  • Been using one for the last 6 months. Solid. Paid a slightly lower price but only included the base model burrs and not the premium "supernova" burrs.

    • wasnt aware there are different models, I thought the base model comes with "Stainless Steel Supernova Burr"?

      • You might be right. Marketing working against them. The top of the line is "hypernova"

There has been a couple of issues with the Varia motor. I would just make sure to contact supplier how they would respond to warranty, whether it would be replacement or referred to varia.

    • gen 1?

      • gen 2

EDIT: The gen1 and gen2 have same motors but gen 2 does have a different gear box but didn't presumably help with premature failure of the motor.

EDIT 2: I would also suggest even the new starseeker grinder E55, with the upcoming aliexpress sale, its fantastic pricing.

I have had some good experiences with the more expensive starseeker edge Plus and comparing to niche zero, its very similar if not has more clarity.

        • What will the e55 cost ?

          • @Kangarookiddd: On ali atm its 322$ without gst but tomorrow they are dropping the price + coupon it would be definitely under 300.

            • @darkkito: Seriously that looks like a good deal, I'm considering it. Curious what it would be like trying to get replacement burrs for though. Being so new hard to find any reviews.

              • @Hipsi: I bought for 270$~ including shipping with the ali express deal. Definitely a very good deal, replacement burrs hardly seems to be the issue but its still very easy, starseeker sells replacement or different coated burrs seperately.

Great looking grinder but a shame about the size of the power brick. Would look horrible in the kitchen

    • You have to get slightly creative to hide the power brick but doable.

  • these are decent for the price.

Df54 is the way to go

    • I got a DF64 gen 2 a few months ago and have been loving it. Only issue is spritzing is required to keep mess down from the static. But very very solid.

      • I even spritz my Niche in the middle of a dry winter. It's fairly normal, I think. Although I do hear that the DF64 is particularly bad due to the way the exit chute is designed.

      • What did you upgrade from (if anything)?

Considering whether to eventually get a DF64 with some SSP burrs as an upgrade from my Specialita..

        • Nothing - I came from a Breville Barista Express and went to a DF64 V2 and Lelit Mara X. Loving this setup.

What advantage would the SSP burrs have over the ones that come with the DF64?

          • @Bog: You'll get a lot more clarity and lose body. SSP MP burrs are generally known to showcase the roast and beans more so you'll taste more of the origin of the beans, you'll also taste the defects too though.

    • Just got my DF54 this week. Can't fault it.

Quiet, almost zero retention and sturdy.

    • Very happy with my ITOP40 (aka Turin SD40)

  • I grind 36g of beans at a time for filter coffee (V60 pour over) and think I’d get frustrated with the small catch cup (30g I believe). Considering the Fellow Ode for this reason. Any thoughts?

    • +1

If you're doing pourover, I think the Fellow Ode might be more suitable. From what I understand, the Varia VS3 is more of an espresso grinder (although it can do pourover grind size as well).

    • Fellow ode is fantastic for filter.

      • At what price should I bite? Currently $550 in most places

        • Cheapest I've seen is ~$500 new for a gen2 ode. You can try out the 2nd market on coffee forums like coffeesnobs.

Alternatively if you can get Timemore 064 sculptor for a similar price, that might be a better option. It's just a nicer version of the Ode in every way.

          • @POSITIVEVIBESONLY: The Timemore 064 is close to $1000. That’s double the price

            • @SirFrankGrimes: Sorry, I was leading to the 2nd hand market is great for buying at the moment for grinders. Lots of people are offloading from wfh/covid days and also selling equipment due to interest rates.

If you look for a filter grinder on forums and willing to buy 2nd hand you can get a bang for you buck.

  • That code dont work

Here15 works but brings total to 480

    • Didn't know the code was targeted, thanks for letting me know.

  • Can someone tell me whats good about a $300+ grinder? Recently got coffee machine and just buying pre ground coffee from IGA. Do want grinder but not sure what to get.

    • Its a can of worms with diminishing returns but essentially the most influential factor for the taste of your coffee are the freshness and quality of your beans combines with the quality of your grinder.

    • Get some freshly ground coffee from a cafe and see if you can notice the taste between fresh coffee and stale coffee from IGA. If you enjoy it you can keep that freshness locked in by buying whole beans and grinding each morning. The entry market grinders are getting better and better, it's a pretty good time to be making coffee at home.

  • Thought I may ask the brains trust here, A mate's auto coffee machine broke so I'm suggesting a few grinders for his new setup. Don't think he'd want to spend much.

    • Sunbeam EMM0500BK $219 (appears to be a new version of my EM0480; built to last)
    • Smart Ginder Pro ($300, $250 used-new)
    • Baratza, Encore ESP 230V $299
    • Used Mazza Super JOlly $150? (maybe harder to find)

Alternatively I could sell EM0480 cheap and get something above if it's any better (besides the noise, I've found a WDT tool helps with most shortcomings). Cheers!

    • The Smart Grinder Pro is a Breville I presume? I have one N while it s good somehow it s a bit inconsistent in dosing department. Same grinding time but weight can vary. Not sure if it s just my noob setup.

      • +1

That's due to grinder retention. You can find a cheap bellow online for around $20, or try spraying the beans a few times prior to grinding to reduce retention and static. I've done both and every time I put 18g in I got exactly 18g out.

        • Or just knock it lol

          • @G-rig: Tried that before and while it did get rid of some retention, there was still at least 1-2g left (maybe I'm doing it wrong). Also felt like I was too rough and wasn't a fan of that kind of workflow.

            • @devisticshash: Meant to say, I leave some beans in the hopper for a few days (ie hopper not empty) so I'm not exactly worried about grams in vs out.
I have been knocking the grinder first now, to get rid of any old grinds though. I grind straight into the portafilter.

I was looking at that Baratza Encore ESP, I don't think it would be any kind of an upgrade over the em0480. Plastic body, smaller burrs (I think) and 70w motor vs 250w in mine. I think would have to spend considerably more for something to be a good upgrade This varia sounds like it would be decent by the look of it. (PS. I noticed a bellows is required as there is quite a bit of static with the VS3, not sure if it comes with one. It is quite, maybe a bit slow). The LAGOM MINI looks good, probably too expensive and hard to find in Australia. The fellow ode G2 actually looks good, but people are saying you can't use it for espresso.
Actually the Eureka Mignon Manual Coffee Grinder is probably best for most people.

    • Mazzer > Encore ESP or SGP (can't go wrong with last 2). Idk much about the Sunbeam can't comment on it.

        • In order of best on the market but that does get reflected in price. And where are you finding Mazzers for $150? Or was there a missing zero somewhere haha.
