Best Net Radio Stations?

I know this is highly subjective but I'm looking for recommendations for best Net Radio for streaming background music all day.

Some conditions (with some exceptions):

  • Minimal talking, don't want to hear what the Announcer thinks about the latest current affairs or hear them laugh at their own jokes, just want music.
  • Don't like cheesy pop/over-produced/top 40/boy/girl band type music, prefer 'real' music.
  • Good mix of genres minus hard metal, hip-hop or doof-doof. That has a time and place but not as background music.
  • Regular rotation. When you listen all day you get sick of hearing the same 'hits' over and over.

My current favourite is KUTX. It plays great mix of almost everything (Alternative, funk, country, jazz, disco, rock etc) and manages to find unique, quality music from across the decades I don't hear elsewhere. In the car I play Indie+Alt which has a great selection but tends to loop the playlist too often. Just wondering if others have recommendations similar to these?

You want someone to recommend a single station to your specific taste? Good luck.

Yes, that was the request, and some people managed to give recommendations so it's not that hard. Either you know some or you don't.

      • It was put there for you to choose your own favorite flavor of music.

sometimes vanilla isn't enough and a little licorice is needed

Using TuneIn currently, but open to suggestions if there's something better

  • The Apple Radio station Apple 1 and Hits are good, and Country if you like country. For free you can only listen to them live (compared to listening to any old episode or any album or song you want). I haven't quite figured it out but it seems to play "live" for 24 hours a day I'm pretty sure, but 12 of those hours are just a repeat of the previous 12 hours. But without a paid subscription it's free, ad free, it plays the popular new and old music most people want to hear, all of the DJs and guests are the people who actually make the music. It's pretty great. And Beats 1 has stopped doing that airhorn noise all the time, it actually sounds like a real radio station now. Sometimes the schedule will be taken over by a countdown of best albums, or a retrospective on Prince, or whatever else. But it normally sticks to a schedule, so you can be like "it's 3pm, time to listen to Elton John's Rockethour" or whatever, just like with real radio. iTunes on PC, the Music app on Mac and iOS, and Apple Music app on Android.

  • If you liked Triple J back in the day (whenever your day was), then Double J isn’t too bad. Not a massive fan of Dylan Lewis, but the music is pretty good otherwise throughout the day.

  • Check out the multiple stations at San Francisco based somafm.com

  • Radio Jackie, typical commercial station, different music to Aus stuff, SW London, top of Surrey. https://radiojackie.com/hls/
