It was a similar price at Georges recently.
I was tempted by this, but F4.0 does limit your options somewhat.

  • Wouldn’t the 24-105mm be the one to get over this lens?

    • This is smaller and lighter and wider.

    • Normally yes but the 20-70 is reviewers to be noticeably sharper

It is too expensive, but if camera and lens matter then buy Sony.

How is it too expensive? Genuinely interested.

It's not. Only if you're comparing with crappy kit lenses.

Hard to compare a lens of this formula (rather unique focal range, and it's a premium compact zoom)…but let's try:

        Tamron 17-50mm f4 https://www.digidirect.com.au/catalog/product/view/id/326067…

Actually…that's all I've got. The Tamron is quite a bit wider at each end of the range - Sony is longer. I'd probably prefer the Sony with the 70mm on the long end and giving up 17mm wide. There's not a lot in this space. It's a constant F4 zoom, with ultra wide through short tele. Not common. Designed for travel use really.

Would be an excellent landscape lens where you're going to be stopping it down anyway. Street use etc. That's not saying you can't try to blur backgrounds with it - it's still going to be faster at the long end than a kit lens is.

Generally if you see a zoom lens with a constant minimum aperture, it's going to have a more premium optical design. Commonly it's f2.8…but there are more and more f4 alternatives coming to market, which makes for a more compact lens. Very useful if you don't mind losing around one stop of light.

Thanks! You've pretty well echoed my sentiments. I just got back from a trip and had with me the 50mm 2.8 G and 24mm F1.4 GM; to be honest at least 90% of my shots were using the 50mm closed off at F4+. I think this lens is a great option for travel, especially the weight saving vs. any of the Sony GM zooms.

This is an excellent all-round travel lens. It's a lens for people who want a landscape lens with the ability to zoom in. It's a great hiking lens due to it's versatility and light weight.

  • I’m getting this because of the wider focal length.

Have tossed this up with a 24-105mm f/4 G Lens, but that’s older technology and I’m happy to forgo the extra focal length to get something wider.

Better for travel and landscape photography. Looking forward to having a play with it.

With Sony, I got a message it’s on back order till 10/7.

  • Great price, these were originally $1600 RRP then later ~ $1400

Had one and sold it; was nice and compact with a good zoom range but preferred by Tamron 28-75 f2.8 for stills for around the same price

    • Yep..the f2.8 does make the difference and the Tamron is still a better performer

  • Pitty that EOFY 10% discount voucher can’t be applied on top of price match.
