Oof - based on ~43% ABV, the excise tax on these is around $65. Oh and GST of around $8 and not a lot left to make the gins…
Bathtub quality, it seems "gin" (term used loosely) is just a vehicle for booze delivery in this instance. There's no margin for good quality ingredients or botanicals.
I'm not sure exactly the relationship, but the Walter Hill gin (also 3 for $99 from Queensland Distillery) was actually excellent. I ended up buying additional bottles of most of them
You clearly didnt read their website. They have an excise exemption applied.
" Each year, Australian craft distilleries are allowed to sell a limited number of bottles and not pay Excise Duty. We decided to sell them at wholesale price, direct to you and pass on the Duty Free savings."
Given they are trying to flog 500ml bottles of no-name brand liquor for just shy of $75 I doubt they are never not on sale & just rely on selling their excise free allocation online to bump up sales (gullible "gin school" attendees urged to pay full retail at POS). This place is in the middle of the Bris CBD, it caters to tourist & corporate function markets, it's one of several gin merchants that have popped up in the last few years.
I did read that, and it's gobbledygook.
They have the normal excise threshold of $350,000. For spirits, this would be around 3,500 litres of alcohol (LAL), so this distillery may be below the threshold. As we're coming up to 30 June, this campaign may be about selling as much stock as possible, as the threshold restarts on 1 July.
I was trying to make a semi political point - +100c LAL is amongst the highest anywhere.
