Emma Sleep Australia Alleged Misrepresentations about Prices

Hi all, just thought I'd alert all OzBargainers to purchase Emma Sleep products or mattresses with caution.

Here is my story:

I was in the market for a new mattress and choice.com reviewed Emma quite highly in previous years so I went on to their website and asked their live chat for some recommendations. They recommended a mattress to me which was 90% off, initially around $1.2k which came down to $121 with free delivery. 100 days sleep guarantee so I pulled the trigger thinking it's a no-brainer.

It was too good to be true and I was shocked. I had to double check and ask them again why it was 90% off and the sales agent assured me that it was just part of their MEGA sale and nothing dodgy going on.
Placed an order, took my money, got an email saying order is being processed. I was excited, so was my lower back.

Next day, an email arrives saying, it was a glitch in the system and my money will be refunded and gave me a small little coupon to use on my next order. I did some digging and Choice.com no longer reviews them as they have an ACCC case going for these reasons.

If I go online now for a live chat, once they find out I'm not buying anything and on their case, they will end the live chat.

I would highly suggest OzBargainers to stay away from this questionable business. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. On that note, does anyone have mattress recommendations? Just want to sleep a little better over here. I didn't have a lot of expectations and had the feeling it would get cancelled anyway but my curiosity led to googling a bit more and found out they're not a good company so I thought I'd post here to warn some people.

P.S: I have a 50% off coupon on top of their current sales for my troubles so if anyone wants a cheap mattress from a somewhat questionable mattress company its EXTRA50EOFY. Enjoy!

UPDATE: My colleague also ordered this at the same time. He just got his mattress this morning but it wont puff up outside the box. It seems like they were offloading end of shelf life mattresses and stopped honouring the sale price once that stock ran out. :)

Worth a try man, doesn't hurt but apparently it will indeed hurt your back according to some haha.

    • Not a problem got the money back didnt they?

And Emma admitted an error and provided a full refund PLUS a discount voucher

What on earth is Op complaining about…..Seriously??????

As jv said…..There's one born every minute…

You believed it? The cover alone would cost more

It was too good to be true

    No shit.

The shipping alone would cost more lol. I'm not mad, wasn't expeciting much but seems like they're doing the same thing on their website again with more believable prices so I thought I'd put up a post here and some might find it helpful.

Like the OP, I'll take my chances.

I've purchased clearance items at 90% off. Could be end of line or factory seconds.

If I don't get the product or it doesn't work as advertised, e.g. mattress won't inflate, then get a refund or CC charge back.

A couple of weeks back, Ikea was clearing out $1600 dishwashers for under $300. over 80% off.. so genuine bargains can be had. Or Mr Clean wipes at Bunnings at $0.50… I still have a number of unopened packets..very handy.

As for recommendation, I purchased a Tempur. It was around $3k from memory, down from $10k which no one ever pays. I must admit, I do like it (not the price). Only downside is it gets hot in summer.

There isn't much better in life than a 90% off deal. Totally worth pursuing, so long as you keep your eyes open.
OP didn't lose anything but a bit of time. Can't win them all, but you lose every bargain you don't try.

      • Actually there is.

A 90% off for a product that you need/want to buy anyway.

No point buying it if you don’t use it just because it’s cheap. The OZB way haha

Had huge dramas dealing with Emma mattress last time. I cannot and do not recommend dealing with them. Happy to take the sale but zero customer service once money changes hands.

The real question is, why didn't you post the deal to Ozbargain?

Getting a refund for something not being available, not being in stock or incorrectly priced is perfectly fine. I wouldn't have expected to get it and so long as they returned the money promptly they did nothing wrong. Why are you bugging their poor staff about it?

The case by the ACCC is entirely different too, that was pretending that the RRP is higher than it actually is. In your case, it was pretty clear that $121 was not the RRP.

    does anyone have mattress recommendations?

  • There is a massive thread on WP about buying one https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1694383

  • These guys are scum. Own Origin mattress as well, and run fake online mattress review websites, where you guessed it, origin and Emma sleep are at the top.

    Needs its own ACCC investigation

  • I highly recommend Ecosa mattresses, available at https://www.ecosa.com.au/.
After fracturing my lower back, I spent months researching mattresses. Despite trying Sealy Posturepedic, as a side sleeper, I consistently woke up with sore hips. Switching to Ecosa in 2016 was a game-changer for me. Initially, I also puchased the mattress topper, but found it too soft. Placing it under the mattress, however, gave me the perfect balance for a fantastic night's sleep.
Their sheet sets are incredibly soft and maintain their quality wash after wash without shrinking.
Investing in comfort is crucial for waking up refreshed and full of energy. Trust me on this one—you'll thank me later!

    • Ecosa would be slightly better quality than Emma and Koala, but nothing amazing in terms of durability. Comparing to good mattresses like Ausbeds and Quokka that is.
Still if it's comfortable and it works for you it works!

We had all sorts of problems getting a new mattress. We wanted medium to firm due to back issues. We bought a Miracoil through Myer. It was delivered and it was like sleeping on concrete. Asked to change it and was told there was no refund or exchange policy. I had to go through credit card charge back and eventually got a refund as it was not fit for purpose.

I ended up getting a highly recommended mail order mattress (not a cheap one) from Sleep Republic - with a full refund policy. It's the best mattress I've ever had!

    • After about a month of research, I ended up getting a Sleep Republic mattress too.

For a side-sleeper it has been perfect for me. I have no experience with their customer service and haven't had it for long, so can't comment on that.

  • There is a factory called Making Mattresses in Brisbane. (They used to advertise thier Bellissimo mattress on tv.) A friend shopped around for ages before purchasing there, so I followed. That was 20 years ago and the mattress is as firm as the day we bought it.
