Price Sense Check - Shower Floor Regrouting

Just getting a sense check if I have overpaid for this work - agreed to it over the phone without taking additinal quotes

Paid 1000 + GST - or should this be closer to 500-700 job ?

On phone was told, could take half a day, on site it was done in about 1.5 hours

Shower base done by builder developed hairline cracks, on cement based grouting

Regrouted using epoxy resin silicon based grout, trade also put silicon in shower corners, and the base for niche ( we had not discussed this as a requirement )

Is this gonna be another argument with the misso

Of course multiple quotes is always the best way to go, and without seeing it they'll have quoted based on the worst case scenario. But the money's already gone, so there's not much to do about it now.

Could you have paid less? Absolutely. It would have cost you in time and effort, and if you went real cheap you might not have got a result you're happy with. If this fix doesn't solve your issue you've paid enough to expect them to remediate.

You paid a convenience tax, but don't beat yourself up over it.

If you're happy with the work just let it go.

Felt bad for ripping you off so went above and beyond with another 2 minutes work.

    Wow πŸ™€
    That's cheap for a Sunday.

Could have easily done this yourself for the price of materials. Yes, $1000 was overpaying. But as someone said, it's done. Forget about it.

    • I wouldn't call regrouting a wet area an easy DIY task. As someone that's just done a laundry, the tiling is the hardest part.

  • Thanks for the thoughts, they scheduled work on Saturday, I'm ok with the work, the oricing didn't feel right, thought id just get a sense check

Basically i had googled the average cost for shower regrouting, it came back with between 1000-3000, so thats why I just accepted the quote

You incurred a lazy tax, contractor wins.
They did quality work, happy days.
Should this not have been a warranty job?
Your reflection may be that the sum total of all human knowledge isn’t accessible on the internet and often the only way to find out stuff is by talking to people.

What's the thoughts on electricians? I have a small 1-2 hour rewiring job (2 leads), and I can't get a quote under $1,000.

    • Seems high, assuming $400 just to walk in the door. Are they long runs with a high material cost?

      • About 5 metres in a straight line. Don't think new cable costs much. They have to replace old cotton covered wiring, but, I have been around when the lights and power circuits were done, seemed quick and easy.

    • small 1-2 hour rewiring job

Can you hold off until there is more work to do or any preventative maintenance to be done?

Might find the cost barely increases but you get more out of their time.. e.g. any power points that need replacement or an air conditioner power cable that needs shortening.

      • I had my unit completely rewired in 2021. Problem is strata committee decided after this we would have to do common property wiring as well from hallway switchboard to unit. They want it done now (naturally).

    • Found the invoice for my last sparky job in 2021, 1-hour to replace a trippy breaker, charged at $217.50 hourly rate incl GST, incl travel (Brisbane).

  • Well if anyone has any recommendations they'd like to share (Sydney), please DM, I would be very grateful πŸ™

Tiling all the walls (2.4 metres high) and floor 3metres x 2 metres of my bathroom cost just under $2500, (lazy tax because I didn't want to do it) - yes you overpaid but a weekend incurs a higher cost to start with and you got charged the lazy tax as well. Cost is sunk now so no point worrying, I have made the same mistake before, is your wife Vietnamese because if so I can understand the argument that's coming lol

  • Sticking to getting quotes from airtasker for comparison, have some other work at home needs fixing as well haha
