Are These Two Carplay Devices The Same?

Just after 2nd opinions, wife-person just wants a screen to handle phone call stuff while driving, car is pretty old so not worth a full install.

She spotted this one for $150

https://klevarange.com.au/products/kleva-carplay

I reckon it's the same as this unit on AE for 50 bux?

What say you guys?
Or if either of these are crap can you suggest something along the same lines?

Cheers.

  • Aliexpress direct link without the referral crap: https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006986782487.html

Same mass produced product with Kleva badging mark-up. The entire Kleva store is just rebadging Chinese products for multiple times the price.

  • $199 from Jaycar to just replace the HU, and guarantee it's going to be a better setup

    • Thanks, wouldn't really fit the Mazda 3 dash. pic: http://images.gtcarlot.com/pictures/83123528.jpg

      • This still looks pretty clean

        • They do look good. :)

Not sure it's worth the effort though, car is nearly 20 years old and might get replaced in the next couple of years.

          • @EightImmortals: For a couple of years it's worth it imo. Did it to the mrs car and maybe only got 12-18 months out of it, but was damn handy for her especially with access to google maps

            • @spackbace: Adds a little resale value too. I'd choose a car with a decent CarPlay thing already installed for a few hundred bucks more, all other things being equal. Would save me hours of research and bother learning how to instal it in that car just once.

@spackbace: OK cheers, I'll give it some thought.

@EightImmortals: Suction cup mounts suck (pun intended) they wobble in use and fall off after a while.

My vote is with Spackbace on this one.

            • @Master Bates: What about the mounts that fit over or in or whatever the CD player?

              • @AustriaBargain: I have no experience, but I imagine it will still be janky compared to a properly fitted in dash unit.

                • @Master Bates: Well it would make the unit hover above your dash unit area, like the Tesla, only it'd look even more janky. Might suit something bigger, like a large iPad that wouldn't fit in a small centre dash area anyway.

                  • @AustriaBargain: The problem I foresee is that it will cover other items on the dash, whether it's the vents, AC controls or the entertainment unit itself. They will also have the power and aux cables running all over the shop.

Just better all around to put the effort into an in dash system.

Edit: Just found this on Aliexpress. Not necessarily recommending it, but it's an option with current Ali discount codes.

    • How hard is to DIY? I’m handy but have zero experience in cars electronics. Just came back from autobarn and install cost are >$250
      I’m intending to do a 2010 Yaris.

If you buy the necessary adapters etc, pretty easy. Check the Aerpro site. Just take your time and look up Youtube on how to pull apart your dash

  • Same, even though the brackets differ slightly in the marketing images they appear the same in the Kleva manual.

Itll basically be the same. If you do get one, dont mount it on the widnscreen unless it doesnt block your view. It's illegal and it'd stupid. You need to look where you are going not at your screen.

Check out TEMU for cheaper one

  • Honestly the best money you can spend if you are in your car a lot.

I bought a cheap AliExpress version with wireless CarPlay/Android Auto that came with the wiring harness and all, direct drop in replacement in my VW. The downside is that the screen is a little dull in bright light and the touch is slightly off (although there is a re-calibration that makes it better). Compared to the Pioneer headunit I had in a previous car, it's pretty ordinary, but for ~$225 delivered it's bloody awesome… especially compared to the $1,000+ I would have paid for the headunit + various facia kits + adaptors needed.

Even if you can't get wireless CP/AA worth it.

A quick and dirty search seems to say there are options:
    https://vi.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-wireless-carplay-mazda…

  • The Aliexpress unit has an AUX OUT port at the top, the KEVLAR one has an IR receiver.

  • The rear panel looks identical.
The internals may differ, CPU, RAM?
