    Wrong junkies

    • What's the joke here? Is this not a desirable gym franchise?

      • Yes and yes

      • +1

        Cheap 'n' nasty.
Lots of equipment, poorly maintained, dirty (toilets horrible!), seedy characters are standard. Their gyms are routinely placed in lower socio economic areas.
You probably get the picture. You get what you pay for like anything in life.

derrimut derrimut is so packed holyshit

    • +7

Sir that's a feature at this gym as you'll have more spotters.

    • Yeah C.S is actually terrible now. 3 months ago it was manageable but now its like Vic Market with the amount of people walking in/out and throughout.

      • yeah, its the new norm to park at Bunnings just to walk to CS derrimut now.

  • +12

At this rate it’ll be $100 with the admin fee soon and they’ll have to introduce a ticket queuing machine for each station

    • -2

Nah, 88 is Chinese lucky number 🍀

As someone who has been going to Derrimut for the last few months, unless you are someone who only goes at very off-peak hours, don't bother. While the equipment is great, it is so packed that there is frequently no parking spaces, and until 9pm on most weekdays, you literally have to wait in a queue.

    • Sounds like my experience at goodlife back in the day

    • I've been going for a few months as well. Usually arrive between 2pm-4pm. Sure it's busy, but don't have too much issue getting my workout done in a timely fashion

    • Clarification Edit: From the end of workday until 9pm*
      [VIC]

    • I'm likely to go between 1PM-5PM - hope it works out.

      • around 12pm-2pm would be quiet afterwards idk

    • +1

What is 'very off peak'? People's anecdotes about peak times are funny. Maybe, here's a thought, don't go at peak hour?

  • whats the gym like at 530 - 6am at Braybrook?

    • +1

according to the graph on google, not very busy

      • generally fridays tend to be quite, but some first hand exp would be great

        • -1

generally fridays tend to be quite,

          quite what ?

          • +1

            @jv: quite quiet

    • +3

Mate goes there during that time. Not super busy but still active. It's mostly tradies that time

    • My view differs, it's quite busy and you will generally have to wait for a machine. Good luck on 1 of the 3 barbell flat benches. The dumbbell area is choka-filled.
There's also an increase of broken machines over the past year, coupled with more members = reduced supply + higher demand.

What's the deal with the reduced hours for the Macgregor, QLD gym? Someone told me they're closing down soon but unsure how reliable that info is. Not sure I would bother with a 1 year membership if that's the case.

    • Want to know as well as this is the closest branch to me.

  • +4

Is this ending like New Life Fitness in Woodville (SA)? Reducing yearly membership and pushing it, and then suddenly going into administration.

    • +1

I used to suspect the same thing when I used to go to Derrimut like 10+ years ago - however nothing has eventuated. For the record, they have always had wild deals like this.

  • Does anyone go lunch time oakleigh? Is it crazy busy?

    • +2

      Its not busy at all.
      I go between 11 and 2.

  • +1

I wonder how many people will go a few times and then just give up due to their gyms being insanely overcrowded (in part due to their very low membership fees).

    • I know of a few people who signed up, went once, and then not again

      • +2

You just referenced 2/3 of all gym members.

  • -3

Got a sneaky suspicion they might close by end of the year the way they keep making prices lower and lower

    • I don't think so - they have always run continuous sales. In North of Adelaide, they've opened one and building two more (including the largest one ever in the old Holden's factory) within kms of each other.

      • Other gyms will close but not Derrimut.

  • does the basketball court get used?

    • Mine don't got one rip

    • The basketball court at Oakleigh, the net that surrounds the court, is too low.. so you basically need to shoot flat

    New & Expired Members Only

The expired members will be rolling in their graves…

  • Great Gym, I was on the yearly specials while living in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Shame the deal isn't running in WA

  • +1

Those gyms have the worst smells ive ever experienced

  • Its busiest in the afternoon on Monday and Tuesday (i.e. worse days to go) but starts getting less busy after Wednesday

    • +1

All gyms have the same pattern

  • +1

man they need to chill with these sales. so many (profanity) people at the gym now, even at 10pm difficult to get a workout in.

Business is business i get it… but ew.

  • +3

$88 admin fee for something that is almost certainly a two second automated computer sequence.

  • My local has a sauna. Health clubs near me charge through the nose for sauna so for that alone it's worth it to me.

  • +2

For anyone wanting to go Oakleigh Victoria,

Great gym equipment but as everyone says its busy as fk.
Monday - Thursday (6pm-9pm) is absolutely packed, and if you are by yourself you might be waiting sometime for equipment (ok with friends as you can just chat as you wait)
Dumbbell section is simply not enough and benches for it are tough to get.
Friday (night) /Sat/Sunday great days to go as its quiet throughout most times of the day.

    Few other points
    -Mens toilet smell preety bad
-Be prepared to do some laps to find parking
-Derrimut bar has good protein shakes and acai bowls.
-Sales dont seem to be stopping so i imagine more people to continuously join the gym.
-Nice balance of newbies, gym bro/girls and steroid users
-Bball court is nice, but small (probs just up to freethrow line)

    • girls and steroid users

      🤣🤣🤣

They tren hard anavar give up

  • Nice one! Thanks OP

For those real ones who only gym to get swole and hulk out, consider investing in a home gym. For under $1200, you can purchase a reliable power rack, incline bench and olympic barbell + plate set. Just need a 2 metre x 2 metre space with enough ceiling clearance for Overhead Press. No more commute and no more waiting in line to use the ball sweat drenched equipment. Respect your time and gains, fellows!

    • any recommendations (links)?

      • Power rack: Any Aussie supplier such as gymandfitness is good, provided your power rack has the following: Extended feet, sufficient weight rating and weight plate storage. The power rack feet should be long, horizontal square beams flush with the ground because I am assuming you won't be bolting them down.

Barbells + Plates + Bench: Ebay, no joke. Just make sure the barbell is 7ft with a good weight rating and to pick really strong barbell collars.

Remember to purchase high density foam mats, so you can safely drop your barbell without damaging the floor.

    • What sort of flooring do find works well? Do you buy flooring as well?

      • I was too cheap to buy flooring. All I did was glue together old yoga mats into a sandwich. I deadlift off these two 'sandwiches' while wearing shoes to compensate for the elevation increase. But I am sure you can purchase flooring squares from sites like gymandfitness. Also you will have to perform an incline bench press instead of flat bench press since you won't have a spotter.

        • Oh that’s a thrifty idea thanks!

  • Whats it like at Thomastown at 6:30am?

    • Also keen to know. And what's their heaviest dumbbells? I bench ~220kg so need the big boys.

      • Full rep bar touching chest or half way rep

        • Proper pause touching chest and waiting for press command. For half way reps I use a block of do pin presses
