In before the ‘8gb isn’t enough’ crowd downvotes this

    • +5

this will trigger them, I just know it

    • +17

At least this deal is not a pretender-pro $2150 laptop claiming to be "Pro" with the only "Pro" feature being a spinning fan.

That being said the $2099 M2 Pro with 8GB RAM listed above isn't a good deal at all.

      • The M2 Pro there has 16 GB of RAM according to the page - pretty sure the 14" Macbook Pros (the actual Pros, not the Air-with-a-fan-plus-the-word-pro) come with 16GB minimum regardless.

      • +1

That fan does make a difference under extended load when doing intensive stuff. There's also the bigger battery and hence better battery life.

        • the Pro listed has three Thunderbolt ports, which means it has TWO fans.Better thermal envelope, better performance.

yes, you pay Apple extra for an added USB port and an added fan.

          • @mantichoral: @Feepitee created this listing listed the M2 Pro Macbook incorrectly - it's the 14" with 16GB RAM, not the 13" Pro that is just the air with one fan.

The 14 here is the full fat, 16GB, 1 TB HDMI port containing 3 USB port proper one.

EDIT looks like it's sold out now, so it no longer matters

            • +1

@Droz: I tend to think of the one-fan two-USB Pro as Pro minus, rather than Air Plus. Pro case, after all.

The way I see it, the only two real choices are:

MacBook Air, but with min 512GB SSD and more memory, min 16GB, or:

the cheapest real Pro with three ports and two fans.

              • @mantichoral: I like the Pro-minus designation - makes it easier to understand!

                • @Droz: I'm also rather irked by this generation of Magsafe reworking the fourth USB port, and wonder if plugging in some sort of Magsafe to USB-port adapter could expose some limited USB functionality.

                  • @mantichoral: I don't think it will - pretty sure it accepts only power.

The other ports are thunderbolt 4, and apparently charge at 100w max, whilst the magsafe port goes all the way up to 140w with the right cable/charger.

I guess the only other thing to do is get a hub that has power passthrough if you want more ports…

                    • @Droz: yeah, I read that the central comms pin in MagSafe uses the 1Wire protocol, and USB chippery to talk to the USB charger is embedded in the MagSafe connector lead head. It's USB as far as the male connector, and no further.

                      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MagSafe

Buy a hub? Still, it wouldn't be a Macbook if there wasn't at least one dongle.

I love how they hide the 8GB of Ram from the title.

      • -3

        I prefer he/him pronouns :)

        • +2

          my pronouns are I / me / 16GB.

    • I see these comments on macbook posts more than I see the complaining about 8gb now.

    • To be fair 8Gb is fine for the air as it's more browser/streaming/light work focused compared to the MacBook Pro which is targeted for more heavy workloads.

      • So is any entry level laptop in that case…

  • What's the crowd take on JB renewed?

    • +48

      pre-owned … probably returned because 8gig ram wasn't enough…. :P

      • +5

i bought a jb hi-fi refurb last year - 13' M2 Air. It was essentially perfect - even battery showed 100% - the only thing missing was the unboxing experience…… Actually that is one negative - jb hi-fi sent the laptop in a large box with absolutely zero bubble wrap or any stuffing - the laptop was just rattling around in the box (well they did bubble wrap the power adaptor so a point there)…….

        • hehe i was just saying that tongue in cheek with all the 8gb discourse … glad to know it was a good-ish experience for you though :)

  • +1

Wait for jb perks 10% off

    • +2

      Normally it excludes Apple products

  • +1

Anyone bought any of these 'Renewed' and how new is it actually? Bet not like Apple refurb? Just a wipe and cleanup but nothing changed inside out?

  • +1

oh its refurbished.. was wondering why it was so cheap

    ^What is "Renewed Stock"?

This device is pre-owned and has been through a quality control process. You may see some cosmetic blemishes and slight scratches.

These products are not eligible for AppleCare services.

Renewed stock will be sent in generic, non-branded packaging, with a power cable included.

    • +3

      So it's just "used", really

    • +1

Liquid cleaned out guaranteed for 365 days ONLY and NO split second longer!

  • +2

Wonder what battery life would be like

      • +27

MacBooks aren’t powered by magic. Every battery gets worse with age and usage.

        • I think you've misinterpreted both the question and answer, the original comment wasn't about the lifetime of the battery, the original commenter was asking about day to day battery, which with m1/m2/m3's insane efficiency is very much not an issue and will last a week with a light workload. That's what gronkmas- alright I read the name and decided to stop defending them nvm

      • -3

Apple copying Samsung: It has an extra feature: Wobbles because of bloated battery.

  • +3

With 8gb ram, only one worth considering to me is the M1.
Just realised it's used. Hmm, now even the M1 doesn't seem worth it.

  • so these renewed stock are those return from customer?

    • The customer can't really just return the product for no reason/change of mind once they have opened the packaging. I'm wondering how jb got these renewed stock.

    • +1

I'm thinking that they were traded in?

  • Yeah I would like to know as well. What are the cycles on these renewed items

  • +1

Didn’t know JB sell second hand

  • while normally 8gb is enough on apple silicon, the new on device AI features that's coming down the line might render that no longer sufficient…

  • Anyone can confirm these have no Apple warranty?

    • read the posts above.

    • +2

      According to the JB website….

      Manufacturer's warranty 1 Year

      • that's good if Apple can offer that.

    • Apple Care does not matter since you have ACL that covers you for 3 years I believe. Happy for someone to confirm this.

  • +5

Selling refurbished notebooks is more profitable than selling brand new item.

  • Thanks OP. Just bought one.

  • +3

    Solid deal even being "renewed".
I'd jump on this but my M1 8gb Air is still going strong. Best laptop i've owned by far (for general use)

  • If only JB went into details on the battery health for these renewed devices
The Pro model is tempting since my MacBook from 2017 is gonna die soon

  • Link not working

  • Page no longer working

  • +4

I'd rather buy 16GB/256GB than 8GB/512 if constrained by budget, as the storage is expandable via USB-C but not the RAM.

  • +7
  • Man that M1 air is tempting. It's the cost of a new display from Apple. Could harvest the display for a broken one and then use the base as a sort of M1 mini

    • +10

Or… Just use it without harvesting the display? And use the broken one as a sort of M1 mini

      • +1

        Lmao. I'm an idiot sometimes

    • Google it before you try. After 2017 all Apple products can't be swapped over easy.
You would have to be a fool to buy any Apple product after 2007. Just calibrating the hinge on it wouldn't be worth the effort

  • +2

ah.. 512 OOS , bought one 256G , my alienware x14 screen just broken , really need a new one for general works.

    • but its not a “new one” 😊

  • Can you claim GST if you travel overseas on a renewed/refurbished product? I can't see why not but just wanted to make sure.

    • Yes of course it will come with a tax invoice

    • Are you bringing the laptop back into the country?

      • I think one can bring the item back without needing to pay back GST as far as it's within the duty-free allowance

        • I don't see anything about that on the TRS website

          https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/touris…

          • @tabboy:

If you bring goods back into Australia for which a GST refund via the TRS has been claimed, the goods must be declared, and if the value of those goods (combined with any other overseas/duty free purchases) exceeds the passenger concession allowance, any applicable GST and/or duty may need to be paid unless another concession (example, all personal clothing – except furs) is available.

It's not front and centre, but they do mention it briefly.

            • @bydl: @snvl link is clearer, so up to $900 it seems.

        • +1

Be careful - it's not as straight-forward as it used to be! Read below:

          https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/nasty-change-tour…

          • @bauser99: Those screenshots in that link doesn't reflect what the official website is saying now. This is the condition now

            • +1

@tabboy: You are right, we can still claim up to that $900 threshold without having to pay back the claimed GST.

  • Wow

  • +2

Thanks OP. Mac mini m2 $549 is a bargain

    • I was contemplating whether to buy or not, and its now gone 😭

      • Buy first, contemplate/think/research later

        • Contemplating as everything had a delivery fee!

I decided on the Mac mini 512gb for an additional $100!

        • Ended up being cancelled :(

  • +3

Grabbed the 16inch MacBook M2 Pro. Great price for second hand and no longer need to keep checking the Apple refurbished website.

  • +1

Grabbed the MacBook Air 15-inch with M2 Chip, 256GB SSD at $1199

According to JB’s website it’s covered by 12 months manufacturer warranty

  • 13 and 15 feet is quite the screen size :) I think you might mean 13" and 15".

    13' M1 MacBook Air 256gb $749
    15' M2 MacBook Air 512gb $1299
    13' M2 Pro MacBook Pro 1TB $2099

  • m1 or m2?
is worth upgrading from macbook pro 2017?

    • +3

if you're coming from a MBP2017 you won't notice much of a difference between the M1 and M2 in terms of speed, but the new design is way better. go m2.

      • but i do notice a big difference between 2017 mbp and m1?

        • +2

Absolutely. Both in terms of power and battery life.

        • +1

100% you will. I went from a similar model and it was night and day

  • +1

Really trying to resist the 14' M2 Pro, I don't have a laptop at the moment but i'm not sure I really need one..

    • +1

It doesn't sound like you need one for any "Pro" usage so save some money and go for an Air instead

    • I gave in and went for one of those, great compromise (I use that word loosely given the cost) between size and power. It was the 16Gb memory that I thought would then give me that extra oomph if I needed it down the track if I wanted to dabble more into video editing etc.

      • The M2 Pro Macbook Pro is a beast for sure

  • -1

    Its 2nd hand… and old

  • $949, I shouldn't be complaining about the 8GB RAM!

  • Looks like the M1 MacBook Air for $799 is gone now too. Now would the M2 MacBook Pro w/ Touch Bar for $999 be decent for a 13" laptop for a mix of office & creative apps (Affinity)?

    • Yes.

    • Back in stock

    • +1

8GB not enough for Affinity or any graphics work from my experience.

      • Thanks for the heads up! My previous machines have been all 16GB+. Might have to see what's on the PC side of things, or hit up eBay.

        • The macbook is a different machine at 16GB of RAM.
Especially if you're using design or video software.
Basic browsing etc you're fine but so is a windows entry laptop.
