HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card

Has anyone successfully reapplied for the HSBC Star Alliance card and received the Star Alliance Gold benefits in less 12 months from cancellation of the previous card.

I have gone through the terms and conditions and did not see any mention of a 12-month or 18-month waiting period for new customers to be eligible for this offer.

  • I will be cancelling mine in November with the intention of reapplying next year July. Will let you know if it works. I know still a long time.

    • I'm in the same boat- first year coming up in Nov (planning to cancel, but undecided yet if will reapply later)

      • Having travelled 4x in the last 12 months (3x by compulsion), I think the benefit of Star Alliance Gold is well worth it, even with $450. The problem is, the system is not designed for Gold status earned this way resulting in big detriment.

As an example, if you choose SQ, you will only get 11 mths benefit yet with Air Canada, 1 year at least if not more. But if you choose Air Canada, some airport cannot handle having you flying SQ but using Air Canada perks but still accruing KrisFlyer.

If you are intent on flying SQ, perhaps going Velocity way would be better since you'll be getting SQ perks and if that is the case, then Star Alliance Gold HSBC would not be needed. The problem comes when you decide to travel with other Star Alliance partners such as Air Canada / United / ANA

  • Existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card or customers who have held a HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card within the last 18 months are ineligible for this offer.

Does this mean you need to wait 18 months if you already had the card?

  • +1

Spot on mate! looks like will have to wait 18 months.

    • :( Another 7 months for me then.

  • Could I choose Singapore airlines as my gold status airline (min $4k in 90 days spent), but redeem my points with differen airlines, like Thai and United? or once I select Singapore, all the points will automatically go to Singapore airlines?
