Sony store is back ordered (estimated 21June) , depending from when it is shipped it may not qualify for the Sony cashback (exp 30June24)

George's Camera has some good prices as well
    85mm 1.8 - $532 (before cashbacks)

    50mm 1.4 - $1517

    • Had a chat with Sony staff on live chat and been told to put the order in asap to secure an allotment on the next shipment to qualify for cashback.

And yes price on 85mm F1.8 is awesome. I got one myself last week!

      • Hi
What do you mean by "qualify for cashback"?

My understanding is as long as you order during the cashback promo period, it qualifies the cashback.

The time the cashback expires: Jun 23, 2024, 11:59:00 PM.

It doesn't look at the shipment date.

        Am I right?
        Thanks

Reading through Terms and Conditions of the promotion on Sony website, they do not specify time of the order or time of delivery, just mentioned the time of promotion and the purchase must be made from participating retailers.
          Check out clauses 3 & 4 https://promo.sonyanz.com/redemptions/sony-australia-bonus-c…

You can double check with Sony to confirm.

        • They produce the invoice once it is shipped

Just to clarify distinction between Cashrewards cashback vs Sony Cashback.

Cashrewards cashback sure, but for you to qualify sony cashback ($150) - this must be shipped by 30 June 2024. If you price match + buy from Sony store. Sony only generates the invoice only once its shipped and the date on invoice = shipping date.

Sony cashback requires invoice date to be < 30 June 2024. You then have whole of July to make a claim but you must have an invoice dated before or on 30 June 2024.

          • @lawyerz: Just contact Sony and got confirmation as long as the order is placed before 30 June 2024 you will be eligible for cashback. And you have until 28 July 2024 to submit your claim.
Also checked on my order which was placed today that it will be likely to shipped on 26 June 2024.

@greywolfa: if it ships on 26th june, no probs, but I'm really not sure about the first bit.

This user says otherwise, and I can confirm the invoice date is only updated based on shipping date.

Well either way, Sony has a 30-day return policy if it comes down to that.

            • @greywolfa: Sony chat is not the same as the one that manage the promotion. If the invoice date is from July then you might have issues.

    • That is an incredible deal for the 85mm f1.8. I snagged a Rokinon (ie Samyang) 75mm f1.8 yesterday for $385 (got the last one, price back up to $500 now) and personally I place a bigger premium than most on its lower weight and bulk, but I was pretty tempted!

  • I just paid $1305.09 (after all cashback) last week

  • My cashback didn't track for my 85mm price match last week…

    • +2

I've had this 3 separate times with Sony where both Cashrewards and Shopback didn't track for both price matched and non-price matched items. All 3 times I raised a manual claim and all 3 was approved if that will lessen your anxiety abit. My purchase last week was the first time Sony has ever tracked for me.

      • Out of curiosity, how did you find out that neither of the big two tracked? Did you buy the same item twice, each with a different cashback company? (don't laugh, I've done that before somehow)

        • +1

nope. i was changing to Sony camera systems so I had multiple purchases to buy. new camera and a few lenses so multiple very large purchases. I just went with whichever had the upsized cashback on sony at the time - sometimes that's cashrewards (like now at 12%) and sometimes its shopback. so its was over different time periods as well.

The untracked cashback was hundreds of dollars each so I was anxious it wouldn't be approved. Glad it did in the end without any issues.

  • This may not apply to lenses purchased directly, but I bought mine from an official retailer. The claim process required me to upload a photo of the lens's serial number (S/N). If the lens was not in stock at the retailer and the estimated time of arrival was after the claims closing period (July 28), I would not have been able to file a claim.

    • this is correct - you need the lens by end July in your hands, and for orders from Sony Store, it has to be SHIPPED by 30th June 2024 as they only generate the invoice on shipping date.

  • oh shit… bought it for 1599 last week…

How is Sony backordered already??! They were backordered during the Georges deal then they got a shipment in (and mine shipped and I received it), and a few days later, they're backordered again?

Just a reminder for Sony store that they must ship the item by 30 June 2024 for you to claim $150 sony cashback as the invoice date = shipping date. You then have whole of July to make the claim.

If they haven't shipped by then, up to you to consider cancelling your order or be fine missing out on the $150 sony cashback. the 12% cashrewards cashback would still apply.

  • Wondering if I should even upgrade from my lightweight 35mm 1.8.. I tend to value weight and compactness…. but also I want 1.4… what do I do!!!!??

    • +1

Probably not if you already have the 1.8

Everytime I've done something similar in the past, it hadn't blown me away.

      • Yeh I just looked at reviews and seems 35mm 1.8 seems to hold its own, especially for what I value in weight and portability without too much compromise in low light capability.

        • +1

I wouldn’t go for the 1.4 if I had already owned the 1.8. For the value per dollar, size and weight, I think 1.8 is pretty solid.

  • Dumb question, but if I never take portrait photos or photos of people (architecture, scenery, buildings etc) - what is the difference between the 35/50/85 - and which is best for those kind of photos?

    • +4

Not a dumb question, but a very broad one. 35/50/85 is just the field of view (how zoomed in you are). The "typical" use case is above 50 for portraits, less than 50 for travel, street, and even lower for architecture for wide wide shots.

Your smartphone is probably arpund 28-30 for the default lens.

Even though that's typical, it's not a rule, and you can easily shoot architecture at 85 the same way you can shoot portraits on 35. There are some effects that make shooting portraits more flattering at the longer end i.e. compression, and also extra background blur (bokeh)

So there is no right or wrong answer to this but just the typical uses.

For architecture & buildings most people go wider.. maybe 24 or even 16.

Thats why a zoom lens like 24-70 f2.8 or 20-70 f4 or 24-105 f4, 28-75 f2.8 kinda covers most use cases and is pretty popular, but tradeoffs is usually size, weight, price.

      • Thank you that's great. Currently i'm looking at getting a Tamron 28-200 f/2.8, so that'll be my zoom lens, i'm wondering what kind of prime lens to add to my arsenal, so to speak, when i do travel - it'll probably be a 2 lens max kit.

        • With this beast of a super zoom (Tamron 28-200 f/2.8 to f5.6), I'm not even sure you need a 2nd lens, unless you intentionally want a smaller carry for the day. What camera are you using it with?

          • @lawyerz: A7 iv. I think maybe a wider lens might be needed, as a prime lens alternative to the zoom.
