Um…. by what mechanism is it measuring these things? Besides taking your weight and stats you enter and just guesstimating?

    • +10

Without looking, I'd wager it's bioelectrical impedance which is notoriously inaccurate.

      • +1

I have one of these scales and it is a piece of junk

Heart rate is totally wrong and inaccurate, PWV almost never gets a reading and half the time I don't get ECG readings…

        save your money…

    $649 seems… excessive

    • +12

      So is my weight. :(

        Loose weight, not money 😁

Might as well get a gym membership for that price

    • Not in 2024. Memberships have doubled over the years.

      • Derrimut still cheap

    From BestBuy Customer Reviews
    • Positive Feedback: One user praised the scale's ability to track multiple metrics like body fat percentage, segmental body composition, ECG, and vascular age, calling it an "impressive smart scale". However, they noted the $399 price is steep.
    • Accuracy: Another user highlighted the scale's accuracy in tracking body composition over time, aligning with professional equipment used by their dietician within 1% deviation.
    • Inaccuracies: Some users reported inaccuracies in body fat percentage measurements compared to other scales or professional body scans.
    From TechRadar Review
    • Design and Build Quality: The review praises the scale's stylish design, robust build quality, and ability to handle up to 200kg weight.
    • Comprehensive Metrics: It highlights the scale's comprehensive metrics like body composition analysis, ECG for AFib detection, and vascular age assessment.
    • Price: The main drawback noted is the high price tag of $399.95/£349.95, which may not be justifiable for most users.
    From Reddit r/withings
    • Mixed Accuracy: Users had mixed experiences with the accuracy of body fat percentage measurements, with some finding it consistent with gym scans while others reported significant inaccuracies.
    • Inaccurate Readings: One user mentioned their scale showed the same body fat percentage for them and their spouse, which was inaccurate compared to professional scales.
    • Understanding Limitations: Some users advised understanding the limitations of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) used by the scale and factors that can influence readings.
    Another Reddit Thread
    • Lower Estimations: One user found the scale's body fat percentage estimations to be lower than reality based on DEXA scans but appreciated the Withings interface and app integration.
    • Advanced Functions Issues: A user had issues with the advanced functions not working properly and faced difficulties with Withings support and returns process.
    • Positive Reviews: Positive reviews mentioned the scale's consistency in tracking trends over time, even if absolute values may not be 100% accurate.
    • Feature Utility: Some users cautioned that certain features like nerve analysis and ECG may be gimmicky and of limited utility for most people.
    Summary

While the Withings Body Scan offers comprehensive metrics and tracking capabilities, reviews are mixed regarding the accuracy of specific measurements like body fat percentage. Users generally advise understanding the limitations of BIA technology and focusing on tracking trends over time rather than relying on absolute values. The high price point is also a common concern raised in reviews.

I don't need one of these, I simply look in the mirror and it screams "You fat bastard!" back at me..

  • +2

My $6 Coles scale has an app!

  • +3

    I’ve got one of these.

I’ve been doing a lot of strength training so putting in muscle, but also prone to not focussing on diet so putting on fat.

They are good for separating the two - eg am I putting in weight due to the strength training or is it because I’m eating crap.

You want to use daily to get trends as over the longer term the trends are certainly accurate enough.

  • +1

Can’t imagine this is any more accurate than the renpro scale which I got for $30

    • It is more accurate but you don't need to get this really expensive one. They have another one Body Smart (might be Smart+) which is $200 and it has overall good reviews and accuracy compared to cheap scales. Specially measuring the BMI kind of stuff.

I thought the title had missed a . in the price

  • +3

This price seems out of balance…

    • +3

Weighing up the options, I don't think it is worth it.

      • +2

I had to measured my wallet twice before realised i have not enough dough to buy this

  • I think this is expensive because it will give you electric shock if you are one gram more than yesterday

  • This is $553 on Good Guys Commercial if you have access to that

  • Buy a threadmill or an used homegym instead along with a cheap full sized mirror if you dont have one. Finally its the mirror that will tell you if you achieved your goal, not this.

  • I have the older generation which I got waaaay way cheaper than this. It is only the convenience factor where you don't need to manually journal weight, specially for the family (who eats the most, pays the most?)

TBH, once the price is sub $200, I will get a Garmin equivalent so everything stays in one app.

  • For less than this you can get medical grade scales right? Brand is Tanita (Omron)

  • I'm quite confident that you can get a full-year gym membership with access to a professional body scanner for a price lower than this.

  • $649 lmao 😂

  • Body composition scales are junk. If you want far more insight into you body composition you should get a DEXA scan at any radiology clinic for about $100. Do one at the start and then when ever you want to monitor progress along the way.
