    Suit up!

    • +9

Barney would never buy trash suits from these guys drop shipped from vietnam

      • +31

Couldn't agree more. Spend that money on flights to Vietnam and get yourself an excellent suit there

        • +1

          Could be cheaper :P

        • +1

But then you get fat in Vietnam and no longer fit the suit(s).

          • @Munki: Get it made in the last 2 days of your trip. Bring back that fat and still nicer fitting suits.

          • @Munki: s-excer-size will make you fit

        • +1

Considering this as a serious idea as I have a south-east Asia trip coming up. Any ideas on where to start looking? Or how much a made-to-measure suit might cost in Vietnam?

      • Do you recommend any other suit places ? I am looking for a wedding suit was about to go here but getting mixed reviews

        • +1

I don't have recommendation sorry but just be aware these guys will take your measurements send to Vietnam and then drop ship u the suit and making massive margins.

Are you the one getting married or just a grooms men/guest?

        • +2

If you don't need to make a fit suit, I am a huge fan of MJ Bale. You can get some good bargains there.

          • @abs898: I really like MJ bale too , but whenever I triy in their smaller size (36) it still looks big. Maybe I am just too skinny XD

            • @warmmilktea: You have to stick to their fitted range; that's what I do.

            • +2

@warmmilktea: Drink more milk tea and you'll be fine

Body shape plays a big part into whether off-the-rack suits fit well or not. Thinner is usually better, hence why catwalk models are slim

                  @rumblytangara:

                  WTF?

Which part didn't you understand? Use your words.

If I had to guess, it looks like you don't understand that thinner people look better than fat people? Is that news to you?

                  • @1st-Amendment: Use paragraphs.

You were conflating two entirely separate issues- whether off the rack clothes fit the average person, and what body shapes people find appealing.

Your average suit is not built for a rail thin catwalk model, they're made for your average person. I'm skinny AF and as a result, every suit that has ever fit me was bespoke. Even MTM suits don't fit me.

                    • @rumblytangara:

                      Use paragraphs.

Oh you were confounded by the lack of a carriage return? Interesting.

You were conflating two entirely separate issues-

Nope, they are the same issue… Slim is usually good for off-the-rack fit.

whether off the rack clothes fit the average person, and what body shapes people find appealing.

Now that you've used your words I can help clear up where you went wrong. The part you missed was when I used the word 'usually'. This means not always.

Having actually worked in the fashion industry, I can tell you that most designer clothes are designed for skinny people, then scaled up for some larger sizes which is why they never quite work the same on fatties. A friends of mine is what they call a 'size-fit model' Which means she has the right shape (ie slim) that everything looks good on. She can walk into almost any (designer) store and almost everything fits and looks great. This may not be the case at K-mart or Big W, But I figure we're talking about quality stuff here.

                      I'm skinny AF

I also used to live in Hong Kong where some dudes are literally 45kg and still had nice clothes. So they do exist.

                • @rumblytangara: there are certain sizes that are used on catwalks , in younger days i used to get cheap valentino, feraud etc after they were used on cat walks as i was same height and body build as a model …. those days are gone, now i’m a 104

            • @warmmilktea: when i try on 104R it looks too small ….

          • @abs898: This, buy one with a decent fit to start with then get it tailored.

        • I got my wedding suit at instichu 5 years ago and it's great. I paid a bit less than a grand and the quality is great.

Sure can prob get the same quality in Vietnam for $250 but…. Yeah. If you wanna just get measured locally and pick and order instead of flying to Vietnam I'd recommend them.

Edit: definitely go instore to get measured up and select fabrics.

          @warmmilktea

Have you considered hiring one seeing as you'll (hopefully) only wear it the once? They can do some temporary alterations to ensure that you don't have that baggy trouser legs look and so on.

          And congrats!

          • @RichardMelbourne: I have looked at some, I’m from Melbourne and I’m quite short (170cm) and most jackets looks so big on me.

            • @warmmilktea: A good suit hire place will have jackets to fit properly, tall and short people - I don't know any places to recommend, though - sorry (although I'm Melbourne too).

        • +3

Do you recommend any other suit places ?

Only recommendation is that you get what you pay for, and a proper tailor made suit requires multiple fitting sessions with the suitably experienced tailor and this costs money. a single measure and drop ship isn't going to cut it.
You might be lucky and have a body shape that fits close enough to rack sizes, but if not, prepare to pay for quality tailoring.

        • +1

I went with Brent Wilson (in Sydney) but I believe they also have presence in Melbourne. Really happy with the outcome and the work they did. Only one adjustment needed (make the vest a bit broader at the chest). The pants and jacket were perfect.

I didnt have a great experience with Institchu (got shirts made). It took almost 4 adjustments before they got it about right. I ended up buying shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt as my backup, and they ended up fitting better!

As for suit hire vs have a suit made, well…it depends on your budget and style, but I'd say if you have the funds, get a suit made, but have it be one that you can use again.

        • If you're in the Canberra region, Roger Bartholomew in the CBD offers amazing service. I got my wedding suit from there - They were amazingly patient through my indecisiveness, they gave me a beer, and even offered me a whiskey.

  • Seems like a good deal, but I'm glad my suit wearing days are over

Did you upload yourself to the mainframe?

      • yessir. jacked into cyberspace

    • I've heard you can get suits that are really comfortable, that feel like wearing pyjamas. I wouldn't know, my suit wearing days are never going to begin.

      • +2

        You are talking about suitjamas

        • You got me curious, I had a look at their website. Looks awesome https://www.renownedsuitpajamas.com/ - shame the store is giving me a 404 error lol. I wonder how professional and lifelike they look in reality if you taking them in to work. They have classic looking ones, that look less shiny and Hugh Heffner

I thought my suit wearing days were over but then realised I need one to be burried in that fits …. problem is the cemetery i have a plot in , outside the cemetery the neighbourhood has declined , have the best plot in the worst street.

personally not the best experience, the suit is made in China and a button fell off during a ceremony lol

    • +4

they completely cooked the measurements for one of my mates' wedding lol

      • OMG! That's terrible.

        • Yeh so luckily they planed for this and got them to redo everything but man it was stressful af

      • +1

Yep completely messed up multiple suits for a wedding including one whose fly wouldn't zip. Friend's husband didn't believe us and went with them, they also screwed up his and his groomsmen's suits.

        Do not recommend.

      • Did you get a refund

        • +1

They have a pretty bad refund policy, and it doesnt help if you're pressed for time needing something like say for a wedding.

      • buttons do come if you need to breath in to button up and then exhale …

  • Been wanting to get a tailor made suit as I am graduating soon. Would they be a good company to get suits from? Or where else would offer tailor made suits around this price range?

    • +2

Does it have to be tailor-made? Buy wool suit from Bale or SuitShop, and take it to a renowned local tailor.

      • Nah, it doesn’t, I am just not very familiar with buying suits so thought a tailor made one would fit the best, I didn’t think of buying one and getting it tailored. But thanks, I’ll keep that in mind

        • +2

IMO you'll get better value this way unless you're open to traveling abroad for tailor-made.

        • +3

If you have a fairly standard bodyshape, find something that fits off the rack and maybe have it adjusted a bit.

Custom suits are for people who are harder to fit- they are not necessarily 'better quality.' And they can be a lot of hassle- e.g. you should have at least two separate fitting sessions and not simply be measured up in 5 minutes the first time you walk into a store.

          • @rumblytangara: Ah, I was under the impression that custom suits were better quality, stitching and everything. I was open to investing some time and get it properly measured to fit me (slim build) compared to just getting one off the shelf.

      • +1

Peter Jackson is also similar quality to MJ Bale

    • +1

Before you try this, go to an oxford shop when they are on sale and see if they fit - they end up being under $300 a suit when on sale if you get 2, are made with nice cloth (super 100 or 120 from italy that wears nicely for a couple of years at least) and might just fit you nicely off the rack.
I am an old office worker with Anthony Squires, Canali and Oxford suits in my current rotation and the Oxford ones compare very well with the others which are significantly more expensive.

      • Oxford DFO used to have good bargains but not lately. Their prices have gone up more than the usual 25% covid tax.

      • Ok will keep that in mind and maybe have a browse thank-you!

    • for this price and you are graduating also might need another suit for work later, give them a go. I wouldn't trust yourself providing measurements to them so if there's a local shop, go in.

      • Yes graduating & for work hence why I was thinking 2 suits for this deal seemed good and could have a rotation for an office job.

    • Check out MJ bale

    • Graduating from what? If it's a one off suit, just get it from MJ Bale (Wool) or even cheaper at Peter Jackson which is mostly polyester I think. IF you are graduating in Summer, maybe consider a linen suit although will look more chillaxed.

      • Nah I would rather use it in the future maybe. Wanted something with a nicer quality fabric/fit. Not sure how good they would be if it’s from some sweatshop in Vietnam as mentioned above :/

        • +1

If you want a nice suit, what you should look for is, custom made, full canvas (non fused), italian or English wool fabric, and made exactly the way you want it to fit.

After that, just make sure you never get old or put on weight as it won't fit anymore.

Vietnamese sweatshops make good fit suits but they are lower quality fabrics, fused canvas. I have personally have these made and they last a long time as they are polyester!

      • +1

IF you are graduating in Summer, maybe consider a linen suit although will look more chillaxed.

        Don't get a linen suit.

It will wrinkle like a mofo and only ever be suitable for very casual wear (and who wears a suit for casual wear in the summertime?)

        • Dude, these days very few Linen suits are pure linen. It's always a blend and they are relatively resistant to wrinkles. But I agree with you on principle though.

        • I’ve got one that’s a linen/silk/wool blend.

          It’s soooooo soft.

    • +1

Don't get an expensive first suit. I put on about 5kg in my first year of work because I went to spending so much time behind a desk rather than running around campus.

Plus unless you want to be "that guy" who spends a fortune on RM williams and suits and wears it every day, odds are you'll be in CT shirts and iron free machine washable pants soon enough.

      • +1

Only 5kg? You are doing well.

      • Yeh I get what you mean, I will see, I don’t mind wearing suits (have 1 black cheap one from Peter Jackson) and will hopefully be able to keep in shape, but just wanted something even more comfortable and I guess dress to impress for future job interviews etcetc

    • Which state are you in?

      • Vic, not sure if you’re asking to see if there are actual tailor shops to go into? But seems like there’s 3 for me and apparently Armadale had really good reviews on google.

        • I was just going to make some recommendations based on your location. I'm in Melbourne and know the suiting scene here fairly well — I tend to recommend (based on my own current rotation) P Johnson, Oscar Hunt, Adriano Carbone, and Modern Classic, each having their different speciality and price range.

I don't know anything about what you're graduating from or your circumstances etc etc, but I would strongly recommend getting just one suit made at first. Better to have one well-fitting, versatile suit that will last you years than to buy two suits that don't hit the mark.

For anyone buying a first suit, I would suggest Oscar Hunt (entry-level range, standard 'workhorse' cloth). But note you'll just be able to get one MTM suit at this price, perhaps with a second trouser if you can stretch the budget. They'll also adjust the suit as needed if you add/lose 5kg weight in future. Somewhere like Oscar Hunt will also be very good at helping you pick the right suit for your industry, and everyone working there has the requisite taste level too.

If you want other suggestions please let me know. Suiting a passion of mine.

  • Do both suits have to be the same size?

  • +2

I thought Institchu was a no go due to their quality, anyone have any experience?

    • yeah theyre a bit rubbish

    • It is a classic "you get what you pay for".

  • What's wrong with $30 target suits?

  • +1

Have used these guys a number of times, with mixed results initially but now perfect every time. Tip is to get them to do the measuring up at one of their showrooms. They have access to more measurement dimensions and also can work off standard sized suits in store that they pin up so you can see what you’ll get and also ask for the sizing tweaks you would like.

    • Could you elaborate more on bad experience? Did they do the right thing by you or did you just have to suck it up?

I used to get custom suit with two trousers from Vietnam (had to go in person) for A$300 each. The material however is definitely not wool. It's polyester with fused full canvas which can wrinkles after about 5 years. Hard wearing though. I am sure inflation has made prices higher over the year.

      • +1

Did they do the right thing

Yes absolutely, if you’re unhappy with the fit they will remake it for you for free. Problem is only really the delay in the remake.

  • +2

Measure up, send it to China and hope they get it right.. had a bad experience with them and went to MJ Bale instead

    • +2

To be fair, a lot of other 'higher end' and priced MTM suit shops do the same. The key is, the person/company fitting you, and, the QC with the factory/tailor overseas.

  • Perhaps this company be renamed InSHITsuit ??

    Any votes of confidence?

Went to these guys in Perth for all suits in the bridal party 3 months in advance. One suit arrives 3 weeks before the wedding to try on, completely wrong colour…. (was meant to be sage green, got tan) have to get a new one express made to arrive in time for the wedding, correct material/colour is out of stock and cant be ordered in time, so have to go for incorrect shade. Receive the replacement suit couple days before wedding, no time to have any further alterations done if it were incorrectly fitting, spend the next 2 months going back and forth with support to get reimbursed, best they end up doing is $400 back on ~$1200 suit (which they forget to send for a month) from a total order of what would've been about 8 suits and $5000, which did not feel like adequate compensation (considering its the wrong colour, couldn't really get alterations done prior to wedding). If time weren't a factor I would have refunded the suit at the time and gone elsewhere. Rest of the suits in the bridal part were good enough, with them being able to alter any problems prior to the wedding.

    TL;DR Not a fan, YMMV.

    • THeir name has been changed to InSHITsuit.
