    • Oh wow. Have all Surface Pro tablets switched to Snapdragon/ARM? I thought they have always run on Intel.

Yeah, they had actually used both for a bit but now fully on the ARM train and they are up there with the Mac performance. Massive improvements to battery life which is nice, the new Surface laptops are genuine competitors to the MacBook. This year is the first year for the big ARM push for Microsoft and their partners so should get spicy.

I agree. The only thing holding me back is I'm not convinced by the x86-64 emulation for programs untill i see proof from a non sponsored user.

          • @Wizard: There are plenty of them around on youtube from big name channels that aren't sponsored (though I understand it's always hard to tell who is actually not in someones pocket). They all basically show in benchmarks that it's about a 10-15% performance hit when emulating, which is quite frankly amazing.

            • @MrFunSocks: Thats good to hear.

              • @Wizard: The main exceptions, however, are ones that require specific drivers. Many of those simply will not run as those drivers aren't emulated. Hopefully they come up with a solution for that soon.

Having said all that, and I know it sounds silly, but I am also still hesitant because of it like you haha. I can't easily think of every single existing program I'll ever want to use on it, and the last thing I want is to spend almost $3k on one only to find out 3 months down the track that it literally cannot run a program that I want/need.

I thought they were still putting out an intel version?

    • +2

Not necessarily (the better bit), app compatibility and performance is still a bit of an unknown once major platforms create ARM versions.

No deal sorry, grab a Surface 10 Pro for $100 cheaper.

    Also,

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/microsoft-surface-pro-9-1…

The 256GB version is $1888. Same ram/cpu in both. The Surface Pros have had upgradable storage since the 7+. You can pick up a 1TB (or 2TB) m.2 ssd for much less than the ~$300 price difference between the two.

    • Idk why you got negged, a 1TB 2230 SSD from a reputable brand is only $130, so indeed what you said is of better value than what OP posted.

This is obsolete and way overpriced. The new Snapdragon versions performance is much better (have used both). I would not even get the SP9 for half this price

Obsolete is a bit strong a word. Still plenty of programs out there not ready for ARM yet.

      • It has a 2 generations old CPU and is more expensive than the latest model. How is that not obsolete? You can buy the surface pro 10 if you want intel. The SP9 also runs like shit compared to the snapdragon version based on my direct experience

        • Are you able to link me to the cheaper current gen intel device? The closest I can see for these specs is $1000 more.

@ONEMariachi: I meant that the sp11 is cheaper than the spot, the newer Intel version is probably more expensive. Do you really need Intel though? The snapdragon devices perform much better than Intel and the x86 compatibility is pretty good for most mainstream apps

@qvinto: There are many many programs that do not work on arm. Personally I have 3 within my direct work flow but there is a list of about 40 odd common programs being maintained on reddit atm that do not work yet. Especially if there are older ones people use. In my case it is research based.

You need to step outside of your own shoes a bit and realise the entire world doesn’t revolve around your personal experience and needs.

              • @ONEMariachi: I've been using an arm Mac for the last 3 years with windows on arm through parallels. Have not come across software which doesn't work and i tried a bunch of engineering software like Solidworks, Ansys etc.

  • I'm looking to get a Surface Pro 11th (ARM) - given the price difference of the 512GB vs 1TB models, I'm planning to self-upgrade the SSD.

I checked the service guide and seem to think the SSD is replaceable, but… you need some sort of a tool to create the installation media? Does anyone know how it's to be done?

  • Considering the 11th SP copilot, snapdragon plus vs elite hrmmmm 🤔
