Flight Prepone Change

Hi all, I have a flight booked on the night of 26th June at 8:40pm to Phuket via Kiwi website.

Air Asia has now preponed it by 20 hours so it will be leaving midnight previous night. I have work scheduled and my annual leave starts from 27th June. This change will also mean that I now have a 24 hour layover in KL instead of initial 4 hour layover.

I contacted Kiwi who asked me to contact Air Asia. Asia has a chat bot who asked me to contact agent as it was booked with them. I contacted Kiwi back and informed them but they are not willing to help.

What are my options here?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you, today I learned the word 'preponed'

Unfortunately budget airlines are budget for a reason. I'm not shitting on them, I fly on the all the time.

Have you bought travel insurance yet?

If so, maybe you can claim the hotel charge.

24hours in KL doesn't sound bad… enjoy it for one full day.

Take an extra day of leave and explain your circumstances to your boss? Hopefully they'll be understanding

    • Easy if you're a 9-5 office worker. If your on an operational roster and the boss needs to cover you with overtime it's not so easy to negotiate.

Prepare a list of alternative flights on the same carrier that you'd be happy with. Do the work up front. Make a note of the Date/time, flight number. Departure and arrival time. All passenger names.

Call Kiwi and ask them directly to request the alternative date. They would have to contact AirAsia to confirm if they accept the change.. 99% of the time the airline would accept if the route is the same and the date is very close. Travel agents, especially cheap ones don't want to do the legwork of searching for options. By giving them exactly the option that you want, they become just a message passer.. which is something they probably would be willing to do.

Your best alternative date would probably be a flight a day later. Which may mean you lose a night in Phuket instead. So you need to work out if there's even an acceptable alternative flight available. If there isn't.. then your only option is to change your leave dates or ask for a refund and rebook on a different airline.

24-hour in KL is actually pretty good… hotels there is cheap as well. That's not an issue as long as taking extra leave is not a problem for you.

You either accept, or cancel and rebook. You can't deal with the airline itself, because you booked with an agent. THE END

  • It's true that if you book via a travel agent, all changes will need to go through the agent, who will probably charge you a fee for the privilege.
