Need a New Mid Range Phone $1000 Budget

Hey All,

I've had an Oppo Find X5 Lite for about 2 years, recently the screen/digitiser has glitched out and its not responsive to touch and a bit glitchy.

Usable, but annoying to use if that makes sense.

I found it a good phone overall, though I use my phone alot and also at work so I found the battery life in the last 6 months - 1 year a bit lacking

I am heading off on a bali trip next weekend, so I need to buy a new phone ASAP so I can keep myself occupied on the plane and take photos on the trip.

I've got up to a $1000 budget, but ideally would spend less.

I use my phone for work also, and currently use 2 sims, so something that supports that or an extra e/sim and has good work/personal phone separation is nice

How I use my phone

  • Scrolling Social media
  • Occasional photo taking
  • Phone calls, texts, web browsing
  • Playing games (generally just pokemon on an emulator)

Will consider android only at this time.

I was thinking a straightforward choice seems to be a pixel? But looks like I just missed out on a good deal with the pre sale so am hesitant, I'd like a bargain if possibe!

When I bought my oppo I got the enco buds for free and that was great as I didnt own wireless ear buds at the time

iPhones finally have emulators in the App Store, worth considering if you want to join the light side of The Force.

    • I use a Macbook at work, and really like how nicely it all comes together.

But dont have the budget for the rest of the apple eco system in my personal life so wont make the move.

Would be perfect if I could afford the whole eco system haha

      • It is nice being balls deep in the Apple ecosystem. But yeah, can get expensive. Especially because Apple makes you always want the best they have.

      • You don't need any more devices, an iPhone alone is worth it if you're a MacBook user - for Continuity with MacOS and iCloud integration.

Honestly find it hilarious people will spend up to $1k just to do what you listed. What exactly warrants spending that much?

You do you of course, live your best life, treat yourself, (insert cliche consumerist catchphrase here), etc, etc…

    • If you use your phone all day every day then it's nice to have a good one. Or good to have a nice one, I'm not sure.

    • I know, its pretty crazy haha.

I'm in line with what AustriaBargain said.

I use my phone heaps, so its nice having something that performs highly. Particularly heavy user for work purposes (I work in sales) so often sending emails, slack messages, making contract amendments etc while on the go.

$1000 is heaps of money, but for something I'm interacting with over 10 hours a day (how depressing) it makes sense!

$1k is plenty. You can find heaps of stuff available for such a budget. Seeing as you liked your previous phone a lot, the Samsung Galaxy A55 will fit the bill. Similar screen size and up to date software. Can get it under $600-650.

    • Thats a good recommendation thankyou!

FYI the Galaxy S series can be had under $1000 regularly. I recently bought the S23 for $465 (stacking a trade-in worth $250, plus a $100 loyalty voucher that only took me 5 minutes to obtain).

The A series are okay hardware wise but their OS support lifecycle is much shorter (e.g you won't get as many years of ongoing Android security patches, updates happen twice a year as opposed to 4 times a year, and One UI software updates only up to 3 years) and there are no AI features.

Flagship S series (from the S24 onwards) have 7 years of Android & Security updates.

You can currently get the A55 for $429 (but will also need to add a $30 prepaid SIM card) from Amaysim

        • The deal is written wrong. It's $399 + $30 sim. The a55 gets 4 os and 5 years security. Samsung provides monthly security patches to A5x models for approximately 3 years from release based on history. Just released in March.

Yeah I'd probably wait for a deal on a pixel if you can.

The Pixel 8 for only $749 at 38% off RRP$1199 (+$30 plan/renew) is your best option. Great camera, seven years of updates and it has eSIM. It's also a flagship model.
