Kaiju! Beer Champions Mixed Case $89.99 + Delivery @ Kaiju! Beer

560

So this brewery in Melbourne - Kaiju! Brewery - won Best Mid-Sized Brewery at the Australian International Beer Awards, they're celebrating by sharing out some fancy beers for cheap.

Their Kaiju Krush is normally around $80 a slab, but in this mixed case you get a heap of their different beers that are usually mucho mucho more expensivo. Get around it while you can.

There's a smaller Mixed-Four that they're selling too, four of their best for $21… it'd be a lot more than that at a bottl-o I promise.

      how? didn't work for me.

  • +3

These guys make awesome beers. Their Tropical Pale Ale is very tasty indeed.

    • +13

      For good craft beer, yes.

      • How much was a mixed case before the sale?

        • +9

No one actually answered your question, probably because it's only ever been this price.

Looks like it's probably about $120 or so to buy all this separately. Mixed packs usually have a bit of a mark up as a result whereas I'd say this isn't really the case here. Borderline bargain that becomes a real one if you're keen to try the stuff.

          • @werdplaya58: its why these craft breweries are closing, government tax plus their fancy price = no go for most people

            • @botchie: Not sure why you got negged. This is a fact. I love craft beer but not the price tag.
              .

      • At what point does it stop being craft beer? The description mentions this brewery won "best mid-sized brewery". I'd hazard a mid-sized brewery pumps out a fair quantity on an industrial scale. Is "craft beer" just a term to describe varieties not regularly consumed prior to about 2006?

        • +1

Not sure on the technicalities but hard to take the term seriously when you have supermarkets owned labels pumping out "craft beer" as well.

          • +7

@werdplaya58: The only people calling those hidden supermarket brands ‘craft beer’ are the supermarkets.
It’s difficult to get something independent in most bws/vin cellars/dans/ first choice without accidentally picking up one of their shadow brands.

<40 million litres/yr and <20% foreign ownership for the “Certified Independent” label most real/non-acquired crafts obtain through the Independent Brewers Association, including Kaiju.

That allows for quite a large scale considering a brewery like Philter would do <2m, but for context CUB would do 400m and of course the foreign ownership is the big one; huge foreign giants Asahi and Kirin dominate the AU market including all of the faux-crafts.

          https://craftypint.com/who-owns-your-beer

          • @SteveBuscemi: 40 million litres is full on industrial scale production, hence I think it's complete horseshit that supposedly constitutes "craft" beer. The fact it's an industry lobby group drawing up definitions speaks volumes. Not saying you shouldn't drink it (I do sometimes), or pay whatever you see fit, I just have an issue with what "craft" is, allegedly.

            • +4

@Ham Dragon: Read this. It's not a big brewery, is it?

              https://brewsnews.com.au/kaiju-and-exit-to-share-brewery/

There's a difference between craft and independent. Coopers = independent, not craft. Some BS made up big retailer brand = craft, not independent. Kaiju = independent and craft. Why not just back a local business if they make something you like? What would you suggest doing instead?

              • +1

                @eraser215:

                read this

An article from 2015…thanks. Here's another one from after that, where the capacity has quadrupled to 100k litres.

Anyway, that wasn't my point, which is that "craft" is an entirely redundant label 99% of the time. 1 million litres is over 444,000 6packs (11k cartons). Not exactly small time. Extrapolate that 40x to the 40mil litre limit of "craft" brewing…I don't think any business capable of pumping out 440,000 of anything, let alone cartons of beer (=10.5 million cans), can claim to be "craft" or "bespoke" or whatever.

        • +3

craft is anyone that hasn't been bought out yet

    • +9

There's a variation of this comment in every craft beer deal posted.

Think of something you enjoy. Food maybe, electronics, maybe some other form of alcohol. Do prices vary based on quality? Not sure why it's hard to apply this same logic to beer.

      • +1

I think the problem here is the kind of people often referred to as "morons".

      • 100%. Even wine and spirits people seem to understand that pay more = (generally) better product.

        • +2

Except my dad, who doesn't think you can beat cask, and if it isn't $2.50-$3/l, you're wasting your money because it tastes worse the more you pay.

    • +1

I'm with you. Ive just come back from Japan and beer and spirits here are so overpriced.

I could buy a Coopers sparkling stubbie for $2.50 and a Jonnie Walker 700ml for $19.

      • -8

unfortunately some people here cannot be trusted to not get sh!tfaced and abusive at every opportunity. there needs to be a level of monetary cost involved to reduce that (through duty or excise). not saying it doesn't happen in Japan at all but as a society they're just that bit more behaved.

        • +1

You can smoke your heart (and lungs) out as much as you want cheaply in Japan too. Coupled with drinking and horrible work life balance it's a wonder they manage to live forever…

          • +5

@werdplaya58: calories probably plays a huge part. obesity rates are much lower over there than here. high quality healthcare, purpose and joy/meaning to life (ikigai). all positive factors i reckon.

      • +8

Thanks the government for that. Excise duty on spirits is now $101.85/litre of alcohol.

So for Jonnie Walker that is:
        0.75 (750ml) * 0.4 (40% alcohol) * 101.85 = $30.55 of tax per bottle.

Red Label is Currently $40.45 at Dans, which means the following:
        GST: $3.67
        Excise: $30.55
Total Tax: $34.22 or 84.5% of the price!

Actual amount split between Dans and Johnnie Walker, $6.23!!

Excise should never have been indexed to inflation twice a year.

        • -2

yeah goverment is fkin things up and they dont care

        • And why isn't it indexed for wine? Blows my mind.

  • +6

That deal would be great if they pulled the lager out of it.

  • -3

Can probably have this on tap at GABS and avoid buying the case.

  • +1

For $80 odd I personally would prefer 4 of the 4 packs but it depends if you like Kaiju's lagers or not. Their cerveza is certainly a smashable, easy-drinking beer.

  • +1

    kaiju krush is the best

  • aaaaand its out of stock! Doh!

    • I just bought after your OOS message so maybe try again

  • Not sure why this is marked as oos, I've just placed an order.

  • Me too! It did say OOS about an hour ago.

  • +1

    back in stock!

  • Just ordered also - not OOS

  • i don't mind a pale ale, but I'll never pay $100 for a case of beer. I don't care how good it is.

    • +2

      OK!

    • +1

You only live once my man, sometimes a small financial cost is worth it just to try a new experience.

  • -1

man I wish it didn't have that West Coast IPA - anything but that, genuinely the most disgusting piss behind foster's

    • +1

The gold medal winning one? Ok then, whats a good west coast IPA?

    • +2

      You're clueless

  • Ooh, nice. Love their Pale Ale.
