The shipping cost kills the deal I’m afraid. Everywhere else have free shipping over a certain spend, but not biltong.com.au, so I go elsewhere now. They need to get with the times of online shopping!

    • $7.99 express post is worth it compared to the free shipping elsewhere that's usually something slow like Aramex or Sendle.

That's a no brainer. A tiny bit more for better.

      • Not that I’m complaining, but it takes about a week for them to be shipped from experience, express is really just to make sure they don’t expire on the way due to storage conditions, not something to be bragged about.

I regret the shipping cost is never $0; in fact, shipping is more expensive than ever.
Those websites that offer free shipping are building the shipping cost into the price.

        Yeah you aren't wrong.

I shipped my work laptop (<1kg) from within VIC to VIC and it was $20 or $40 with insurance.

And I already had the padded bag and packaging before I went in!!

    • You ALWAYS pay for shipping somehow. It's never free.

  • $68 for 450 g is a joke, sorry

    • Ummm 30% of $67.99 is $47.60 and if you think that's still too expensive for wagyu beef jerky feel free to link cheaper.

    Prices are very high!

I normally buy from 4Hunters or Steyn's Biltong, both charge around $55/Kg, $28/500g or $13.75 for 250g bags from Steyns with free shipping for orders over $100!

4 Hunters still charge shipping but with a discount code you can help cover some of the additional costs and is also far better priced!

It seems biltong.com.au is almost double the price!

Sorry would like to give it a try but not at that price difference being close to $100/Kg + freight…

    • Prices very high seems like an exaggeration. 950g at 15% off of regular Biltong is $69.70 compared to $55/kg at 4hunters. Certainly higher but not very high. Very high would be comparing what's sold at supermarkets like Jack Links.

      • $81.99 / 950g regular price vs $55/kg every day price seems substantial…

For example lets include fright as well and do the maths to Steyns that offer free freight on orders over $100….

Steyns Biltong - Every Day Price!
        - 2x 1Kg bags (2Kg's) of Biltong delivered for $110
        - 8x 250g bags (2Kg's) of Biltong delivered for $110

        Biltong.com.au - EOFY Special deal!
        - 2x 950g bags (1.9Kg) of Biltong for $163.98 - 15% = $139.38 + 7.99 shipping = $147.37 (equates to $155.13 in 2Kg terms) - 40% higher cost!
        - 8x 225g bags (1.9Kg) of Biltong for $175.92 - 15% = $149.53 + 7.99 shipping = $157.52 (equates to $165.81 in 2Kg terms) - 51% higher cost!

        Biltong.com.au - Every Day Price!
        - 2x 950g bags (1.9Kg) of Biltong for $163.98 + 7.99 shipping = $171.97 (equates to $181.02 in 2Kg terms) - 65% higher cost!
        - 8x 225g bags (1.9Kg) of Biltong for $175.92 + 7.99 shipping = $183.91 (equates to $193.59 in 2Kg terms) - 76% higher cost!

        • If $55 is "everyday" price then 4hunters are being deceptive and breaking the law with their fake RRP and sale prices. Saying $34.99 is the regular price and $27.99 is the sale price price.

At least Steyns aren't being deceptive.

          • @Clear: Separate issue… prices have not changed much for a while (slightly up/down, some new packaging/sizes..etc) but similar ballpark per Kg and is why I'm calling it their every day price… It's not time limited, no special codes/offers needed..etc..

Regarding the Law I'm no expert but I think they can set the RRP at any price they like and discount, I believe 4 Hunters supply to a range of butchers that do sell their product around the RRP price but you don't need to pay the RRP price if you buy directly from them…

However, back to the original discussion of if my post was an exaggeration,

With regular pricing at 65-76% higher and special EOFY sale prices still 40-51% more expensive I believe my comments are fair.

I'm not saying the product is not good, I've not tried it myself yet! But at approx. 50% higher costs after discounts I won't be trying it any time soon….

            • @Jonc: 4Hunters and Steyn's don't sell Wagyu Beef Jerky, so just because you didn't like one aspect of the bargain, you've given us a neg.

              • @biltong2go: Sorry for the neg but I honestly don't see the deal/bargain as per my cost comparison above hence the neg.

I don't like Jerky and prefer traditional Biltong myself and is why I compared your biltong deal as I'm always happy to try new products but given the significant price variance decided against it. Having to pay around 40-50% more on the discounted price and 65-76% more on regular prices is not what I would consider a bargain…

I can also confirm the 4Hunters 'Wet & Fatty Sticks" selling for $49.99/kg have great marbling (I'm not sure if it's Wagyu though) however I did not use your 'Wagyu' Biltong price in my comparison as it it costs $105.25/kg (excluding shipping) so I used your cheapest Biltong product offered to be fair…

I appreciate your interactions and wish you all the best but hope you manage to find away to offer an even better deal in the future as I love to try out new products but your every day prices I'm sorry to say but I find them rather pricy…

    • You've negged us for the part of the bargain of 15% discount store-wide; but what about the bargain on 30% off wagyu beef jerky?

Furthermore, you're comparing different biltong products from different companies with different cuts of meat and with/without preservatives:

      • Preservatives: 4Hunters and most of the biltong found in butcheries use preservatives. Our biltong and jerky are preservative-free.

      • Cut of meat: We only use "inside"/"topside", which is a more expensive cut than "outside" which other companies use.

      • Freshness: I can't comment on the freshness of these other companies, but with us your biltong is freshly harvested, packaged, and sent by Express Post. Other companies use preservatives and have the biltong sitting on a shelf for a while before dispatch.

      • Spice formula: Most biltong companies, and the biltong found at your local butchers, are all use the same generic imported spice formula with preservatives. Our spice formula is proprietary, made in Australia, and makes our product unique.

Therefore, please keep in mind that just because it's not a bargain to you, doesn't mean it's not a bargain to others.

      • Thanks for the details, I don't think there is anything wrong with preservatives is there? I've always used Vinegar when making Biltong at home but it's perfectly safe and adds a good flavour as well, what does one use in place of a preservative?

Regarding Cut, Freshness and Spice, no issues there, I've not had an issue with tenderness, freshness and spice is always subjective so each to their own but good luck to you and your team.

I was simply stating I did not consider the Biltong prices to be a 'bargain' by any measurements I could see and I still stand by that claim…

It sounds like you are pitching your product as more of a 'premium' priced product… which is fine, but just not sure a 'bargain' website is the best location…

Just my 2 cents worth…. but very good luck to you once again and if others find it a bargain that's perfectly fine, I just wanted to share what I though might be a better 'bargain' for others to consider as well…

        • I appreciate your response and thanks for considering my perspective

There is loads of information about preservatives in biltong and other meats. The worst ones are nitrites and nitrates which have been flagged by the WHO as cancer-causing.
There are others like potassium sorbate that are less controversial.

My issue with your neg is that:

          1) You negged the whole offerring because you considered 2 of our 15 biltong products, namely traditional biltong, as overpriced, despite the main component still being a bargain, namely the wagyu beef jerky at 30% off.
There was no regard to the discount being offered store-wide, including wagyu biltong, biltong snapsticks, dry wors, normal jerky, or wagyu beef jerky.
This discourages OzBargainers from including "collateral" bargains that are not the main emphasis of the bargain
This is also akin to, if someone offers 15% off in JBHifi, I downvote the bargain because 1 of the products at JBHifi is overpriced.

          2) The part that you considered not a bargain was mis-comparing products.
It is akin to if, Lindt or Godiva (fancy chocolate) posted a bargain, you not just complained in a comment, but actually negged the deal because you can get cooking chocolate for much cheaper at Aldi — that's an exaggerated example of what I'm saying.
Having said that, if, to you, cooking chocolate and Lindt taste the same, and you don't care about other aspects such as, say, organic, preservatives, cocoa percentage, sugar content, or flavour profile, etc, then perhaps that's fair. But, then again, others may consider these aspects in the value offering.

Keep in mind that you're welcome to leave comments on a bargain that address specific concerns, but a neg is a downvote on the whole bargain, whereas your criticism was confined to only 2 products that we sell which weren't even the main focus of the bargain.

          • @biltong2go: I was after Biltong, your company name is BILTONG.com.au, I noticed the name and the deal on Biltong which I love…

I simply can't comment on the Jerky side of things as I just don't enjoy it much….

I've noticed you have another company called "Geronimo JERKY" and to be honest if you posted the Jerky deal under that company name I would not have even clicked it… BUT I noticed a Biltong deal and read "Australia's most popular online retailer of biltong" so assumed you must specialise in that, have really good products, volume and in turn prices but I found it not to be the case in terms of the pricing side of things unfortunately. Your product might be fantastic, I'm not saying it's not… I'm simply saying I don't find it a bargain, sorry!

I compared it to other suppliers I use often. I know 4 Hunters have a fantastic meat source of very high quality, I have no idea about Steyns source though… I've actually spoken to 4 Hunters a few times before and they too are very passionate about high quality cuts, meat and natural ingredients in there mix as well…

My down vote I think is fair from the Biltong side seeming as it's the name of your company, clam to be Australia's best Biltong and a deal was included for what appeared to be your core business… Biltong.

It's only a single down vote so I don't think it's a big deal, I'm sure many others that love Jerky will appreciate the deal/offer. I find most people on OzBargain will read the comments and see my neg is regarding the Biltong but if they are not interested in that will disregard it anyway…

I accept the Jerky could have been a fantastic price/deal, I simply don't know and is why I have not commented on the Jerky product at all, I'm sure others that have tried it or know it well might comment…

All the best to you and your team!
