      • The $5 bank bonus on westpac/st george/bom/BSA with $120 spend gets you slightly more discount.

      • Are egift cards instant delivery?

        • +1

Sold by Woolies? Pretty much instant.

    • How do we get the 10% off code?

  • is this good enough to be used as a 5G modem?

    • +4

Yup, its my dedicated internet modem atm

though if you want can get the G54 for $199 in 4days if you're using it only as a modem mainly

      • +3

        $186.74 with eBay Plus Mobileciti

        • strange, was physically in their store ~4 hours before your comment, asked to match big W's $180 and was told "can't do lower than $223 or we'll lose money".
bit inconvenient, would have bought on the spot if offered $187.

not mad tho, had a unusual situation and they made a decent effort to try help out.

    • will run warm so life expectancy won't be the same as a phone normally used.

      • maybe worth getting one of those clip on heatsink/fans designed for people that game on their phone?

      • +2

Depends if you're hotspotting. or using as usb tether.
I got it as usb tether to my pc and its cool af

You can get full speed on Usb tether, where as hot-spotting is much slower speeds where its almost like 4G rather than 5G. Due to the nature of wifi

    • I thought there is a sale on a 5G modem costs like $200 posted here.

    • +2

Caution battery swelling if you're going to keep it plugged in 24/7. Hotspots are also limited to amount of connected devices - 10 devices IIRC.
If you're wanting something more standalone, the Fast 5866t works well. Secondhand around $100.

      • Look for battery charge limit Android apps. They stop charging at a user defined threshold.

        • Can you direct us to such an app because charging (as I understand it) cannot be controlled by an external app. I've had to use an app which alerts me when charging goes above my set percentage &/or below a min figure.

I used old Poco X3 pro and Huawei Mate 10 Pro's as 4g modems on a felix plan for a while, the phones lasted about 6-8 months each before the battery swelled to a level I was uncomfortable to continue using them. I eventually switched to a cheap voda pocket wifi. Seems like battery swelling is a given for this kind of use case.

      • +1

… before the battery swelled to a level I was uncomfortable to continue using them.

Were these two phones plugged in 24/7?

      • +2

You are probably going to get an email from Felix pretty soon telling you to stop using the modem or threaten terminating the service.

        • I stopped using them a while back and never got any threatening emails, I'd used them for around half a year at that point, but that was always the fear..

      • battery swelled to a level I was uncomfortable -

You ideally need to put the phones on a smart plug - and keep them around the 30-80%

        Charge then turn off power

  • This or a refurbished Pixel 6 for a very similar cost?

  • Is it correct that G84 doesn't have esim?

    • I believe so. I am looking for a midrange phone with eSim and good camera, good battery, 3.5mm audio jack, microSD card slot for $1K or under but haven’t found any

      • +1

        Xperia 10 vi

        • Thanks for the suggestion. Just had a look. While it ticks my boxes and strong battery, camera was not good and only 1 OS upgrade. I might look at Samsung A55 or Pixel 8a

    • +2

Correct - the G54 however does have esim

      • +5

Should be the other way around

  • I keep seriously considering this to replace my Pixel 7. Someone convince me otherwise! I do love call screening on the Pixel, and presumably a handful of other things it does well. But I don't know. Just love this bargain :-)

    • +2

If you've ever taken a photo with your current phone, you'll regret it.

Pixel 5 user, tried the G84, photos were grainy and horrible, slow to process, very average quality. The "50MP" is actually 12.5MP with some software wankery to upscale it 4x or something. The photos were very average coming from a Pixel phone.

      • Very good to know. I may take one photo or a thousand here or there.

      • +1

reaffirming what samba said. P4a user here and the G84 is night and day. The light seems to play a big part. I used to have a G51 as well and it took better photos than the G84 - and it did the same pixel binning thing (50MP sensor downscaled to 12.5MP) as it seems to be common feature nowadays.

They've murdered the G84. that said, I've only just had time to take it out of the box, software updates might change things, but I doubt it. Motorola push these things out the door every six months, whilst not a bad thing, just means don't expect much software support.

Phone does have its strong points tho - it's just the camera isn't one of them IMO

  • Seems like its ozb fav mobile phone.. im almost convinced but considering g54 too (almost half price), give me some good reasons or user experience (not just spec) to get g84 over g54?

    • We have two G54s and I love them personally. I'm almost jealous as the kids get to play Minecraft on them more smoothly than my Pixel 7 does (at way more cost). No personal experience with the G84 but as samba points out above, it has terrible photo processing quality, so that may factor in to the decision for you too.

      • Thanks! So the G54 also has the same terrible photo quality/camera?
That would be a deal killer for me as i love light travel

        • You know… I've barely taken a photo on them, but the kids occasionally do and I've attributed most bad shits to their inability to hold still 😂 so can't confirm. I'll grab one and test.

          • @JownehFixIT: Yeah the Pixel shots are clearly better, especially in low light. https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZneXShqTeYakucj76

Believe it or not, these were taken from about the same position, so the angle of the 1x on the Pixel is a bit nicer/captures a bit more too. And definitely lets more light in to the shot. Plenty more detail in the Pixel shot.

  • So is the G84 camera no better than the 54?
