19.5cm Diameter Granite Mortar and Pestle at Kmart for $12

790

I noticed on the weekend that Kmart is selling a bitching mortar and pestle for $12. Its 19.5cm across, so is plenty wide, and is made of polished granite.

I've never seen a large mortar and pestle this cheap before. Additionally, the granite surfaces of the mortar are finely polished, making it easier to use than some cheap mortars that are non-polished. I bought a crappy one from Target recently and it is non-polished and bits of cinnamon bark get caught in the pits of the mortar whenever I use it. Man, I could really grind the crap out of that cinnamon with this baby.

There were plenty instore at the Toowong shop I went to.

The only slight drawback is that at 10cm, it may not be as deep as you would like your mortar to be.

I've always wondered which is the Mortar and which the Pestle……….

    • +8

      pestle kinda looks like…..
      pestle kinda sounds like…..

pestle is the long, hard thing you take in your hand… and bash in the other thing….

i hope you wont have any problems remembering in future :)

      • +1

Now that's some innuendo right there! :p

    • The mortar is the bucket, the pestle is the bit you hold. The mortar is so named because it resembles a traditional military mortar (ie a short, stumpy cannon barrel used to propel cannon balls at a steep trajectory across short distances).

      • +2

I hate to be a fusspot but I'm fairly certain you've got it the wrong way round. The grinding mortar came first (ancient Roman at the very least) and the military mortar was named because it looked like the grinding mortar.

        • +1

Blow me down, you're right. Apparently mortar is from "mortarium" meaning "crushed drugs".

  • +1

This is not a deal. This is the normal price for this in Kmart. I bought one a couple of months ago for $12.

    I broke the Pestle :(

    • +4

Guilty! It is a crime for posting none bargain items at OZB!

      • +6

Stoning with granite pestles seems appropriate to the crime! ;)

    • +3

Technically, yes but this suckers tend to be expensive so getting a heads-up for a cheap one is a good thing.

    • +7

Apologies. I shall perform the appropriate penance by beating myself repeatedly in the face with my pestle.

      • +1

Now, is this the real pestle or the metaphorical pestle?

        • +1

ive heard the legends of people being able, but ive never quite beleived them myself.

      • Are we back to innuendo again? ;)

    • +3

Its is a deal if its a great product at a great price, normal price or not.

    • +11

      You must have been mortified.

    • True. I got one nearly two months ago for $12

  • Normal Price, they also quite small. Im sure they do the job but.

    • +1

I wouldn't say it's small (19.5cm in diameter). The mortar could be a little bit deeper.

  • +2

This is handy, since my partner was talking about getting a mortar and pestle just the other day.

Learned an useful Japanese word for free today.

    • +1

ffs, i just googled a japanese word which i shouldn't at work ! don't do it guys !

    • +1

You guys just made me google it too … curiosity got the better of me even though I was at work.
I have seen OP's username before and thought that is cute but never expected this

      • you should all learn to use google translate as well ;)

  • Own it - this is quite a good mortar and pestle set (especially given the price), but it's a polished one as OP notes. This makes it considerably easier to clean (and get every last bit of spice from).

The only drawback to this is that it'll requires a lot more effort than a rough-surface mortar and pestle to get a really fine powder on dry spice, and it can become really evilly difficult to work with wet spices (think Thai curry pastes) in.

  • "The only slight drawback is that at 10cm, it may not be as deep as you would like your mortar to be."

How deep should a good mortar be? Can it be "too deep"?

    • If I am engaged in an act of furious grinding the mortar with my pestle, sometimes the spices spill over the edges of the mortar. This can be prevented by having a good, deep mortar with steep walls.

I grind pretty much everything in a mortar - coffee, rock salt, spices. I go through quite a few of them because the pestle tends to split in two when you drop it from a sufficient height.

      • I quite like your style. Do you get this furious with other acts too??? ;)

  • -1

    is this worth it?

Kmart also has a couple of other items people may be interested in. There is a stainless steel serving jug that looks quite nice for about $8 or $12. It is $30 or $40 at House. I am certain it is the exact same. There is also a glass based electronic scale for around $12 or $15 that is at least$30 at house. These items are identical. The stainless steel jug is quite attractive.

They also have some nice glass bowls in various sizes from $1 to about $4 or $5. And various canisters. These items would all be quite suitable to package up handmade xmas goodies if you are that way inclined.

    • I am into jugs and a couple of these might satisfy. I could put one either side of my pestle and it would look really nice.

Heh - about the only decent thing we've ever bought at Aldi was a mortar & pestle just like this (colour and all), but of course smaller. (So far anyway.) We bought three to grind and store spices without cross-contamination.

They must've had some errors back on "the production line" (probably a 6-year-old in Afghanistan with a large angle grinder methinks, from the mistakes). Anyway, one was larger than the other two, and I noticed more spice gets wasted through spreading out and covering the walls. I use a small nylon brush to collect most of it. But people may want to keep that in mind before buying something this big.

The Aldi ones come up every few months and they were less than $10 last time. Whatever people buy, open the box and check it thoroughly first! Many of the Aldi ones had cracks in the pestle. You could tell they would easily break with a small drop or bump. The "hole" was bad on many too. If you ran the pestle around like you would use it, you couldn't even touch some of the walls.

ALSO… I could tell from markings, etc. the Aldi one was made in the very same place as one I saw in BigW, and a second in a specialty kitchen supplies store. So all of the above could apply to other brands/stores.

[Edit: And um… isn't just the OUTSIDE that is polished!?]

  • I bought 1 on special at kmart 2 years ago (same description & packing)for $10.
Even at $10 it was not a bargain as I don't need one :-/

Yes only the outside is polished, the inside is quite rough. When I used it I could smell powdred granite so I don't think it will stay rough for long.

I only used it once worked up quite a sweat. Think the technical term is lather.
On a serious note the bottom of the pestle is very, very rough so all my chilli (& grit) got stuck on the big end (but it didn't feel too hot).
    Yummo.

Also when I bought mine they had 8 and mine was the only one where the inside edge of the mortar was not chipped due to contact with teh side of the pestle when shipped.

  • +2

Funny you mention the chipped edges. After I posted yesterday, I remembered I looked at the KMart one months ago. When we purchased all of ours from Aldi, we had to open many boxes to get good, undamaged, able-to-grind-all-around-the-walls, etc. - pairs. I thought that was a pain - but when I saw the KMart ones they were worse. As you said, they had chips around the rim, scratches on the polished outside from I don't know what, very rough bottoms that would scratch kitchen bench, cracks in BOTH the mortars and pestles, deep holes about the size of half a pea where you would lose spices… And like you also said, there was less than 10 on the shelf.

I hate promoting Aldi in any way, but when they get them in, they have like… 60! Sure we had open probably 45 boxes to get decent pairs - but at least we could.

Oh - and for those people purchasing one for the first time… I'm not sure if this is what you're supposed to do, but like sirplus said, you get lots of granite powder when new. The first spice I ground turned grey with granite powder. So I had to grind a handful of rock salt three times before I could use it for anything edible.

    • Good tip on that rock salt!

    50 Shades of Ozbargain……

She lay on the kitchen bench, her mortar waiting to be filled with his seed, waiting for Paizuri. He was ready, his pestle as hard as granite. He approached her gently, as it was her first time. He gently entered her, and when he thought that it was right, he began to grind, gently at first, and then more firmly.

They were just beginning to think this was a match made in heaven when the inevitable happened - just as he was about to fill her with seed.

JV burst in! "What's the normal price?", he exclaimed.

    The dream was over. :(
