff. tried to look up on google, still couldn't understand half of the stuff and how these affect after you get 30 years old and on Tax as well.

    • +7

      Two separate products.

The main one is Private Health Insurance (PHI), this covers hospital visits, surgeries and other medical procedures that can / can't be covered by Medicare (in the instance it can, the difference can be the waiting times in public vs private hospitals and others). PHI has an age loading, which increases every year by 2% after 30, for each year you don't have the hospital cover. This is also the insurance policy you take out to avoid being charged a Medicare Levy Surchage at tax time, IF you earn above $90K for singles ($180K for couples).

Extras, like the name suggests, are extra benefits you can purchase and usually cover dental visits, physiotherapy, chiropractors, optometrists, massages and some others, but these are the main ones. Purchasing an Extras policy does not affect your tax, nor does it increase after the age of 30. Extras will usually cover 50-60% of the costs of a dental/optom/physio visit, up to a certain annual limit. Some companies only provide a fixed $ amount, but generally speaking they're around the 50-60% cost range.

A no-gap means essentially, you do not have to pay anything out of pocket when you visit the dentist. Health insurance companies partner with certain clinics to provide no-gap service ie Bupa partners with Bupa Dental.

      • thanx for the explanation, i turned 30 last year in Dec. and i earn around 60k, can i please knoe how its gonna work for me ?? should i get now or not ???
Edit: i meant the PHI not just the extras only and which one is the best right now with alll EOFY sales ??

        • My recommendation is to get some sort of extras only with the code EXTRAS8WF and cancel around October of this year.

Then you can sign up the next EOFY on/before June 30th 2025 with Hospital Cover + Extras (Lifetime loading only starts on July 1st following your 31st birthday), if you feel that Hospital Cover is necessary for you. Certainly at 60k from a tax perspective there's no benefit to Hospital Cover at the moment.

A lot of it depends on if you have 93k+ in income a year.

If you do have 93k+, then getting at least hospital cover is a no brainer since the very basic (junk) plans will cost you less than the Medicare Levy Surcharge over a year. If you are 31 years of age, then continuous cover becomes important to avoid lifetime loading, which is basically a tax on your insurance that increases the more years you go without insurance (and if you break continuity you start again from [yourAge - 30] x 2% tax for the next 10 years).

Extras is easy enough to game if you are under 30 - sign up during EOFY or other discount periods so you can skip the 2 and 6 month waiting periods, claim your fill of dental (50%-100% back) and optical (100% back), then cancel in 2 weeks. You'll pay around $25-30 for those 2 weeks, in exchange for maybe $350 in medical services.

      • If you can I'd rather fund Medicare extra levy than private health insurance

  • My Medibank Healthy Start Extras includes 2 free dental check-ups per year as well.

    • +1

Yes, same company. Medibank is slightly more expensive though and with less perks as of today

      • +2

And equal chances of your data being shared due to poor internal security.

  • Anyone know if both AHM and Medibank exclude each other from future promos/ swaps for 12 months?

Ie. I'm pretty sure Joining Medibank excludes you from taking up any AHM promo offer (as well as Medibank) for 12 months.

Not sure if it works the other way as well.

    • I want to know this too.

      • Looks like only 60 days. So you can't go directly from Medibank to AHM (or vice versa) and get the promo. You would need to wait 60 days. Can still join, just not eligible for the promo.

  • has anyone tried doing compare the market for health insurance through topcashback?? They seem to be providing $210 cashback for hospital cover, isn't that better than going directly to the website??

    • +1

I did, this cover is not offered in Compare the Market

      • thats true, certain offers aren't allowed if you go through aggregators. even the 6 weeks free offer that AHM has isn't there if you go through compare the market.

if you wan't just basic hospital cover do avoid the MLS then Topcashback seems to be the way to go better than 6 weeks free

  • so if i just wanted dental care, ie to get some teeth fixed up that might cost a few grand, should i get some kinda cover or just pay it outright? I have no idea.. ?

    • +1

12 months waiting period for major dental. If you can wait, with the coupon code and cashback your out of pocket is ~$38 to get $1000 worth of cover next year

      • thanks so much for replying.

yeah i can wait, i might need some braces or something, so is that what ppl do, they get private and wait and do that? i have no idea how ppl afford dental in aus…

        • +1

Just a heads-up: this plan doesn’t include orthodontics. You’ll need to sign up for the Choosable 60 plan for that coverage. The good news is, after completing the 12-months waiting period, you can switch to a different provider next year (if better) and your 12-months wait will still be recognised

        • +1

I think ahm is one of the cheapest insurers to get access to orthodontic claims.

          Extras Plan (annual limit/lifetime limit)
          chooseable extras 60 ($800/$1800)
          lifestyle extras ($600/$1800)
          family extras ($700/$2200)
          super extras ($900/$2900)

Normally you have to wait 3 years in order to claim the lifetime limit, but if you sign up today and schedule your braces installation for June 28th-30th 2025 exactly then you can claim that amount in only 53 weeks due to the ahm limit rollover offer (even works for categories in a waiting period).

          • @tekisei: Thanks, i really appreciate the info. I have recently been thinking as a middle-aged man im finally able to afford / might want to have my teeth fixed up. I dont know if i'll need braces but it's possible. I think i might sign up for this choosable extras 60 then cos this could be of help to me, and i was gonna get my teeth done anyways. Can definitely wait 2 months for the checkups / etc and 53 weeks for anything major. Thanks!

            • +1

@Iggemo: Yeah welcome to the post-teen braces journey, its suprisingly not expensive (vs a teenager) but also surprisingly expensive at the same time.

To clarify on the waiting times for orthodontics, its 12 months from day of sign up, which will leave you with 3 days before June 30th 2025 to get braces done/to pay off your braces to the 2x annual limit. After July 1st 2025 you can claim another 1x annual limit. If you don't do orthodontics (or at least, don't do a prepayment for orthodontics) before June 30th 2025, then the 2x annual limit for FY24-25 will expire.

Major/complex dental is also a 12 month wait. Keep in mind that for choosable extras 60, all the dental is bundled together in one annual limit, so the more you use for routine dental (apart from your free 2 x checkups) the more you will reduce the limit available for orthodontics/major/complex.

              • @tekisei: Just signed up to the plan today.

Does that mean the payment for braces would have to be on 30th June 2025?

Cutting it close if so and will be tricky to time it all correctly.

Can I get the process started now and get orthodontics and pay a portion out of pocket and then have any remainder charged to heslth insurance on the 30th June 2025? Provided the clinic allows this of course.

                • @wrekt: From my understanding, you are correct. I'm a few months into my treatment and my orthodontist divided the total cost of the treatment across the expected amount of months of treatment. Their office automatically charges my card once a month. June 30th 2025 is a Monday, so I guess it should be possible to ask them to arrange an amount to be deducted on that particular day.

*You would be subject to annual limits x 2 of course, on that day.

  • when do i have to sign up to get the cashback? before or after july 1?

    • +1

You can get the cashback if you sign up before 30 Sep but the benefit of signing up before July is so that you'll get your unused limit rolled over to the next financial year. Essentially double your limit

      • Wouldn't the code void cashback?

        • Cashback is from AHM promo, not the click through cashback

          • @djprima: ahh yeah got ya….so weird that anyhting other than Shopback/Cashrewards can also be cashback.

  • Black 50 Saver Extras is $1.20 more expensive a month, trading $100 of dental limit (down to $400) to get $300 of physio/chiro limit, if you need it.

  • +2

Bupa also offer you 2 dental check-ups per financial year with no out of pocket costs but does not come out of your annual limit.

    • +1

Kind of comes down to if you reckon you'll need x-rays or work done beyond a general clean. You'd hit your limit pretty fast with ahm, but the cashback and 6 weeks free makes it a bargain. If you need extractions/fillings you'd save more in the long run through Bupa

      • +1

Just be with AHM from July to December and then switch to Bupa in January when their extras reset and you'll have no issues.

    • Great tip – thank you! Comparing private health insurance is so difficult because it seems none of the comparison sites (including PrivateHealth.gov.au) disclose complimentary dental benefits.

  • Cheers just signed up to a an additional extras policy to claim $200 optical (30/6) and another optical $200 tomorrow. Also to roll over health management ($500 in total) so I can pay my gym membership for next 18 months.
Also $75 CTM TCB tracked and should also get the ahm $100 cashback and 6 weeks free.

Paid $57 per month to AHM

    • Hey nice last minute decision! Too bad this one is not offered in CTM
