+1 don't ever update the firmware for any printer.
It will not be to your benefit if you like to use generic toner

    • I have stopped updating my firmware for over a year now (its set to manual) but the toners seen to have a self destruct in built lol and i think it's power related

I bought the 3 replacement toners during COVID then a power outage (probably two months ago) took the cyan, a sparky doing work (last week) and i had to turn the house off took the Magenta!!!!!!

So i think i need to power off the unit so it's not a random power cut (from the printers perspective).

So annoying because one toner is like $25 and 3 is like $45 but then you get caught in this cycle of replacing individuals grrrrrr

And legit toners are ridiculously expensive so my next legit out of toner, I'll save the chip!

The generic toners have a battery that runs down if the power goes off. Once the battery in the generic toner cartridge goes flat, the printer will not recognise the chip.
To fix it, replace the generic toner chip with the chip from the original sample toner (which does not have a battery) and press the toner reset switch on the printer.
If using a generic toner (which has a battery in the toner chip), always keep the printer on standby and don't turn off the printer at the power point.

        • Awesome info! I thought the chip just gets shorted or can't survive the power outage but this makes much better sense, thanks 👍

I used to be a fan of Brother.

Then I bought another Brother printing product, and tried to get support to make it work as promised. It was like bashing my head against a brick wall. I've given up on ever getting it working. It'll be a cold day in hell, or at least a very very good OzBargain, before I consider buying anything else with a Brother brand name on it.

So good luck. Hope you have a better experience with the company's products that I did.

    • to get support to make it work as promised.

What actually didn't work? Software or hardware?

      oh brother!

I had the same issue with Brother's support. My MFC-L3770 has banding in solid colours. Brother claims this is "normal".

Really wish Fuji-Xerox didn't abandon sub $1k market. My old C1190FS and C525A gave much better quality prints than my current Brother.

        Fuji-Xerox , 8 years and thousands of prints . Windows 11 broke it . Was a sad day .

        • +1

I've never tried it myself, but you could look into something like a raspberry pi print server. You'll have the added bonus of the printer being network connected.

          • @garbage man: thanks for the suggestion but it's long gone to land fill .

    • What was the actual problem? I have determined a hell of a long time ago to never bother with the Brother software or drivers at all, I have a mono laser printer now that I have been using the Windows drivers for last few years and use the standard Microsoft "scan" app within the app store and works great!

The Brother software with wireless drivers, scan apps etc all never work and instead installs all this bloatware. Default drivers and I can even print from my iPhone via wireless too.

      • So you are able to print and scan wirelessly from a W11 PC / laptop?

I have always assumed that I needed the Brother set of apps to be able to use the printer as expected. The print quality, especially with images, often leaves a lot to be desired. The wife would usually blame the printer being rubbish or the fact that it's compatible toner (which I've tried to say isn't the case).

I use Android and use the Brother app for that which works ok. Presumably I could dump that as well though?

        • +1

Yep. Sure can. The default windows 11 drivers for it allows me to print and scan wirelessly. I literally setup a new computer recently and it just worked on a new windows 11 install.

There’s no native scan in windows 11 hence the need to use the Microsoft Scan app from store. To me printing is printing so couldn’t tell any noticeable difference.

Only limitations I found. You need to select scan from app. The scan button on printer won’t recognise pc since no brother app.

        • Install the Brother software is better with scanning.

Because Windows will auto detect the printer on the network, normally I will remove it from Windows first before I install the Brother software.

If anyone have software issue, you can try download the Brother uninstall app, fully remove the software first before reinstall.

anyother deal with only printer and scanner? i have no use of fax

    • When you think about it, a fax machine is just a is just a less useful printer/scanner combo unit. Which is to say it's pretty darn rare for a printer/scanner unit to not have fax functionality because it barely adds to the cost of the unit.

Heck, printer/scanners without a built-in fax feature are just a single fax program on the computer away from being a fax machine.

      • I don't even need a scanner.
Adobe scan app on phone is so much easier.
For the few documents that need scanning.

  • Thanks OP.

Price matched with The Good Guys to use some gift cards from a previous deal.

    • Tried this with them and they said they couldn't match the price. OW also refused to match it.

      • I bought it at 599 at Office Works and thought that was a good deal, as it was $747 at most places.

It's working well for my needs at home, colour printing, duplex printing and scanning and cheap toner were what I was after.

      • I had to go into store, and they had to get the manager to OK it. This was Gepps Cross in SA if that helps anyone.

When I tried TGG online the best they would do was $560

    • Awesome!
