Predator Helios Neo 16-inch i9-13900HX/32GB/1TB/RTX4060 Laptop $1888 + Delivery ($0 C&C / in-Store) @ Harvey Norman

180

I thought this was a pretty good deal for an i9, 4060 laptop. The previous gen i9-13900HX isn't too far behind the current gen i9-14900HX. Plus 32gb ram and a 2560x1600 165hz (description says 240hz but specs say 165hz). 1tb as well!

Not many around by the look of it.

  • The older gen Helios Neo plastic build quality really looks very cheap and flimsy. New model so much better

It's an Acer. Can't be very good

This comment is so outdated - it reminds me of that quote from back to the future about stuff made in Japan…

Acer doesn't just make budget level stuff any more. Their high end gear is on par for quality with the likes of Asus and Gigabyte, although in my experience, the Acer support is much better.

Maybe it's outdated. But doesn't mean it's wrong

My budget Acer Spin1050ti laptop looks slicker, modern and is well built compared to other's in its price range

I'm definitely of the generation that grew up with Acer being trash. It still feels uncomfortable to say…but the last few Acer devices I've got for people have been great. Well priced, well made, and have lasted a long time!

  • get to the chopper!

  • It looks like it is a nice laptop. I suspect that for gaming it would be limited by the RTX4060, and wouldn't greatly outperform a cheaper RTX4060 laptop like this (expired) $1299 one. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/827737

Of course, the CPU is generally more important for productivity tasks. I'd read the specs as a great general-purpose laptop that is also good at gaming than a "gaming laptop". And by "Good at gaming" I mean it can run every other game at QHD with >60fps, and most games at >60fps if you step down to ultra-FHD: https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-4060-Laptop…

I have this exact spec with 64gb ram running @ 5200mhz and a 2nd SSD added
Great laptop. Solid, exterior is tough.
Battery life isn't great, stuff all useful power saving features like screen refresh that other units will have, it does nerf the CPU to 25W
13900hx is overkill for gaming with a 4060, it is great for heavy CPU workloads though, but not much benefit over 13700hx as whatever you do is power limited even at its considerable 157W turbo / 100W long power.
Note, this year's version limits 14900HX to a lower 60W long power, according to the Jarrodtech review.
I get more efficiency out of it by limiting P core turbo below 4.5ghz, even while gaming, which is never CPU limited.
No CPU undervolt …… Can get into adv bios with a pre boot key combo, options are there, but UV does nothing.
With a couple settings unlocked, Throttlestop can control PL1/PL2
My 4060 overclocks +250 with no issue but is still a pretty weaksauce GPU, needs upscalers for the QHD screen, I'm pretty happy with it given the 4070 is barely any better, still has the same 8Gb/128bit memory setup, and the next step up to 4080 is a lot pricier
Cooling is pretty good, CPU thermal throttles at 90C, it can handle anywhere from 80-90W on quietish low fans to mid 80s at 100W, on noisier fan levels.
Case doesn't get very warm at all, no hear bleed through on the keyboard.
    Screen is crisp and bright.
Power connector is nice and solid.
Predator sense software has borked up badly once in 5 months requiring an uninstall/reinstall, otherwise the LED/fan/power profiles works fine.
After quite a few hibernate cycles sometimes it all craps out, but a proper boot cycle restores it.

It's a good unit, does everything I need it to.

    • hey mate just checking how is the laptop performing? i'm considering getting this model too, but have read the recent reports about Intel Raptor lake stability issues. These HX series laptop chips are using the same SKUs as the desktop version. have you experienced any of those issues?

      https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/dev-reports-…

      • Nope. Happy I underclocked it from week 1 tho. Limiting turbo multipliers limits VID, now that I check it they're at least 100mV lower across the board (except under full power/temp throttle) up to 200mV lower under part load when the CPU is not trying to hit 5ghz+ with 1.4V

It's the excessive voltages needed to hit the silly turbo speeds that are the issue (the ring bus gets the same Vcore). Even though these laptop chips are the same silicon, they're generally not pushed as hard.

This issue has made me double plus unhappy that undervolting is blocked. Because of security exploits in Intel's own firmware. What a fustercluck of a company they have turned into.

        • hi mate, i ordered the unit and should be arriving in next couple of days. a bit new to all this BIOS modifying stuff can you please share what settings you are using and some simple instructions? i'd like to reduce the turbo multiplier ASAP to reduce any potential damage. would appreciate your insights, cheers.

i've modified BIOS before on my AMD CPU but that was just to enable XMP and PBO, are the laptop BIOS similar? I read somewhere you have to press hidden key combinations to unlock the "advanced" BIOS?

In the bios there's a couple overclocking enable toggles that I forget otoh but they allow Throttlestop to control multipliers

  • Just paid $1598 for one of these as they were advertised in Thursdays West Australian newspaper for that price. Hopefully it lasts ok as my recent experience with a new laptop was it failing just after warranty expired.

    • At Harvey Norman WA only?

      • WA only and I had to take the newspaper in. Didn't really want to buy from HN but at that price kinda hard to say no.

  • … and its definitely not a 3080 killer.

Hey, hope someone can explain this for me.

I just purchased this yesturday (on order), It was gonna be a nice upgrade and great deal to justify it.

Sale: $1888 and it was $1250 off.

Now the sale is finished, its price has gone to $1988, with no sale…

This is dodgy right? This sounds like predatory advertisements or something… I dunno, just seems bad. Almost going to cancel it.

    • Yes that's dodgy - but it's Harvey Norman…

Same if you check Officeworks laptop prices, once EOFY ended, most been jacked back up again!

  • Pls help.

Is $2100 for the 4070 version of this laptop a good deal?

I know 4070 laptop version frames maxing out at 110W and 8GB of VRAM puts a lot off but for that price?
