American Express Essential - Now Has an Annual Fee?

I noticed that the Amex page for the Essential credit card now says that the card has an annual fee…

$9 per month ($108 per year)

I'm certain it was free before. I found my sign up email from November last year and it states no annual fee.

Is anyone aware of when they changed, and if there was a notification or public update?

    They removed the Essential card and have now released the new Essential Rewards card (with the annual fee) the card earn rates etc. are completely different.

        @MikeyKadabra7: This guy on YouTube covered the changes briefly. I'm pretty sure Amex allows existing customers to keep their card albeit encourages them with sign up offers to take up a different Amex card.

Not that I remember.

So now, you pay fees to have the card and also pay the extra AMEX fees to use the card.
