  • Bargain. I got mine for $270 and thought that was good.

  • +1

No temp gauge, but you can drill a hole and add an aftermarket one.

    • +3

remember the premium ones with temp gauge also have the higher lid

  • Is the new gen 3 model significantly better (or worse) ?

    • -4

3rd gen is better i.e. has a 3 rows burner with an additional row in the middle that makes huge difference.

      • Not sure what q1000 you referred to. Only 2 burners and slightly upgrade exterial + bigger dom.

        • -2

          I am referring to WEBER® Q™+ PREMIUM (Q2800N+)

          https://www.weber.com/AU/en/q-range/weber-q-plus/weber-q-280…

Of course huge difference in price but worth spending for better cooking

          • +3

@OZBsince2018: It's not the gen 3 he was talking about. You are talking about a different tiered product.
Gen 3 baby q is this one https://www.weber.com/AU/en/q-range/baby-q/baby-q-1000n-gas-…

            • @maverickjohn: Yes I am curious about generation 2 vs generation 3 of the baby Weber.
I see the dome is bigger, which may be some help with roasts but I think that is it for differences?

              • +1

@King Tightarse: Had 2, now have 3. 3 is noticeably larger. You can fit the 2000 range trivet in the Gen 3 Baby (though I feel like it messes with temp a bit).

Still getting used to ours. Gauge seems to read hotter than it is vs our old Gen 2.

                • @Banj0: Which do you like cooking with better Banj0?
It's hard rto find many comparisons as its still quite new. One seemed to think the Gen 2 got hotter, which make some sense as teh internal volume would be smaller if the burner is still the same whereas being taller means larger cuts of meat would fit in Gen 3

                  • +2

@King Tightarse: I've only had two cooks in on the 3rd Gen. My initial impression is that it isn't as hot, but the gauge doesn't agree with that assessment! So…it's getting hotter in the top of the lid vs nearer the plate where the roast chook is sitting? Not sure yet. The gauge is in a different spot, and the lid and cooking surface are substantially larger.

I think I will learn its ways and get similar results as we did on our Gen 2 (which meant BBQ chickens the likes of which our family and friends said they'd never tasted better).

I'd probably lean towards the newer one for that 'just a little more' cooking surface and space under the hood. The Gen 1/2 were a nice size though, and I think would take up a little less room in a car boot/wherever! I would prefer to be carrying the Gen 1/2 from car to picnic tables 500m away - though there's not a substantial difference (mainly just the greater volume). Mostly it sits on a BBQ stand at home though, and never gets moved, so I really like the little more cooking area/space.

Regardless of gen…I'd always select one with a gauge in it. Even if they are not accurate across examples, they give you some relative idea of temps on your particular Q.

I will be sure not to walk away with a duck roasting at high temp on this one.

                    • @Banj0: Thanks for that, very useful.
I am thinking that the placement of the gauge on the Gen 3 may have change readings IE the new model sits right at the top where the heat rises above the burners, where as the gen 2 was more side on, so that could make a difference

              • +1

@King Tightarse: From what I could tell the hood is bigger and better material. Seems good but not sure $130 good.

I know the whole weber thing is to close the lid and let the even heat cook, but I find the grill never gets hot enough to do a steak properly. Any tips?

    • -3

3rd gen is better i.e. has a 3 rows burner with an additional row in the middle that makes huge difference.

    • what model have you got? U can drill out the injector / fit a larger diameter one to increase gas flow, it's obviously not a certified mod & should not be done if you don't know what you are doing, plenty on the web about it. People also drill out the holes on the burner tube. Otherwise give it a good 20minutes to get up to full temp before cooking the steak, may also require the gas tube to be removed & cleaned as you can get build up inside & the holes get blocked

      • I have 6yo BabyQ. At some point it started performing below average, Weber sent me a new burner. It did help a bit, but the performance was still poor. I thought to replace the barbie with something else, but realised that if the burner is new, then problem with something else. Disassembled the gas line as much as I could, cleaned everything with electric contacts cleaner. Now it is hot as a space rocket.

        • the weber warranty is excellent, like anything they do need some maintenance over time but they are very simple & easy to look after. They will last for many years, surprises me when you see them being thrown away knowing they don't need much to sort out

      try reverse sear technique https://www.youtube.com/@GugaFoods

      • will try this….been meaning to but when you got hungry mates and kids around you tend to go down the path of least resistance which is just throwing meat straight on the grill

    • +1

      I've always just followed this - https://youtu.be/BtDvFEFiQ5k?si=m4sh9rjMgEA8t6ym

10 mins pre-heat, 4 mins each side. Works perfect on my Baby Q.

    • Best steaks I have ever had were done on our Gen 2 Baby Q. It sure got hot enough.

      Tips…
      - Preheat (I don't put steak on until it's over 200)
      - Let meat get to room temp before cooking (be it Weber, stovetop, or whatever)
      - Lid closed, as you've already pointed out
      - Cut of meat of course makes a difference. 30 secs cook time can make a big difference. Need to dial in. Probe thermometer can be handy.

  • How hard are these to clean? Does the stainless steel burner get clogged with grease?

    • very easy, if after cooking you turn it to full heat & leave running for a while a lot of the grease will burn off & easily brushed off. The burner tube only really gets clogged over time if not cleaned & isn't hard to rectify, they're honestly one of the easiest grills to clean with the grease tray etc

    • Super low maintenance. They take plenty of use and abuse.

When I had mine (i've now upgraded to a bigger Q) a few times when the holes did block, I was able to just use a wire bbq brush to give them a quick scrub which got them going again.

Used it several times a week for about 5 years, before the burners started rusting out a bit. We really needed the bigger size anyway, else could have just spent $40-50 and bought a replacement knockoff burner on ebay and it would have been good for another 5 years of abuse.

      Highly recommended.

  • FYI for anyone thinking of connecting this to the external bayonet of their van/motorhome etc:

    https://www.caravanindustry.com.au/flame-failure-reminder/

    • I think that's what this is about.

      • That’s a lot of money to add to a BBQ that costs just over $200.

        • +1

Sure is. But probably worth it vs explodiness. I'm not worried in 'outdoor' spaces though.

  • That’s a great price - i wanted one of these to chuck in the 4x4 for road trips! Thanks

  • Is this good to cook steak in (about 3-4cm thick)?

    • Doesn’t get anywhere near hot enough tbh

      • Thanks for confirming.

  • Coming in and out of stock. Just ordered, Thanks OP

  • +1

added $20 postage now from free…

    • Yep, you can see from the eBay Listing Revision that 'Postage terms' has been changed a few times since the deal post, which is the reason I expired the deal.

  • Wish the lid was designed to have the fat spatters drain into the BBQ & not outside the BBQ.

It destroyed my auto lite and fat poured out everywhere onto the standing table I had mine on. I do a lot of roasts.
