haha when I had mine made they stuffed up measurements so bad. My shoulderpads stuck out like tiny wings. Never been back.

MJ Bale + alterations much better option.

    • Tiny wings make you fly!

  • It's not clear how the deal works as most suits are over the $849 deal amount per suit.

  • Some places like boston or daniel hector have long and short fittings so easier to fit up with australian stock in a shop ftont business so you know it will fit, and their suits are about $400 each. custom made becomes an alternative when you really out the averages body shape e.g you are weight lifter and short fittings aren't wide enough.

Is it a bad sign the "custom tailored" suits are a bad fit on the model?

I know those suits are probably off the rack and not tailored to the model in these photographs, but if you are going to take promotional photos then why not find a better fit?

    • +1

Yeah , This whole deal is smelling like a bad suit with bad fit.

I see a gift card or code and all I see is the Dick Smith cash grab before they went bust!
Whats does everything think about the likelihood of this business longevity? I'm thinking this could just be one sign… but maybe I'm just old and grumpy?
Buyer beware but good luck to those braver than me?

    • +1

yeah. When you call up with gift card, they will say, oh, there is a 3 month wait for those measurements. Before you know it, They could be gone!

  • These are technically 'made to measure' calling them custom tailored is misleading.

    • Correct. I will say, the distinction has really fallen away over the last 10 years. Even the traditional tailors in Australia are cutting down their fittings for bespoke suits — used to be 3 or 4 fitting to construct, now often just 1 fitting before the final product, begging the question of whether it's really just 'made to measure'.

      • +1

1 fitting before the final product is made to measure in my books. Shops spruiking this as a 'tailored' suit are just preying on the inexperienced. Tailored is bare minimum one appointment before to measure and one fitting after to adjust.

I just want to say that the comments on this deal have brightened up an otherwise mundane Friday.

  • I would much rather spend $1200 on this https://www.mjbale.com/products/matsumoto-suit-navy . Full canvas, 100% Australian wool.

    • If it fits, yes, it's bordering on a bargain though…. I have seen similar at the DFO for $600. For full canvas that's a bargain if it fits you!

  • For anyone heading to Bangkok, I highly recommend Pinky Tailor (https://www.pinkytailor.com/) if you’re looking for quality shirts and suits. I have shirts made 10years ago and worn to work frequently that are still in great condition except for some fraying at the cuff and back of collar.

I picked premium quality Italian Cotton for shirts and they are approx. $100-150 but well worth it since it’s for 5-10years wear. Cotton/wool blend suits are around $500 and they are usually ready for collection within 4-5 days or they can send it direct to Australia with DHL. They are not cheap but other tailors' fabric and tailoring didn't come anywhere close imho

    • Thank you for this. I was actually browsing through comments in hop of someone making recommendations for overseas.

Would be happy to take a short vacation to get a suit made overseas. How long was the fitting process (I.e. How long should my holiday be 😅)?

      • -1

He… literally says that in the second paragraph?

        • He actually doesn't? He mentions how long it is ready for collection (which sounds like the period between the last fitting and the pick-up/delivery date) but doesn't talk about the fitting process and time. Good tailors would have multiple fitting sessions over a period of time

          • @DevlicK: This is a Bangkok tailor doing suits for $500. This is a fast, cheap, hopefully 'okay' tailor. We're not talking Saville Row here.

Fast cheap tailors can do 2 day turnarounds if you want through the door in the morning, and they generally don't faff about with multiple fittings, in my experience just one. Or none.

@rumblytangara: Sure but what was the problem with asking the question and getting clarification. I rather not make assumptions. Imagine booking a one week trip when I actually needed 2 weeks because I made an assumption and didn't seek clarification.

Also very interesting that you mentioned they are a "fast, cheap, hopefully 'okay' tailor" when OP mentions they are made from "premium quality Italian" and they are "not cheap" (Presumably the $500 price is from 5-10 years ago). So which is it?

Have you actually used them / had experience with this tailor? Because if not, I'm not even sure what benefit there is in "trying" to answer questions about the tailor and the fitting process. You're just making assumptions based off the price. You'll be surprised to know that some places in Asia, whilst having cheaper prices than Australia, offer premium services.

              • @DevlicK:

I've spent the past couple of decades in Asia, regularly taking visiting friends to tailors. You don't get 'premium' tailoring and materials for $500, even five or ten years ago.

I guess if you really wanted to know their turnaround time, you could email them, cause there's a website.

                • @rumblytangara: Well everyone has different experiences because I have friends who had used tailors in Asia and said they saw them over the course of a week or 2 and their suits were far better quality and cheaper than what you can get in Australia (prices have since gone up significantly so I am exploring). You can't just take your own personal experiences and generalise it.

Well I was hoping to get information from someone who had first-hand experience with this tailor. But you started this whole chain of comments because you couldn't read…

      • Opps somehow i didnt get the notification and just read the debacle!

They have 4 floors of fabrics for different budgets and I'll usually head straight to the tailor the day I land or the next day. Spend a couple of hours picking materials and designs from buttons, type of cuffs, lining of the coat etc and get measured. From memory, you'll go back on the 3rd day for a fitting and it should be ready for collection or delivered to your hotel on the 4th or 5th day. If it's your 1st time there, you'll probably go back again to collect and try everything to ensure there's no issues.

My suit for $500 was made this year and I picked a cheaper cotton/wool blend so it doesn't have to be dry cleaned as I don't wear suits to work. Splurged on Italian cotton for shirts and got some cotton/wool blend business pants so they can be washed in the washing machine.

A fren, who's an expat in Bangkok, recommended this tailor and you'll see a wall full of pictures, signed xmas cards etc from Ambassadors. expats and I assume celebrities and VIPs. Not that it matters to me who goes there but I'm happy with their tailoring, price I paid over the past 10 years and the quality.
