Bauhn Electrical Power Meter $14.99 @ ALDI

380

Useful to find energy vampires in your home, much cheaper than Bunnings, although I don't know if Aldi's one has accuracy specification (many smart plugs with power meter don't specify their accuracy and can be wildly inaccurate, e.g. Cygnett smart plug 52W vs 61W, 1793W vs 2009W, 8.22A vs 8.6A), but should be easy enough to return within 60 days if not satisfied.

Tapo P110 is one sale for $21 on Amazon. $25 for P110M if “Matter” matters.

Captain here - it's about TP-Link smart plugs:

Matter is an Application Layer (OSI 7) IoT / smart home communication standard

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matter_(standard)(en.wikipedia.org)
      https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2024/01/25/matter-livestream-blog/(home-assistant.io)

If you want Matter compatible plugs, need the P100M.
If you want Energy Monitoring, need the P110
If you want Energy Monitoring and Matter, need the P110M

      As seen in this thread.

And thread is another wireless protocol, but that doesn't matter right now.

Thanks for that, I was tooooo lazy!

Prefer the Tapo version as it's width only takes up 1 socket space and the wifi power monitoring version is so convenient

      • TP Link and Tapo FTW! I've got over a dozen of the TP energy monitoring plus and they're fantastic. Simple setup and haven't failed in 4ish years.

      • I've got the old TP-Link switches. Use them more as a power meter now that anything else, and one reason being because they are so bulky and block adjacent sockets.

Good power meters though, quite responsive in the app.

My P110 died after only a couple of months, Tapo didn't want to hear about it without my receipt. Disappointed.

      • +6

Buy another, then you have a receipt.

These are less than $14 delivered on eBay.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/375053018027

Aldi does have a great 60 day return policy.

    • sorted. thanks for this

    • Damn, 13.75 delivered!, and here I was considering the $20 2 day delivery one on Amazon like there isn’t a cost of living crisis at the moment.

I kinda want to get some just to see how much juice my three 3d printers are chewing up each week..kind of scared for the result 🤣

      • But the money you spend could pay for more juice instead.

    • i remember getting one of these years ago for like 5 bucks or something. good ol days

Useful to find energy vampires in your home

What if I already know my gf is an energy vampire?

    • Then this device won't bring any extra value to your household?

    • +3

      is her name Colin?

      • Evie

  • For that price you can occasionally score an energy-monitoring plug that's connected to your wifi and controllable via it, right?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/tp-link-tapo-p110

However, this Aldi device doesn't require a network to see the readings.

edit: Just saw the first comment here is re the same.

  • is this any better than the ones on ebay or amazon?
wouldnt they all be roughly the same?

    • You can buy the TP Link ones from Bunnings, DM, HN, JB and OW.
      I have 4 myself.

Your local library very likely has a full energy assessment kit for free. Give them a buzz.

    • be sure to say hello to jv when at your local library to rent a $15 power meter

      • +6

My library kit came with a bunch of things, including IR gun to detect draughts/areas lacking insulation, water flow measuring cup, thermometer to adjust fridge/freezer temps. Also means this equipment isn't just hanging around in your cupboards for years after you're done using it for a couple days. 🤷‍♂️

        • +2

Yeah that makes sense. I read, or saw on a ted talk maybe, that the average drill is only operated for like 8 minutes in its entire life before being thrown away. So sharing these tools helps save money and resources.

          • @AustriaBargain: That's crazy, damn. Yeah this is why me and my mates just share tools and supplies. Saves money, space, time, environment, etc.

        • +1

The energy kit thing is awesome, didn't know about that! Will look into it.

There are "tool libraries" too, unsure if there's overlap with actual libraries like you suggested, but I've seen there are organised tool library club things around the place. Helps to not have to buy everything for the occasional use, and make sure the tools actually get used more than 8 minutes.

        • I'm guessing the kit is pretty standard across councils Australia wide so would have been something like this

Bought 2 of the meross wifi. Haven't tested them yet. Not sure how accurate these are. Not sure if I need to buy a more professional one when I need a more reliable result.

    • I have the meross ones. I think they are fairly accurate. To get a cost estimator you have to put in your electricity rate though, and if the rate is variable or you have solar it can be hard to figure out the true cost. I've heard that very high draw devices, like electric heaters, can break these things too.

      • To get a cost estimator you have to put in your electricity rate though

How else any device of that kind would know the cost?

Also every plug would have certain rating, eg. 2kW max, which can be easily exceeded by heaters.

        • Dunno. I don't actually care how much power things draw so I don't measure. You kinda get a sense what things cost after paying electricity bills for enough time. You know how much power things use just by converting the $ per 1000W and applying it to the rated W of a device that's on and using full power. We got stickers on many devices telling us how much power they draw its. Don't really need to know exactly how much things use.

          • +1

@AustriaBargain: One use case, example only: It's hard to know how much a Fridge uses so these can be handy to leave connected for a week or so to see how each days averages out.

            • +1

@Borg: Yeah TVs too. My TV when turned on says something like "the current settings may use more power than the sticker on the box said it would".

    • +1

I have lots of Meross ones and they are great but do take a few secs to update.
I also have several of these as well which I use to quickly spot check items as it has a display and updates on the fly.
They are useless for working out actual cost if using TimeofUse as no method to enter different rates i.e. Peak, Shoulder & Offpeak. Handy regardless.
