What a beast of a cpu

    • I think the 9950X3D with two X3D chips that can overclock and or are at the same MHz as the non X3D chip will be the true beast.

We will see it later in the year :)

      • +1

9950 will be a beast but the price tag at launch is will likely be nuts. If buying now make sure you get a good x670E mb so you have an upgrade path.

      • Do you have a source on 9950x3d specs?
Dual CCD with 3D V-cache would be very interesting

  • +1

Something to finally let the 4090 stretch it's legs

    • -2

I mean, not really? The 7800X3D would be better for gaming workloads (and assisting the 4090)

      • The 7800X3D would be better for gaming workloads

Doesn't the body text claim otherwise?

        • +2

The body can claim whatever it wants haha, but without any links and widespread benchmarking to confirm this, I wouldn't go selling your 7800X3D

          • @DiscountForThee: Oh no for sure. Don't waste money on this if you have a 7800x3d. Still though. If they can utilise it it's pretty impressive specs

            • +1

@Micsmit: Definitely don’t go from 7800x3d to 7950x3d just for gaming. If you were buying it for workloads or a mix of both and your software can use the 7950 sure, but I’d wait for the new ones round the corner unless you are upgrading from something way older.

      • +1

What ?. How so? This has 40mb more L3 cache, higher boost clock and double the cores.

        • +2

I think because the cache is split over two dies, it was 'slower'.

          • @lordra: Yeah only half the cores have the vcache so the others get “parked” when the windows game bar detects a game.

New processors are rumoured to have the vcache on all cores so will be next level.

            • @veridianfive: Right ok, makes sense. Also tpd is the same for double the cores . Must spend alot of time parked. I doubt many games even saturate 8 cores let alone 16. And honestly who is productive enough to need 16. Productivity lol. My pute is a procrastinator plus

            • @veridianfive: "when" is still more of an if it detects a game.

  • I've seen the 7800x3d for $544 off eBay, is it worth per $ the performance for the 7950x3d?

    • +6

7800x3d definitely remains a better value unless you need the extra cores

    • +2

Depends on what you need, if you only need a gaming PC,the 7800x3d will be perfect, However, if you want a gaming PC plus the ability to handle very heavy productive tasks, definitely go with this one.

      • A big plus is being able to run both a gaming VM with the X3D CCD, as well as running multiple services and containers on the other CCD.

    • +1

I am rather going for a 7800x3d for around $570 from local pc shop easier if there is a issue to just return to them rather than ebay

    • Aliexpress for $450.
      Non retail version.

  • +1

You can feel that the Ryzen 9000 series is close.

  • will this bottleneck my 3060?

    • +1

No, if anything the 3060 will bottleneck this

      • It's one of the fastest and most power efficient desktop CPUs available. It's something you would pair with a 7900xtx or 4080/90. The 3060 would the bottleneck with most of the mid tier CPUs available today.

    • +3

I play competetive FPS, mostly PUBG lately. I have a 7800X3D and it barely breaks a sweat. My 2080ti now hits 99%.
Your 3060 will be the bottleneck.

      • +1

Shit man. Spent all that money on a top end am5 build and didn't get a 4070ti super ?

  • Waiting for i9 14900k discount!

    • +7

      Username checks out

    • +4

Why? So that you can install a BIOS which tanks it's performance due to all the heat issues it's been having.

      • It's been getting pretty nippy this winter, I could always do with a space heater when I'm gaming tbh

      • What, 253 / 320w for new stable baseline profile not enough?

New BIOS is to address motherboard manufacturers putting core current going above 307A and out of spec, nothing to do with overheating.

Think back to the whole Asus/gigabyte VSOC debacle where b650/x670 motherboards were literally blowing up am5 CPUs, similar issue.

        Any decent budget 240mm aio will do ~300w on lga1700 (LT520 @ 310w, atmos 240 @ 290w etc).

Whereas hitting 300w at all on am5 requires liquid nitrogen / DICE or at the very least a phase changer, it's laughable.

Thanks OP. Ordered 2 to run in SLI.

    • Get slapped with the import tax?

    • These won't run in SLI. It has to be Crossfire.

      • I can make anything run in SLI with gorilla glue.

  • +1

gaming performance wise, Ryzen 9 7950X3D is worse than 7800X3D

    • But op said

However, now that everything has been improved, the 7950X3D has surpassed the 7800X3D in performance, making it the strongest gaming CPU while also being capable of handling most productivity needs.

      Is that really true?

    • That's based on the original benchmarks where games weren't using the 3d cached cores properly. It has improved a lot with updates since launch. You get this if you want the 16 cores and not for gaming only.

    • +1

The manufacturing logic for AMD's X3D processors is as follows: the highest quality X3D chips are allocated to the server market. Among the remaining CPUs, the better ones are used to produce the 7950X3D. This is why most 7950X3Ds have a minimum operating frequency of 5150 MHz, with many reaching 5300 MHz. The least performant batch is used to manufacture the 7800X3D, which is why, at best, the 7800X3D operates at 5050 MHz. Therefore, when scheduling is not an issue, the 7950X3D will always outperform the 7800X3D.

      • What servers are using 3d vcache?
And the epyc line is for servers….

        • +1

AMD's V-Cache technology indeed has its origins in the server market. Initially, the technology was developed to enhance the performance of data center and server processors by increasing the amount of L3 cache available, which helps in handling large datasets and improving latency-sensitive workloads.

Once the V-Cache technology was proven effective in the server environment, AMD decided to test its potential in consumer CPUs. They introduced this technology in the Ryzen 7 5800X3D to evaluate its impact on gaming performance. Surprisingly, the additional cache provided a significant boost in gaming applications, as many modern games benefit from increased cache sizes due to their complex and data-intensive nature (AnandTech)

          • @flypig: so what current ryzen based cpu is currently in use in the server market?

  • +2

Man Im so close to upgrading from 11900k which i really should keep as a heater this winter cause it actually works, but 9th gen is so close. 7800x3d looks the part still. These prices will fall further

    • Nvidia 3000 series are fantastic space heaters

  • Bought this for $915 earlier this year and even at that price I think it's completely worth it. Damn amazing CPU does everything you want and pushes the highest frames.

Tinkering with Process Lasso is easy and allows you to dump all other services on the frequency cores leaving games solely to the 3D Vcache cores, meaning background processes have no impact on gaming.

Plus with some curve optimiser you can get all vcache cores to boost to 5.25ghz and stay at that rate. The cpu is better than it's given credit for

It's an amazing deal at this price

    • Yes, as I mentioned above, the V-Cache cores of the 7950X3D can run at 5150-5300 MHz, which allows it to outperform the 7800X3D by 5-8%.

  • +1

I'm waiting for 9800x3d . My 5700x3d is fine for now

  • I got one used 3 months ago for $600 - heck of a deal.

  • Is this good for video editing or should i go for Intel?

    • +2

I you want a space heater go for Intel. Plus as mentioned before the top of the line 13th/14th gen currently have heat issues. Intel had to release a BIOS which tanks performance to resolve the instability issues.

      https://community.intel.com/t5/Processors/Regarding-Reports-…

This Ryzen processor is the best balance of desktop power efficiency, productivity and gaming performance.

      • Better to wait for new CPUs from AMD

    • This would destroy Intel for the money.

  • anyone know how warranty on a CPU ex-US works for AMD?

  • Can confirm scheduling still is an issue, and that process lasso is a easy fix.

    • Is or Was? Seem various reddit posts from people who said it was an issue, say current BIOSes have resolved the need to rely on 3rd party software. ?

  • Coming up as $823.22 now, possibly expired deal.
