      • can you use 5600 for this laptop?

        • The Laptop maximum is 4800, the ram will automatically reduce its speed to 4800.

At least it should, can always use the bios to manually adjust timings.

Either way, this is the best bang for buck branded single 16gig RAM you will get for DDR5 Sodimms right now

Anything else at least $50 more

  • Been waiting for a best bang for buck laptop - anything better in the past few months?

    • No

Thank you - since you were kind enough to reply

        Does this have switchable graphics?

My reading says yes but I do wish to confirm.

        • +1

thats what I read, but haven't received this yet.

        • In the Studio software app (the gaming control centre for this laptop) You can set which programs will use the dGPU when running, otherwise, it will default to the integrated.

  • just received the laptop, build quality seems good, keyboard good,

    • How is the temp and fan noise? I'm seeing lots of complaints about it.

      • still waiting for the RAM,

      • +1

I got this delivered last week. Fan noise is crazy loud. This really should be marketed as a gaming laptop. The fans kick in loudly just doing basic tasks on Windows. There is software you can install to change the power mode and that helps, but i would expect we shouldnt be hearing the fans at all if we are just doing normal tasks. For the price, this may be the best bang for your buck gaming laptop out there.

I can play Helldivers 2 at medium to high settings at 60fps roughly. So its competing with the graphics output of a rtx 3050-3060

  • Having issues with battery at 0% and not detecting the a730m discrete graphics at all after driver installation.

Hoping for guidance from the community or from the store rep if I am lucky

  • What's battery life like for everyone?

I get 60 min from web browsing on power saving mode.

    • holy crap - can I RMA this based on the battery life?
One hour is considered unusable in the portable use cases. Only usable if this is always-plugged in.

      • I'll recharge it tonight and try again in the morning. I was expecting at least 2 hours.

        • And the charger cable is Soo not flexible, but for 850 with ram and SSD, can't really complain, especially the screen and keyboard are goos

    • I have to say I think these are all basically being sold with dead or near dead batteries.

Mine is toast. It initially held about 10 mins charge. Within a day that had turned to 0.

      Customer support conversation was "interesting".

I explained I had already bought an SSD and ram, needed to ensure I would get a replacement and not a refund. He basically said "no". And I was like, "wow, service".

      • They can't replace the battery?

        • Honestly, I do not think spare parts exist for these, I believe they would just swap laptop kits as long as there is stock.
I do not think a store would be able to open a new kit and just swap the batteries over either.

My unit that would not run on battery at all had a faulty motherboard, not battery. I opted for a refund. (MWAVE) - chucked my RAM in the cupboard and used the SSD in something else.

THOUGH these have all been sitting for 2+ years most likely, not sure when the batteries would have been produced, no clue what kind of storage conditions they have been in or what kind of charge they were stored at etc. I am not sure how much the batteries would like that.

A huge problem this laptop has is that the A730M does not appear to enter sleep or power save mode as you would expect, you can check this yourself with HWIFO or other software. Installing the latest GPU drivers (not from the laptop driver pack) helped a little, Windows update will install an old driver over the new ones, just install or "repair" new drivers over the top again. Disable graphic acceleration in your browser may help with battery life if that is what youre doing, i dont like doing that though. I don't recommend disabling driver updates in Windows update either but you do you.
The CPU also appears a bit weird with its power saving/downclocking.

If you do not have NUC Software Studio installed, i recommend installing that and making sure the on battery performance profile is set to the most efficient, probably wont make a difference though.

          • @HueSplat: Mine has really bad backlight bleed in all four corners. PC alliance is refusing to send me another until I send it back..it's a shame because it means a lot of downtime

      • @ozbjunkie which retailer only offered to refund you?

        • Computer alliance. It wasn't a refusal to replace. It was "we will maybe run out of replacement stock before we get around to verifying we sent you one with a lemon for a battery". Therefore you might miss out. We will not hold a unit for you.

          • @ozbjunkie: Thanks. If mine turns out to have a dud battery, I thought it might be worth asking for a partial refund and keeping the device. At least we'd be left with a capable SFF desktop.

    • same here, battery life is shit

      • Hey what sort of time are you getting?

I was able to get around 2hours on battery with simple web browsing including one YouTube playing throughout this time, tethered to a mobile phone for internet connection via USB tethering. (ie. not using wifi) This is with NUC Studio at Power Saver mode, and at about 80% brightness.

I've never had a dGPU laptop before so not sure if this is good or terrible.

The "Intel NUCs with Windows* and Intel® Ethernet Controller i225 Won't Wake from Modern Standby" specific page and download has been removed, you can probably find it on some Asus NUC support page for a NUC 11, its the same patch.

  • Update here re my battery issue. Returning and repurchasing as currently 20% off eBay makes this even cheaper.

There is apparently a "setting which may be altered to allow the batter to charge to 100%" meaning support staff said give them a call if battery is in health mode / to check if the battery protection is limiting charge.
